Very interesting. Quick question (as a piano player): doesn’t this concept clearly assemble the Ellington principle? Like everything „off“ the main triad in the melody can be harmonized with a dim7 chord? Looks familiar to me. Since the dim7 never changes in all four scales. Only the root triad plus its 6th is different, depending on major, minor, dominant or half diminished.

2:14 of course theres also a root inversion G major possible from that group of 6 notes, 4:05 Worth noting that anything built on a 2nd and a 4th is an inversion of a Diatonic Quartal triad. "do both' is great advice. Yeah, Stella is a poor choice, too complex. Autumn leaves? Your modal choice also cool. thanks for an insightful review!

From studying his teaching, I know that Ted always stressed the importance of *making music*, even (or especially) while practicing. This is a great example of making a potentially sterile exercise come to life musically.

Mikka - following this morning's session, I've spent the afternoon listening to Oliver Nelson's - The Blues and the Abstract Truth (1961). On track 2 - Hoe Down, my ears pricked up during Oliver Nelson's solo at 3:03 (kzbin.info/www/bejne/q6GpXpmXjNWDfbc). He plays a theme that I recognised as the main melody of Bullet Train written by Ernie Watts and Lee Ritenour from Ritenour's album Friendship 2 (1979) - (kzbin.info/www/bejne/l3q0Z5Z_gsSFe6s). A good example of taking a bebop phrase and creating a melodic theme.

I’m wondering if there is one single book you’ve gone through completely? I tend to have a hard time staying grounded in just one and I tend to stick with one book for a few months then go to another. Although for the past 7 months I’ve been just in Ted Greene’s Single Note Soloing Vol 1. If there was just one book you had to recommend to go through in its entirety which one would that be?

You're a man after my own heart. I own thousands of guitar instruction books, and I don't include my classical guitar sheet music in that statement. I love guitar books. I have "Classical Country" by Jimmy Wyble, and it's the only copy I have ever seen. Charlie Byrd's "Melodic Guitar Method." You'll have a hard time tracking down that one. The reason your video touched me is because I just moved out of state from California and I'm reorganizing my office. Keep up the good work, and keep reviewing those books!

Re: books by Randy Vincent, " The Guitarist's Introduction to Jazz" is excellent. Starts with Shell voicings & building upon that. Rhythm playing & comping before focusing on single line work. Talks about learning blues & bop heads as a start to soloing. I like your stuff also on that! Covers fingerings, movable patterns. Efficient playing. Good stuff, wish I found this book early on. Also got so much from Gary Campbell " Expansions". All the Barry Harris stuff has change my approach. Really compliments whatcI already know, but I think his criticism of standard approach to jazz Education is valid. Thanks forcall your excellent work.

23:20 I agree completely.. Very refreshing to hear this. In the course of watching the YT music teaching thing grow over decades, I’ve been annoyed by spoon fed and gimmicky/marketing styles.. it has ruined the essential and joyful discovery process for many younger aspiring musicians who’ve never known a world without the internet. Quality over quantity all the way

At 7:50 F6 is functioning as a ii-7 after that dim7, which will help those not familiar with BH to anticipate hearing this approach with against Berklee style educated students…for those looking for more applications of this sound, these ‘movements’ are all over Jobim’s compositions. Brazilian music is a mother-load of artful movement.
