The first time I heard this song by Voices of Lee was at a music festival about 20 years ago. They were the closing performance at a 3 day international festival. The audience of about 20,000 didn't respond like this one did, though. As the end chord faded away, there was not a sound in the theater. After 3 or 4 heartbeats of complete silence, the entire audience rose to its feet in thunderous applause. It was one of the most moving performances I have ever been to before or since. Glory be to God!
Talk about being at the right place at the right time! Fantastic front row seat.

Flashlyrics Danny Boy Lyrics Oh Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling From glen to glen, and down the mountain side The summer's gone, and all the flowers are dying 'Tis you, 'tis you must go and I must bide. But come ye back when summer's in the meadow Or when the valley's hushed and white with snow 'Tis I'll be here in sunshine or in shadow Oh Danny boy, oh Danny boy, I love you so. And if you come, when all the flowers are dying And I am dead, as dead I well may be You'll come and find the place where I am lying And kneel and say an "Ave" there for me.

One of the other videos referred to this instrument as a "subcontrabass" trumpet, which I believe to be incorrect. I'm happy this video correctly calls it a contrabass trumpet, as it has the same range as the BBb contrabass tuba and most sousaphones. I play essentially the whole range of brass instruments, so I can appreciate the fact that it is difficult to play using a tuba mouthpiece directly after using a trumpet mouthpiece--that is, it takes a few seconds to get "oriented" to the larger mouthpiece. However, the large mouthpiece is necessary to play the low notes because it allows a larger portion of the lips to vibrate than is required for higher notes. If a small mouthpiece is used with a large instrument (often requiring an adaptor), one can play higher notes but it will be difficult to play the lower ones.

The first time I heard "Red, Red, Robin...." it bit me hard. I got to sing it with them at an afterglow. I was in 7th heaven.....what a song! What a quartet.

They were the first quartet to sing really clean. I heartily recommend singing while milking cows. As a quartet. They weren't as lean as quartets eventually became, but their tuning is still exquisite. Attacks and releases quite good. Vowel sounds less so. They were only good because they are...brothers. If you ever have a chance to sing with family, do it. There is nothing like it.

Schmitt Bros took barbershop to a whole new level. Buffalo bills did the same. I knew them both. Don't let the farm boy Schmitt bros thing get you. They were musical geniuses. They did actually claim they sang milking the cows. At 3 in the morning. And doing every other farm chore. But they could really woodshed, using hand signals to up the arrangement as they went along. May God rest their wonderful souls.

Just discovered this on KZbin. Thank you! I grew up with this music, in fact, this was one of my father's prized records. Over time, I separately heard both the Buffalo Bills and the Confederates live, onstage -- awesome. My dad sang baritone and was an active barbershopper. He always teased that the real meaning of SPEBSQSA was: " Some People Especially Baritones Should Quit Singing Altogether " LOL! Thanks for the memories of these quartets and songs.😊

I've been revisiting this video for more than a decade and I have never come across a more profound example of the 4-part vocal harmony. This rendition of the song has reduced me to tears many times - not because of the subject matter, but because it thrills my soul to know human beings are capable of achieving something so beautiful.

My Dad sang in the Merry notes in the 50’s - early 50’s. Seemed like every show the sang at The Rascals did as well. I remember this song bringing me to tears when I was , maybe, 10. It is an all time Barbershop classic. Thank you Rascals. Dusty Hoyt
