Nooooo... Nooooo.. Didn't you go to the Vasa Museum (i know tajt your not so much of a museum person) but oh my God you missed, probably one of the most amazing experiences from visiting a museum. I didn't really understood it myself, and had lived in Stockholm for 21 years, before I went to there for the first time. I was totally stunned and blown away. Its basically a ship from 1628, that they have pieced toghether again, after being in the bottom of the sea, almost in the middle of Stockholm city center, to the 1961. The ship really are almost intact, because of the Baltic water/seabed have so low oxygene levels that the woodwork looks like it was droppe down just a couple of weeks ago. All of the exibition and whats included to tahto museum Is just amazing, and an must do at least once in your life time, if ever getting the chance. So please, you must visit that museum next time and you must be prepared that it will take a while before you want to leave that place 😊🙏🙏🙏🙏

Have you heard about that place called Birka in Stockholm? Its a very funny thing that happened when they found a Viking warrior grave from the 10:th century, that was filled with weapons and exavated in 1889. The funny part of this story Is that they belived i to be a smaller man, that was buried there for some time. But then when the archaeology got more advanced, and they understood that this warriors pelvis actually looked more like it was of a woman tahn a "little man". But the thing was that they could not even comprehend the idea that a warrior could ever had been a woman, and that a woman of its time could have been buried with such honors and that a woman could have had such a high status in the society back then, first of all because were talking about fierce Viking men, right. So these archaeological expertis and professors and what not claimed that this was not a woman, but a....... Hold on to your hat now.... That warrior was now a TRANSVESTITE 😂😂😂😂.... It was debated for a very long time and not many could admit that it could actually be a woman, until it all was proven to be 100% right.... Using DNA and when that was proven was there nobody that could claim otherwise anymore, but who knows... Mayby she was a transgender man (woman that was a man because she felt that she was a man). It is totally possible today so we all know that you are really not what you always borns into, and she can also just been a he/her, them/these or non binary 🤔.... So mayby these conservative archaeological experts and professors was right all along, and we should not call her a woman/man at all ... But we call it : That or it 🥹

I was actually wondering how cool it must be to have less crazy and more balanced day/night contrasts in e.g. New England, or even southern Canada, compared to almost complete sunshine in the summer and full-on darkness in wintertime in Northern Europe. Living ¬400 km north of Helsinki, I tape my blackout curtains closer to the walls in the summertime to reduce light leakage :D

One of the reasons why I don't go away from Finland in May-July time are the light nights. I absolutely love them and never try to darken my room during the night. It feels lovely to know there is no darkness at all. You say that there is 4 hours of darkness - really no full darkness at all because the sun only sets slightly under the horizon. I learned to sleep in a sunny room already as a child, my bedroom was east facing and the light curtains in the room didn't even meet in the middle.

Glad you felt the same way! I was only in Helsinki 2 days during my first ever visit and met some great people, enjoyed the city in the fall and throughout the rest of my trip through Europe I couldn't get over it. Frankly it was my first ever solo trip so I guess first destination holds something dear to me... anyways, I wanted to go back so badly that I got back home, went back to the restaurant I worked at and grinded my butt off to go back there, 6 months later, this time for a whole month. I was incredibly broke on that trip! And now I'm back here again, so far for over a week, for the 6th time. Summer has been great this year! When I first came here I was 18 and that was almost 10 years ago now, so a part of my feels like I somehow came of age during my times spent here. In total, I've spent about 8 months in the city/country. Would absolutely love to move here, but too bad I'm totally underskilled and under-educated (travel was always priority), but perhaps it'll happen some day!

Anchorage, Alaska is just slightly more North than Helsinki, so you should get those light midnights during the summer there, as well. I have lived most of my life in Helsinki, and now I'm living in Turku, another Finnish city. My solution to how to sleep during the summer are good curtains. Many people think, that Helsink railway station is Art Deco, but it was built well before the Art Deco period, in 1912-1918, so it actually represents Art Nouveau.

I think people adapt to that brightness of summer as well as to the darkness in the winter. I sleep with my bed to the window and rarely have curtains or shades blocking the sunlight even in summer. In winter it is different kind of peaceful and beauty in those islands and nature where you walked. 😊 And that original long drink. Fun trivia, it was created for 1952 Summer Olympics of Helsinki to be the official beverage. 😅

Many people don’t realize how wonderful Finland is because Finns themselves are nearly immune from braggadocio. (BTW I'm not Finnish, so I can say that) Quality of life, with all its content and creature comforts, abound in the capital city and beyond. Finland is indelibly linked with craftsmanship, creativity and style. Possibly the incredible and abundant access to, and inclusion of nature is the reason Finns are not only the happiest people in the world, but also helps to explain why living here is so good. Winter, like anything, is what you make of it! Come back and visit us again. You haven't lived until you've trekked for hours amid a Finnish forest to then enter a clearing as the evening sky is ablaze in a mesmerizing Aurora Borealis display!

The stink was caused probably by some air pressure fluctuations in the ship's sewer pipes, which sometimes causes the water in waterlocks to drain and leak the smell out. When the ship was in the harbor and its sewage tanks were pumped empty, that might have caused it.

A ferry ride to Stockholm was often the highlight of my summer holiday as a kid :) Silja Line was the more fancy one and still is. Nowadays it's often cheaper to fly but kids still love the ferries. These days the sea route to Tallinn has more passengers, that's just a 2,5h ride but the ferries still are very comfortable "mini cruisers"

I was in my 20s when I learnt the difference between ferries and cruise ships. When I started selling Royal Carribean lol Swedes/Finns always say "lets take a cruise to Finland/Sweden". We aren't really aware of these huge ships you call cruise ships. For us this is it. I mean honestly, I regard these ships as kind of a hybrid. They serve both functions. Most people use them for a cruise style experience, but for others it's purely traveling from a to b. Gabriella is one of the smaller ships though, the bigger ones are even more "cruise style". Generally the older ships - more cars. Newer ships - more restaurants and stuff.

@@everyspeed-t9b Ferries are for travel (and shipping). Simpler. You have your cabin and not much else. Not very much to do really. Often has car decks for cars and trucks. Good old Gabby!. I have made the trip across many times either to work in Stockholm or just to watch some great bands playing. Popular bands are more likely to play outside of the summer season, when there are fewer holiday passengers. Silja Line ferries are worth checking out. They really look like cruise liners, but from Helsinki to Stockholm Silja tends to be more expensive. The lack of Wifi signal is obvious on open water, but most of that time one would be asleep. Also it is a good time to explore the ship and the programme that is on offer, and perhaps read a book instead. Regular travellers just prepare for the couple of hours of not having a signal (the rest of the time they will be partying, eating, shopping or sleeping anyway).

Wow I was completely uninformed about the wifi on ships - I've never been on a ship for more than a few hours so this is all news to me. That's awesome that good bands play the ferries on the off-season - I'll have to check out Silja next time. Thanks for watching
