If anyone planning to perform this plenum plate swap , you may want to also change rotor and cap, oil sending unit, all in back of the intake, as well as checking water pump and timing chain, which I did. My timing chain was clapped out, water pump looked brand new. Cut my own plate, ordered new intake bolts which youll probably need to do because the front and rear two bolts are through the heads and snap off. Timing chain Comp cams double roller, new plugs, wire, coil, and valve cover gaskets. Oil pan gasket. Maybe pull the heads and change springs and valve seals. But not necessary if you don't burn oil... Stock plenum cover is some kind of stainlees steel that warps no matter how you install it. Mine couldn't lay flat on a level surface. Every 2nd gen has them should have been a recall on this. Use loctite on old bolts or new ones if you dont torque them down correctly youll need to do this again Aluminum plate or not soon.

You did that all ass backwards you should of cleaned everything up top off before unscrewing anything. It's called break clean.. clean all that oil and dirt off or your just going to have a harder time cleaning it once you have a open top end... I can't stand when people don't clean shit before ripping heads manifolds ect off

is the 318 a tuff motor i heard the heads crack i herd so many different things about the 318 i was all ways told is is a strong motor is this true or false

It has been my experience in owning over a dozen Dodge trucks with the same 318 engine in them over a period of twenty some years that they are indeed a "tuff motor" as you put it.The more common of the LA series of Mopar small blocks,they were produced by Chrysler Corp. from 1967 to around 2003 and used in both their cars and trucks,and were even a popular choice for many Police departments for decades.They are pretty much bullet-proof as long as you keep oil in them.As far as the cylinder heads,I dont recall ever having cracked one.I hope this answered your question.

I’ve got an 03 4x4 with the 5.9 one day it ran ok an( always fired before I let go of the key) with a lil miss next day didn’t wanna start finally shot a tiny bit of ether in it then it fired up didn’t want to run blowing blue smoke out the back back firing thru the exhaust could it be from the plenum seal I thought it jumped time so I bought cloyes double gears an chain I’ve almost got that done. It’s got 386,000mi same block someone did the short block for sure it’s got .30 over flat top TRW pistons in it my buddy run a scope thru the spark plug holes then checked my compression an it’s good so ig I’ll pull the in take an fab a plenum pan out of 1/4 aluminum plate

What were the symptoms did you have to know to replace the plenum gasket? Any trouble codes? Any engine issues?

Hey, I just did this, it runs much better but still smokes, how long did you guys have to wait for all the oil to be burnt out, and quit smoking?
@kasmanien
@kasmanien 10 жыл бұрын
If it is white smoke then you're either burning oil or coolant,most likely it is oil contamination in the exhaust system from having all that extra oil seeping into your intake.If it is oil smoke it will also have that distinct burnt-oil smell and it will eventually clear up .If it doesn't,you may have one or more cylinders with worn rings thats letting oil blow by.Or your valve seals are bad and leaking(it will only blow smoke during first few minutes after starting if this is true).If you're not having problems with overheating or losing coolant then I wouldn't worry about it being coolant smoke.

kasmanien Mine smoked real bad for about 20 minutes then lightly for about another day after that,after I changed the plenum and gasket.Hope my answer was helpful,and thanks for watching.

I tried to point out things to watch for during the video,but I did encounter a few things to watch for.I would take the time to really clean and super soak the intake bolts as they are not very heavy duty bolts and they break off real easy,as you can see LOL Also , removing the radiator and accessories from front of engine would have made job alot easier,but the trade off is time,and I was in a hurry,so its kind of a toss-up.The main thing is keep everything CLEAN as possible and use a torque wrench for reinstalling bolts.Try to plan ahead before taking anything completely off ,I ended up with coolant all in my oil because i wasn't careful when pulling the coolant hoses/intake off so i had to drain 50.00 of synthetic oil , that really sucked.But its not hard overall,Good luck!

kasmanien what was all your symptoms to leading up to this repair exactly? i can clearly see oil in the plenum pan. my idle flucuates ar 500 and 600 and dips down to like 500rpms then revs it sefl up to try and even it out. replaced my tps and checked proper voltage, all is good. is that an intake thing?
@kasmanien

Richard Cowtails Mainly I was having random vacuum related problems,(cruise kicking off,heater controls not working, etc..)that I couldn't find any other explanation for other than an intake vacuum leak.Also,was using oil,and the main problem loss of power and bad pre-detonation (pinging) under full throttle.

yeah i almost just let it go,as the only real symptom it had was the pinging under hard accelaration,and using about a half quart oil every couple weeks.I am glad I did it though,she runs alot better more power and best of all no damn pinging! LOL Doing three additional projects on it this week should have vids up by weekend.Thanks for stopping by.
