That whole section is played backwards to save time at the very end. Instead of doing several (slow) turns, I can just change from backwards to forward right away and continue the stage. It saves only around a second, but it's worth it for the swag points.

figured it's the continuity problem, instead of turning around to face upward, it's more efficient to just continue while backward

It's not an emulator. That's an Analogue Mega SG, running the original game cartridges.

Hey do you think you could make a Bismuth-style breakdown of all the tricks used in this run? Or maybe collab with him, or Karl Jobst or somebody, so they can make some sonic speedrunning explanation videos? How much luck is involved with doing those clipping level skips? Which character has the most advantages? Why did you exit and reset after the carnival? Why switch to sonic and knuckles midway through?

Is the convention of pausing the timer during the score countdown used in sonic 1 and 2 as well?

Generally not, no. In Sonic 1 and 2, most runs simply add up the in-game times after each act. In Sonic 3 & Knuckles, there are lots of times where the timer is stopped but you can still speed up or slow down the run, so adding up level times is insufficient. I don't think there's an established convention for All Emeralds runs of Sonic 1 and 2, though.

That's intentional for a level wrap in lava reef 1, it skips part of the stage and he did it multiple times so he can get it
