For the most part this is a good critique. Liberals do suffer the affliction of being thin skinned. Any critique of Obama and they cry foul. Sorry but Obama just was another dirty politician with "pretty words."

Mickey represents the voters. Too ineffectual to do their responsibility, disillusioned and too de-evolved to think critically and vote properly. allowing scumbags like Jackie to take their money because they are worthless and don't want to earn their keep any more.

This has been one of my favorite films for decades now, and I never understood the critical response. But beyond critical analysis the mood the film sets is unparalleled. It wnvrlopes you in Loneliness and an unheard pleading with life. To me it is very much a visual tribute to Camus' and absurdity, the choice to accept this absurdity as lifes only constant and move on, or to continue to plead with the non existent

oh come on your theory breaks down. jackie is too cynical for obama, he explicitly denies obama's "we are one" theories in the final scene. Jackie is not obama. the payment for killing the people is not taxes. The theory also breaks down since nobody who pulled off the 2008 heist on the american economy got punished, they got bailed out. One guy went to jail, a Muslim guy in the UK who was mid-level and basically innocent as hell compared to the people who got away scot free. It was a complete farce. The people behind all this got cash bailouts directly from uncle sam. It is a better argument that the games are the stock market. and the people who got killed are the little people. The petty criminals who got killed in the movie were the ordinary citizens. The people who killed them, Jackie, that's the question, who is he. The old assassin, gandolfini, was the old legal order which was incapable of dealing with the issue. The new assassin, jackie, was the bailout system initiated during the course of the movie, jackie is the bailout started by bush and finished by obama, which protected the banks and bankers and murdered the little people. jackie is inherently cynical because he knows what is necessary to do and carries it out, without any illusions about the inherent goodness of his course of action, which is backed up by the mafiosos, who are the bankers themselves. And at the end he forces the bankers to pay him, and it is clear in the movie that he will get paid because he is threatening them. jackie is pure cynicism. obama is, at least as represented by his speeches which is all we get during the movie, pure idealism. it doesn't work that they are the same. It is also just brutally wrong to say that the movie's allegory breaks down under the director's narcissism or whatever. Just because it is not easy to understand doesn't mean anything about anybody's narcissism except perhaps the person who writes that. Jackie is the selected bankers tasked with cleaning up the mess, who theoretically did clean up the 2008 mess. They made heads roll, they "corrected" the financial issues, and at the end of it all they said, "now fucking pay me my money."

This is one of the most underrated films in history. I know that is said way too often but this movie should be on a ‘Top 100 Movies of All Time’ list. Besides the Financial Crisis allegory, it shows just how crime works. There isn’t a single person in the film with any redeeming qualities. They’re all just low-life losers. The man who wrote this, George V Higgins, served as Assistant Attorney General for Massachusetts and Assistant United States Attorney. He saw real crime. Crime isn’t glamours but dirty. And real crime is filled with people that you don’t want anything to do with. This movie was based on his book “Coogan’s Trade”. He wrote another book, “The Friends of Eddie Coyle” which was made into a movie by the same name. I highly recommend that movie as well.

the contrast with the counselor and brad pitt is amazing to watch. the counselor represents the boomers, the old guard, the delusional ones who have lost touch with how things on the street really work, mostly due to how wealthy theyve become. Pitt represents the new generation of people trying to make it. he sees the decrepit and dying system that he's trying to salvage, and the people surrounding that system are beyond delusional, so Pitt simply resolves to get what he can and move on. i see pitt's character as an homage to us millennials, who inherited a system that doesnt function anywhere close to how we were told it does by our elders. what we see on the ground is the drunken dude whoring around in his hotel. we see the poverty and desperation around every corner. we see the system for what it really is - cutthroat. in order to make it you've got to embrace how utterly alone you are and make the moves yourself, or else you'll end up just getting used like the two stooges who rob the poker game in the beginning. at the end Pitt's character realizes the opportunity that comes with the old guard's delusion. Pitt is now the shark and the shot caller - they need him and he can now start dictating the terms. the whole movie for me was the old guard presiding over a dying system and the younger people realizing what the whole thing really is - a business. the old guard want things to return to normal, but the younger, more savy people know the game's changed forever.

I appreciate just how hopeful the film is. It's bleak but it's not miserable. The ending really feels like a massive relief, even if Theo dies. I think it's something films like this often miss. You can't just make it all miserable.

Martin Freeman impressed me a lot with this performance, I've always seen him as pure Britt but he successfully convinced me he was all American in this show, I didn't see a British person at all. Plus I always have to respect an actor more who can act well even while performing in a totally different accent. Andrew Lincoln also comes to mind for this

You failed to highlight the fact that Vladimir Nabokov as one of the worlds greatest authors in English was a native Russian and English is NOT HIS NATIVE LANGUAGE. Same goes for Joseph Conrad also one of the greatest authors in all of literature- he was a native Polish speaker and English was also not his native language .

I actually realized this same thing last year watching reaction videos to the first two films from people who had never seen them before. It made me notice that we never get a POV shot from the terminator until AFTER the reveal in the club, and the viewers had no clue who was the good guy and who was the bad guy, either. Then in the second film they of course assumed that the T-1000 was the “good guy” for the first 25 minutes. Kind of mind-blowing.

Bro the cowboy scene is ruined by your edit. Have some patience dude the pauses are so natural in that. A lot of the pauses are so specifically timed and fit the scene. The cowboy gives him a minute to "think" before shutting him down. The pause gives the response weight. And its not like every single scene in lynch is like that, theres plenty of moments that aren't like that! Oh wow i hit the Mullholound Drive part jesus man. The story is the character! Its literally her dream of getting casted in a big Hollywood movie and the reality of her real failing life. It's literally just that with a bunch of awesome imagery. Her dream world, which is exactly what is happening for like 2/3 of the film, thats not really open to interpretation, is her wish fulfilment fantasy. Its so ridiculously simple. The fact that not everything perfectly aderes to that one specific reading makes the rest of it more fun in my eyes. It allows the film to mean more if you want it to, snd it allows cynical assholes to be like "see??? Vut it doesn't actually make sense tho!!" Its just an enjoyable amd compelling experience for a lot of people, laced with powerful human themes

Have gou even seen The Straight Story? What a god damn moving peice of Cinema. I love Lynch cause hes so in touch with his humanity. I also love him cause he's just allowing the work to come out of him. He has a very specific style, even his most basic shorts have the themes hes fascinated by. People with disabilities both mental and physical, the dark side of the inner life, the performances everyone gives as people in life, fantasy giving way to reality, reality giving way to fantasy, absurdism, surrealism. Lynch movies have various imagery that pop into my mind at random, lines that Ill always remember, scenes that make me laugh and very uncomfortable at the same time. The moment in Inland Empire where the protagonist is in ehat you presume is their backyard, husband grilling hotdogs, and a dozen random guys just start pouring out of their house to the protagonists surprise. Something like that is just such a dream like moment, its a very simple enjoyment for me. There are clear themes woven throughout, i am bombarded eith interpretations in my mind, i dont really care if it "makes sense" at the end of the day cause watching Lynch feels like a trance and there aren't many others eho achieve an effect like that for me. I know its not for everyone but he hits a chord for me every time

Two movies that left a pit in my stomach, children of men and the road. They have a lot in common too, worlds trapped in a nihilistic swirl, circling the drain of destruction. But the main characters find purpose in keeping the next generation alive although they know that their futures are bleak. Hope keeps them going until they can pass the torch of humanity along, even if it is just a half step.
