Love the X2 Hornet! I’m more medium oval/narrow and ride mostly road. The Tron look is cool too. I keep the visor on and buffeting not annoying enough to necessitate removing it. Solid choice. Agree on your points. FWIW. I’m bald with larger ears. I wear a thin skull cap. The helmet glides on and off without irritating ears. No fussing or adjusting to straighten out under the helmet either, if folded down on you. The ears stay in place.

Last week went helmet shopping since my Shoei hornet ds was definitely getting aged, wore shoei for years In Motocross, for some reason the new hornet x2 fit me terribly, just putting it on was a pain, not sure what changed in the shape? Ended up with the arai xd5, also for both brands if I follow the sizing chart ,I suppose to fit the lg, way too tight, xl fits good, i think the chart runs in the tighter side of things.

First saw video, and realized, I know those roads. Beautiful area up there in Duluth. I am with Terence with thoughts about the XR650L Honda. Much more dirt worthy, yet with lowering kit, appropriate tires, etc, it can do well on highway. I also have a Africa Twin, which I tend to use more when wanting to "eat up miles". if you are open to outside the box thinking, and traveling two up. I picked up an old (1979) BMW 650 opposed twin cylinder. And tossed scrambler tires on it. My wife and I traveled all around Black Hills SD this last fall. Highway, gravel roads, and NUMEROUS SXS trails. Trails one would normally bypass as a 2 up couple. That low center of gravity BMW and its lower end torque did just fine. I was cautious though, about not casing it on rock. My wife felt much more comfortable on it, than she did riding on the XR as her feet could touch ground when coming to stops. I did however install a 860CC Siebenrock cylinder kit on it when home. Which helps with the highway travel now.

If you ride more on the road the KLR will be better it beats you up less when cruising at speed. The Dr would be much better off-road because it’s lighter and has a lower center of gravity. Just depends on what you want. Both are excellent bikes

i bought a low mileage used '15 model last year, did ohlins full suspension upgrade, renthal carmichael bars, d606 tires. yoshi pipe, upgraded clutch without judder spring and 550 performance ecu tune. its a capable bike now but i still can't manage to wheelie the damn thing. giant loop fuel bag is nice to strap an extra gallon of fuel on the back for longer desert rides... you otta check out the 550 performance ecu tune. the 91 octane tune really lights the bike up with the extra spark avance to where it feels more like my 300 street bike.

The helmet is shit! First ride and upper visor is microscratched including pinlock, because it rubs on the upper seal when you open and close the visor. Those scratches are a safety liability as are impairing your main field of view. During the day all you see is foggy because of them, and during night time you must keep the visor open otherwise you cannot see. More then that, the pinlock pins are catching the upper visor seal EVERYTIME you open and close the visor. It is just a matter of time until the seal will be ripped off. Did not expect such things from a top line helmet. There are more things that are bellow average at this price but these mentioned are the most dangerous and frustrating. Again, we are payng the brand and not the qualitY of the product.

Not sure why one would even consider comparing a 250-anything with a 650. In my 50 years of riding I am pretty sure I never heard of anyone considering any 250 with any 650 within the same category of bike. I can only honestly compare it with what I’ve had experience riding. I do feel that many people are torn between the two sizes of bikes, myself included, if you’re sticking to backroads and 65mph and below the 300 and 400cc bikes are real weapons, more freeway riding is clearly a strength of the 650. Stripped basically all of my gen 2 fairing bolts my first time taking the bike apart. Make sure your tank is well aligned when putting the bike back together!! The aluminum bar that holds the wires in place against the frame can easily bend underneath the tank causing it to be misaligned and offsetting all of the bolt locations. If you're having trouble getting the fairing holes to line up double check the tank is aligned correctly. Replacement bolt kits are a good investment on any KLR

Great video, thanks for putting it together. I've daydreamed about owning a KLR for years now, my only concerns are the seat height (solved if I get a KLR S) and concerns about the doohickey. So many people on line caution about it, but I wonder if it can be all that bad if Kawasaki hasn't changed it much in three redesigns. Any thoughts on that?
@mindful_moto
@mindful_moto 3 ай бұрын
As far as the doo goes, Kawasaki should have fixed it, I don’t think it’s very difficult to swap it out with the Eagle Mike part though. And as far as the height goes it depends, I’m used to Motocross bikes and they’re just as tall, I’m 6ft so it’s no big deal. They have squishy suspension so this helps with the seat height once you’re on it

I'm finding the standing position a little difficult (I'm 6'2"), so I wasn't sure if it was my inexperience on this bike or the bar position. They are a gravel track/campsite bike that is budget but the skies the limit on good mods that transform the bike for the budget owner , Doohickey and Thermobob the most important for all years, bollts are soft be careful with footpegs, thread kit needed at some stage and new drill through or tempered bolts for subframe below tank fixes weak stock ones, crashbars a must for front protection, a fork brace stops speed wobble on some tires.

Bahahaha. You said it best. If anyone pays full price for a KLR, you’ve paid way too much. There is literally about $1000 worth of parts that Kawasaki could upgrade and make this bike really worth owning for the long term. And if all KLRS didn’t have front end wobble at higher speeds, the stabilizers wouldn’t be one of the number one upgrade people make on the bike. I can get on my Yamaha FJ 1100 at 120 miles an hour and have no wobble and yet get on my KLR and at 65 miles an hour fill that front end not be anywhere even near close to what my FJ runs. It’s just science and the forks on the KLR are decades behind 99% of any bike.
@mindful_moto

Interesting, I can only speak for my bike, but I never experienced a lack of stability or front end wobble, the tires were balanced properly and the suspension is stiffer post 2014.5 KLR’s so not sure if that’s it or not as I’ve never ridden a 2008-2013 KLR so I can’t say
@thelawrence71
@thelawrence71 4 ай бұрын
That’s really great that you’ve never experienced it. It’s not great nor does it feel dangerous but it does not feel normal. My tires are also balanced correctly so that’s not it. My VIN fell into the “forks being over tightened at the factory” category and had to be torqued to the correct setting. Kawasaki knew about the problem but did not send out a recall to any buyers nor dealers. This bike is the last Kawasaki I’ll ever purchase. There’s so many new ADV bikes that are hitting the market with better tech and abilities that will make the KLR an extinct dinosaur. And of course, these are just make opinions from my experience.
