Either my kid does not have ADHD or there is, indeed, something different going on with females. My daughter did not exhibit any signs until adolescence... she is not sluggish incidentally or "dreamy"... but she does seem to have big problems with executive functions, even now in her 20's. She went from being a good student to a not good student by her high school years. I could go on. Her life is often on the edge of chaos, she struggles with friendship, her room is a mess always, she always forgets to pay for her mobile service.. she took 3 years to finish a 1 year college program (despite being quite bright!). At home, she often lets loose with her anger. However, when I read about restless, disruptive kids... not my daughter. Not even the idea about talking too much instead of being physically hyperactive, etc. I think Dr. Barkley is somehow resistant to looking at the gender difference, in a more nuanced way. I know he's dealing with hard science and has had a long career studying ADHD and no doubt other conditions but... something is missing. (And for men or women... what about diet. My daughter eats candy and refined carbs every day... so far, she is a tiny thing, physcially. But I wonder about that apparent craving... and the other possible effects on her health. I especially think about how she'd do if she ate what is commonly known as "real food" - i.e. unprocessed foods that have existed for centuries. Diet and psychiatry... another subtle thing to consider that is likely very significant.)

Finding and listening to this podcast is crazy. I was diagnosed with adhd when I was 12 and I’ll be 40 this year. I also have endometriosis and a lot of issues with my cycle. I had absolutely no idea how many of my struggles are directly tied to adhd. I was medicated as a kid and that was about all that was done. There wasn’t any education around how to manage my emotional outbursts or any of the other symptoms I was experiencing. I’ve struggled my whole life to bury my feelings and just “act normal” like everyone else. I was called psycho as a teen and it’s all just haunted me my whole life. I referred to my Ritalin meds as “stupid pills” and told my mom I didn’t want to take them. Thank you Dr Kahn for sharing your story and thank you ADHD rewired for making this episode

Absolutely… hopefully we can all advocate for ourselves to reduce the unnecessary and unjustified stigma. And to educate others about what is less recognized about neurodiversity.

Truly ADHD interview. Majoring on all the minor details of an app and then spending 15 seconds on the majors. ADHD people cannot differentiate the important stimuli from all the 100s of others they have. When you interview one you have to facilitate conversation that redirect back to the important stimuli.

Taking away the method may take away the opportunity but it doesn't take away the underlying issues. This world is pretty cruel and intolerant of differences and that's what needs to change. There's so much focus on the act and not how society needs to change and meet individuals halfway. I know I'm neurodivergent but I didn't know and felt so crazy my whole life that at times I wanted to die.

Hi there! I have a question. I'm that ADD adult poster model. Everything you talk about is me and I totally relate, but one thing I haven't heard you talk about yet are our physical environments. I feel like I'm paralyzed every day by things around me not being perfect. Everyday for the last 20 years it seems like I wake up and get fixated on having a perfect house and everything organized, etc. I say, today is the day I'm going to get everything done, but of course it never happens. If I try to work with my house being not perfect, I can't focus on anything else. People always tell me that it's more important to focus on work and making money but I can't stand the OCD type thoughts. Do you think that it's more important for me to take the time and just focus, for say a week, getting my house, garage and closests organized then being able to relax and focus on work? Or do you think these thoughts are more related to just looking for something I can control? I feel like even if my house is clean and organized then I might find something else to fixate on. I do know if I focus on getting my kitchen cleaned, mopped and organized I am able to focus more intently on work. I also see I can even get hyperfocused and work for like 12 hours. I guess I need to understand more how important physical distractions are in affecting our work day.

0:11 talk while type. On mac it’s function function (might need to set it up with accessibility options) 0:18 use the cloud 0:20 auto silent app uses calendars to automatically silent notifications while in a meeting/focus block 0:34 gmail filter 0:37 dedicated junk e-mail address 0:40 set up browser to open tabs I want to ensure I focus on. 0:47 watches have timers and alarms 0:51 always wear a watch 0:53 use scheduling tools like ScheduleOnce (clients), Doodle (group meetings) and Boomerang (for everything else) 1:04 take 25-30 min to plan my week at the beginning of the week and 5-10 min every day to update and reviewing/rescheduling (refer to it often) 1:15 timers in arms reach and clocks in line of sight 1:21 trail of breadcrumbs. To help me get out of hyperfocus when I don’t want to stop. And also start back up when I come back to it another day. By writing down what I just did and what my next steps plan to be. Takes only a minute TOPS. 1:35 multiple clocks and timers on diff walls. Don’t need to turn head. Just be able to check time and visualize it. 1:57 only check email once or twice a day. Email is OTHER people’s priorities. 2:04 reminders for reminders. 2:08 nothing ever takes only 5 mins. 2:17 when paper/clutter is out of control, I reach out to someone else with the same problem and ask if they’re free to tackle it TOGETHER on video/FaceTime at the same time as you (body doubling). Adult study Hall, anybody? 2:33 running list of key insights and “aha!” Moments. 2:37 calendar reminders to look back on that notes/list of key insights during a quarterly planning/review period. 2:46 iPhone reminders app- titled to do lists. Like Netflix, audiobooks, movies recommended to me and help me enjoy instead of endless browsing. 3:18 productivity tip from podcasts and books outside of the world of adhd. 3:26 podcasts to help me fall asleep (otherwise todo list in my head is super loud and brain keep thinking too fast) fave pod is sleep with me. 3:48 weight 3:55 find simple ways to simplify things 4:00 same things for breakfast everyday to make it easy to eat/prepare 4:03 only wear one color theme. (Simplify styling/clothing) 4:06 only work 3 minutes from home.

0:41 have backups of things you frequently use 0:51 subscription services for things like shaving supplies you use frequently. So you don’t need to think about purchasing them. Like dollar shave club! 1:07 put multiple bags in garbage when replacing the bag (point of performance strategy) 1:20 mind mapping for goal setting or brainstorming 1:24 technology. Have it. Use it! 1:26 email notifications off 1:31 4 screens on my desk 1:35 screen dedicated just for calendar 1:39 check calendar 30 times a day 1:42 wake gps app integrated with calendar. Helps remind me to leave for events on time based on traffic! 2:06 no perfect app. So I’ve stopped trying to optimize. 2:13 time saving commands for Siri like setting reminders!

Thank you for sharing your struggles with your son. I struggle with the same thing as a mom of 3 boys. Ive always been too ashamed and embarrassed and always blaming myself for these "shortfalls" as i view it and i really appreciate the open conversation about the reality of it all and the questions to present regarding all of it. Love it. Thanks so much.

This is great. I’ve struggled with clutter and organization my whole life.. just got dx’d adhd at age 44.. so much makes sense! I’m eager to listen to this again & put some of these tips into practice. I did just get the Tody app to help with household chores as my daughter also just got diagnosed at age 15.5. It’s more visual, customizable, has reminders, data sync between our devices and has option to set certain chores to rotate between us etc. also includes a bit of a reward system. I’m excited to try it out and maybe start to slowly get caught up on cleaning while I utilize Robyn’s tips to get on top of the clutter. We have both struggled a lot with many executive functions esp household related stuff but having an understanding of why now gives us a sense of relief and much easier to give ourselves & each other grace.. I am so tired of living like this but it’s so exhausting to even think about all that needs to be done and how the hell do I even make it happen?! I quit allowing most people in my home years ago. It’s not a terrible mess but still way worse than most people I know. It’s embarrassing and I feel the judgement & criticism but I just haven’t been able to do it like they do.. now I know why! (Getting the dx and realizing how it has affected my whole life gives me a sigh of relief to be honest..)
