It feels like 1984 now , in 2024 . Everything seems to be topsy turvy . The dross rises to the top , truth is subjective , this never happened , that never happened , victimhood is only for certain groups , you must not say or write that , as someone is sure to be offended , etc etc.

Such dross at the top, that is true. Incredible, the mediocrity of the élites, with their dismal view of human potentialities. And yes, on the universal lying, Orwell was prophetic indeed.

A good summary of the major issues of Orwell's satire on 'How things are done in politics and a (Oligarch) controlled media' - But all the more impressive as Burgess clearly and specifically outlines exactly what was to happen to England (possibly the UK) by 2020, after 14 years of Far-RightTory rule. We're there.

And to think that the best of Donegal always wound up in Glasgow or Manchester. The Glenties, Falcarragh, Buncrana, Ballyliffin: which part of Manchester is not Donegal? And here comes wee John Wilson, A.K.A. Anthony Burgess, with his wisecracks. You can always tell a Donegalman or a Manx, but you cant tell him much.

I've read both over 45 years. Greene is a better writer than Burgess, IMHO. I read Greene over and over. Burgess once each time. Clockwork Orange is interesting and original, but its more a commentary than a portrait of society and people from an interesting perspective as areGreene's works. Burgess had great interesting moments, I guess, and original ideas but hadnt the insight in humans of Greene. Greene had a terrific anarchistic view. I think one learns much more about the world from Greene than Burgess. I would bet Waugh had more admiration for Greene than for Burgess, if he lived long enough to read Burgess. Being a good sniper and critical reader doesnt make one a good writer.

Huge Thanks! have been a student of the Magnificent Anthony Burgess since viewing the equally brilliant Stanley Kubrick's adaptation of "A Clockwork Orange." For me, there has never been a Finer writer! His Combination of intellect and Humor is unequalled (Kurt Vonnegut, as well) Would Loved to have read his screenplay for "Clockwork" that was rejected by the tempermental Kubrick (Kuprick?) whom alledgedly wrote himself. it's possible, like the saying goes (anything's) I'm pretty sure it was mostly there from original, would love to read it, is it available? Anyway, Orwell's prophetic tome was tremendous and accurate (2024) top 10 or atleast 20! had once thought of going to england and seeing Burgess's Birthplace and where he would Drink, But the country has followed america's war/invasion addiction in lockstep,so that's been dismissed. Perhaps Basel, Switzerland where Mankind's Salvation was Created by the Genius chemist Albert Hoffman! thanks again, PEACE

Burgess was jealous of Greene. Greene was a better writer and sold more books than Burgess. Greene wrote good screenplays which became classics, the 3rd man and the Fallen Idol to name but two. Burgess gave away the rights to A Clockwork Orange to Kubrick for 500 quid and it has made millions down the years on video, dvd and Internet streaming.

I am definately unworthy ro even comment on this level of erudition yet the fact does not depress me at all rather fills me with hope and a sense that our culture is or perhaps was worth something and there was aomething to look up to and a parnassus to climb. I crawl aroind in the foothills on my hands and knees to this day. I was apparently one year old when this appeared on TV for the delectation of the masses.
