While watching your videos I aspire to select the photos you will include as your favorites. Picking 4 of the 6 this time, I have succeeded in surpassing my past high score. Two other things come to mind. 1) Strolling aroung Berlin, it is easy to see what survived the WWII bombings and what had to be replaced with efficient, yet boring, architecture. 2) I was reminded of the three simple purchasing rules that I live by: never spend your hard earned money on Russian photo equipment, Korean automobiles, or home exercise equipment.

I never thought I'd invented a new youtube game with the Top 6. Unfortunately I didn't do that for the next video. Oh well. My neighbor is on his 3rd engine replaced under warranty and a friend can't walk in the back of his dealership's parts room due to the overflow of warranty engines waiting to be returned to their (Korean) manufacturers. Hi, I love your review, I was able to find this lens for 135$, 2ndhand ofc! But I was wondering about the auto focusing issues. I'm fine with the purple fringing and the bulky nature of it, I'm just mainly concerned about the auto focus problems since I have heard that these lenses from Sigma can be out of focus and stuff, 135$ though sounds like a deal its still a lot of money for a student like me. Should I be worried about this issue? How can I tell that it has a focusing issue (I'm relatively newbie to photography) and should I just spend a little more for an official Nikon lens because I'm worried that the Sigma lens will break down overtime and acquire that issue. Anyways again great review, and stunning shots of Ching Ching.
@patternsinsand7 күн бұрын
Thanks for watching. Tricky question to answer. If you check out other reviews there'll be some who say that Sigma lenses are inherently a lot worse (such as 'the Angry Photographer'. To get mine to autofocus, I had to send the lens in when the Z 6 came out to have its firmware updated. The issue now is that while it does autofocus, it's still a lens that was never meant for the Z system. From my perspective, it's not a problem at all for still photography. While not the fastest, if you find the right focus point, it works fine. I wouldn't use it for video though. Continuous focus is very rattley (noisy) and uncertain, which I think is partly the lense's fault and partly the camera's. I think it's still a great lens and I prefer the way it renders to both the Z f/1.8S and the Nikon F mount versions.
@LeePhong-d8j7 күн бұрын
@@patternsinsand thanks for the insight, I do plan to lightly do video, and I mainly do photographs of moving subjects so I think I wont be getting this lens. Its a shame though I really liked this design, I like tanky lenses. @@LeePhong-d8j I don't have the 35. Assuming you're talking about a mirrorless camera rather than a DSLR, have you considered the 40mm Z f/2? It's cheaper than the Nikon 50mm lenses, is inexpensive (albeit plastic lens mount and no weather sealing) and I love the images it produces. As it's a modern Z lens it's designed for video too. Fast enough and whisper quiet. I just purchased it and love it - see my review: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ioe5hGyerM-rqsU - good luck in your hunt.

The f/1.8 S? Or just the 50mm focal length in general? The S series does have that modern rendering and corner to corner sharpness. I've heard the f/1.4 has a bit more character but if you check out my review of the Sigma 50mm F1.4 EX DG HSM, you'll see that while it's bit old and clunky produces some nice images - albeit via the F mount adapter. Thanks for watching.

Excellent review with a great sense of humor. I thought your shots had a great deal of sharpness to them and was very impressed with this lens. So far I only have the 40 F2 for my Z5 but I’m looking at maybe purchasing this lens down the road. I compared it to my old 28F2 Nikkor and it was sharper than my old F2 lens but you can’t shoot this lens at F2 so there’s still advantages to the older lens. However, it doesn’t have to be used with an adaptor so having a native lens with the camera would be nice as well. It works as a 42 mm lens on my ZFC as well. So I can definitely see the advantages down the road so thank you very much for this excellent review. PS when I’m testing lenses I always shoot my bookshelf, it’s a good way of seeing clearly which lens is better. Regards Gerry
@patternsinsand8 күн бұрын
Thanks for watching, Gerry. I definitely think the 28mm is sharp enough. It does get accused of having quite flat rendering (no 3d pop) compared to the 40mm f/2, which I recently purchased and is a great lens. With it's compact size, yes, I think it'll be great on a DX body, bringing it to a great standard focal range. As for the bookshelf, it's great to finally find a use for those old 1970 encyclopediae 😃

In my opinion it’s the best street photography lens in the Nikon Z lineup. The rendering of some of the S Line optics such as the 50mm f1.8 are technically flawless with edge to edge sharpness, but I find the end results a bit too sterile and many of these premium Z optics are a bit too crispy for my taste in street photography. There’s something very pleasing and natural about the results from the 40mm. The size and weight are ideal and its autofocus performance is totally fine. I wish it came in a metal housing rather than plastic, similar to Fuji’s f2 primes and the lack of proper weather sealing is disappointment, but other than that, I think this is my all time favourite budget street photography lens and love how the SE version pairs with the Nikon Zf. Interestingly, I’m more disappointed with the rendering from its 28mm brother. While it’s adequate, I find it lacks something that the 40mm has, but can’t articulate it.
@patternsinsand12 күн бұрын
Agree totally. To me the 28mm is still worthwhile because of its flexibility but it does lack the characterful rendering of the 40mm. Check out my video where I describe it as Nikon's most boring lens.

Either way, you should also add the details of any digitisation/image manipulation as accompanying text (included with the other technical specs). Peace
@patternsinsand17 күн бұрын
Fair comment. I've given the film camera and lens but there are also some digital images there (should be obvious by the camera). The problem comes down to what constitutes 'edits' - most images have some kind of colour grade and the whole process of developing, scanning and outputting a film frame is manipulation. Might have to do a dedicated video on the process.

Great video and review. Exactly what I've been hoping to see regarding this lens, rather than a dry 'specification' oriented review. I've been moving away from zooms towards primes, and have built up a collection of D series Nikon primes over time - I prefer them to the later 'G' equivalents for their size, build quality, the relative simplicity of their optical formulas and fewer glass elements, and of course their characterful rendition - which I'll happily prioritise over the clinical sharpness of today's glass. I've been lusting after this 180mm f/2.8 for a while. Your images with it are wonderful - inspiring stuff, thanks!
@patternsinsand18 күн бұрын
Glad you enjoyed the video. The 180 is a great lens and don't forget the value of that aperture ring too. I do find zooms more practical in many ways at the telephoto lens but the size and simplicity of this lens as well as the beauty of the rendering are what made me go for it rather than the 80-200mm.

I've felt the 28mm was a weak focal length since the 70s film days. Wide enough to have distorted edges, not wide enough to really be panoramic. Ah, but put it on a digital crop sensor, it becomes a 42mm and splits the difference between 35mm ( a little to wide)and the 50mm ( a little too tight ).
