Incredible that Roscoe Turner was part of the inspiration for Bob Hoover to become a pilot. I have always loved the story of Roscoe Turner and his pet lion Gilmore who flew around with Roscoe in the cockpit of his planes until he became too big to fit anymore. Turner was much of the inspiration of modern day pilot uniforms of both civilian aviation and also military aviation. Turner believed that in order for a pilot to be considered a "profession" that the pilot needed to 100% look the part. Turner was also well known for his flamboyance and love of the limelight which was also partly the reason he wanted to wear a snappy looking uniform when performing at air shows and also when flying for business aviation. The "Turner Special" was a plane of his own design which was one of the fastest airplanes of it's era and now is on display at the Smithsonian. I'm sure Turner followed Bob Hoover's success until his death in 1970. Hoover is considered one of the greatest aircraft pilots of all time and could do things with an aircraft that not many other pilots in the world could do. Bob Hoover was an inspiration and friend to Sean Tucker who is probably the second greatest pilot of all time and one of the only pilots in history to be allowed to fly in formation with The Blue Angels and the Air Force Thunderbirds demonstration teams.

Interviewed Harrison on some press junkets, also connected with him at an aviation event in Denver. He’s also surprisingly soft-spoken. A classy gentleman by any measure.

Back in 1980,I was a sophomore in high school at Livingston academy,in Livingston tennessee.About 300 of us were on the physical education field and the airport was on a high mountain behind us.A yellow twin engine aircraft came off the mountain and rolled upside down right over our heads. We jumped for joy and said ya,ya,ya I know that was Bob hoover.Never saw it before,or since. He was know for doing that.He would land and tell the folks at the strip he was in training. Then, leave and roll upside down to get that aaahhhh moment.

I worked for an eccentric billionaire in the 1980s. He had one of Hoover's aerocommanders. It still had the g-meter in it. Great aircraft!! Flew in it many times. BTW, this was just one of two shrikes he had.

When I was assigned to provide the architecture services for John Myers Long Beach FBO Offices’ remodel, in the early 90’s, I had no idea who he was. He told me he was a test pilot and told me he had crashed the Flying Wing and a helicopter (I forgot which one) over the years and showed me the extensive burn scars on his hands. I didn’t know people survived helicopter crashes until that day. His offices were full of a lot of impressive memorabilia that I didn’t understand, at the time, the significance of. John told me stories about more than aviation and I thoroughly enjoyed learning a very different vocabulary than architecture and design vocabulary. I called my father one night and told him I was working with this really interesting guy, John Myers, on his offices & hangars remodel and asked him, What was the Flying Wing all about. My father said, You’re working for the Maestro! Thus began my learning about this famous test pilot, X-Planes and he inspired me to get my private pilot’s license. RIP, Mr. Myers.

I will never forget the first time. Met Frank… it was at the Helicopter Association International Show in Miami in 1993. He just got the R44 certified, and I was opening every panel, so I could to look at it. While I was in the military I use to go to a local airport in Maryland to fly. I had an emergency at Washington DC executive in a R22, where one of the bearings burned up in flight. I was looking throughout the R44 for what was changed and thought Frank was a sales guy. I was working for the FAA at the time as an Airway Transportation Systems Specialist… I didn’t certify or remove aircraft certifications, but anyone with an FAA on their badge was looked at as trouble. I looked at his symposium badge and saw Robinson, so I naturally thought he was an employee there to sell helicopters. I began to explain how I had to put an R22 down because of a bearing failure. He looked at me with a bit of a concerned look on his face. He began to explain what was changed from the R22 to the R44. He explained that the bearing had been changed from round to roller bearings. I then chimed in; wouldn’t that cause more friction, more heat, and a quicker failure. He stopped and looked at my symposium badge again. I realized he was looking at the FAA. Still not knowing who I was talking to, I said, it is no big deal just tell one of the engineers my thoughts. It was then he said, you are talking to the right guy, I’m Frank Robinson… I went from smart ass 20 something punk kid to worship mode in a split second. I thanked him for making the R22 because without it, I never would have got to fly a helicopter. For me it was like meeting the Wright brothers…or Schweizer for helicopters.
