totally wrong about that "no one wants to hear" though I legit thought that was the coolest sounding part of everything he played this video
@dickrichard62610 күн бұрын
You just don't understand. What he played before saying that was "off-putting" especially compared to other types of riffs with other modes that are more inherently "pleasing". Really it's all comes down to context and his point was that it does work, you just can't play slow and linger on the b2 and b6 in phrygian without it having an unresolved "uncatchy" effect.

Like Miles Davis said: " No note is wrong until the next one is played." I almost like the educational videos of GG better than when he is performing, cause I can kinda sorta keep up... What a magninficent player and person.

Guthrie is a fabulous guitar player that has forgotten more theory than most guitar players will ever learn. All of this is great and impressive. But Great Melody and Lyrics recorded by the right artist sells albums. I have never heard Guthrie or any other advanced guitarist talk about the Money end of Music. They call it the Music Business for a reason and if you don't understand the Financial end of it as well as he does the Theory end of Music, you go hungry. It's why they coined the phrase "Starving Musician!" With an estimated 2024 wealth of $6 million dollars Guthrie is not in the gutter with the rest of us poor guitar players, but is behind many other Famous guitarists of lower caliber and less than %5 of his Theory Knowledge. Because they have found their nich and capitolized on it while Guthrie is still looking for his.

Why does Guthrie's ring finger make these strange laying-on movements on the fretboard? I don't have a guitar here now, but I'm not sure if this is normal.

Using the circle of 5ths, find the notes of any diatonic scale, notice that those notes form a consecutive group on the circle. The notes that are further away from the center of that group are going to be the spicy ones. The further out you go, the spicier it gets. Notice that any pentatonic scale is also a group of notes, just a smaller set. Now notice that pentatonic notes are almost always ok, sound good enough. If you don't know what to play, you can play these. These are the butter notes, Mr. Davis made a recommendation not to play them. The benefits of negative space, in that view, outweigh the clutter of things that fit. Very modern.
