Interesting trip! Its also possible to take Whatcom Transit's 71x route from Bellingham to Sumas WA, and walk across the border there and connect to the Abbotsford transit system. Its only a five minute walk from the bus stop in Sumas to the border station, and the bus stop is just on the other side of the border. Abbotsford has an express bus now that goes on the freeway all the way to the Skytrain in Coquitlam as well. Timing may be tricky since the bus to Sumas only goes a couple times a day.

I’ve been doing a twice a week commute (was originally once a week) between York, in southern Pennsylvania and Washington DC. It’s around 90 miles one way. Before I had a reasonable parking option (the southbound drive is 1h35-1h40 when I leave at 4 am but the northbound is 2h20-2h50 whenever I leave), I was driving 2/3 of the way to a commuter bus or driving 1/3 of the way to a combination of light rail, heavy rail, subway, and bus. Commuting with transit is 3 hours each way, guaranteed. It’s really unfortunate how poor mass transit is, particularly interchanging between systems and going to and from the suburbs of a pretty small city.

Instead of walking on the highway, could you not walk down Beach Road at the border into White Rock?

I think you would enjoy a small route change from White Rock Centre, take the 321 To Surrey Centre Station and the Elevated Expo Line* to Waterfront. Instead of a tunnel for most of the light rail you get scenic view of the areas. *Expo Line, the first lrt to be running and the reason it has the nickname Skytrain.

3 hours or more for taking buses in LA is quite normal. Thats the reason if people have choices they will find a job that requires less than 2 buses, but life is hard, you vannot find it. Past 30 year LA transit improvement does not change. Ok, it changes some bus routes from 1 to 2 . That makes life more difficult. I live near Cal Poly Pomona closer to Orange county. Back in 90, my brother used to commute to 51 miles away for more than a year. Luckily, the last stretch was n still is 20 minutes frequency, so it was 2 n half hours. One time i traveled to 25 miles, it was 2 and half hours. That was because I decided to walk 25 more minutes instead of taking buses. Recently my MD advised me to visit a specialist in that area, it will be 3 hours. 9 months has gone by, i have not. LA has not changed on local bus service routes. Within LA county, unless the work is at major bus routes, many destinations require more than one bus is 2 plus hours regardless of distance . The worst part is inter county. I live near orange county. I was asked by MD to see MD 10 miles away. I had choices of taking 4 buses or 1 bus, metrolink rail n walk an hour. Taking buses took requires 3 plus hours. Taking rails requires 4 plus hours. Someone joked n said it was faster for me walk along the freeway. I used to work 3 minutes walking distance from Angel Stadium. I took uber everyday except Friday night, i took bus. It was 3 plus hour bus ride. The reason it was 3 hour was there is a frequent 20 minute frequency bus right by Angel Stadium. Then I had to take one hour frequency bus to 4.5 miles from where i live, if i walk, it would take me 90 minutes. I was lazy all the time by taking two buses. Most of the time was waiting. Some time, i took bus to somewhere that required me to walk 1 n half miles, 45 minutes walking. A lady livec in hacienda heights, 6 miles from where i lived. She worked 5 more miles from Angel Stadium, it was 4 plus hours one way. She left 4 some thing. She arrived at her work around 9am. Don't know what time she left work, but she wouldn't get home till 9 something pm. She did it for years. You think that was bad. The company moved to further south to Irvine. No one she could make. I n other bus riders were trying to help her. There was no easy way. I did tell her to take the bus n metrolink, that would be 2 n half hours. Her coworker still had from train station to work. I believe she lost jobs. Super commuter to New York is easy. Try to commute in LA, it is hell. LA has not done a lot while brag meagre miles of rails

You have to take three different county transit systems to get from Seattle to Blaine! That is the cumbersome part and where you have timing issues! When you cross the border into Surrey, BC you are only dealing with Translink!. In King County (Seattle area) you have Sound Transit. In SnoHo Snohomish County (Everett) you have Community Transit! Getting to Mount Vernon you have the Skagit County Transit. Then North to Bellingham on the Whatcom County Transit Authority all the way to Blaine via Ferndale!

When you want to do this south to north and all of washington id be up to going. I did the research back in 2019 to go only on public transit.

When I tour on the bike, I always check where and when a bus is available in case I need to extract myself from some situation like mechanical issues. Always been aware of these routs here but only used the 70b to Blaine and of course on the Canadian side after landing in YVR to get to the border. Sounds like you could also do Seattle Victoria using BC Ferries and return Victoria to Seattle through Port Angeles Or Victoria to Port Townsend to Blaine via Whidby Island to Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay back to Victoria. All on transit. Good video although could use more scenery

Nice video! At least it is an available option that is available is many hours of the day and even during weekend, a “luxury” that many other American cities would not even have! It’s a long commute but I always envy those in Pacific Northwest that transit actually exist for such commute!

I did this in November 2021 because the only other options were a 2000 dollar flight, renting a car, or buying a car. People would ask me why I didn't do Amtrak or Greyhound but those were not options in November 2021.

As a Floridian, I cant imagine wasting all that time and money driving in traffic just to ski down an overcrowded snow slope in a yuppy overpriced resort town. A lot easier to make a chill trip to the beach or a scenic coastline by car or transit (if it's there)

Not sure about the buses in Washington State but in metro Vancouver you can put your bike on the Bus and Skytrain

You could do this to Victoria BC also from Seattle the bus will drop you off at the Victoria Ferry terminal, Then just walk on the Ferry , And take the Victoria BC Transit

I live in the Miami metro area. I take 2 buses, the MDT #17; then I transfer to the #77, which drops me right in front of my office. Total time one way is about 1 hr 1 min. That includes the walk from my apartment door to my first bus stop. My workplace is 8.2 miles from my apartment.

Why don't you show the actual stops and stations? If your aim is to encourage people to use transit it would give them confidence to know what their touchpoints and destinations look like ( we humans take comfort in the familiar ) it's also a beautiful part of the world so maybe some scenes from your trip? I was (pleasantly) surprised when visiting Salt Lake City a few years ago that I could catch a local bus from the light rail to ski resorts.

Can bikes be taken on all buses going southbound? Seems like it would be a fun trip on a bike as it's just the border traverse that you have to contend with.

this trip is a ton of fun! i had a crush on someone who lived in olympia and i bussed down there a couple of times early in the morning to be absolutely too nosey. couple great bike trails as well, some cool parks, few short hikes. lots of reasons to take a day trip down.

did most of this route in reverse riding public transit back from a bike trip everett to bellingham! absolutely planning to try the route all the way up to vancouver when i get my passport later this summer. Total aside, but the highlight of that bike trip was stopping at the shell in Conway, i was recently out as a trans woman at the time and very sweaty from riding, definitely not even tentatively passing. Walked up to the deli counter inside to grab some real food for the first time in the trip. The guy at the counter, who looked like a metalhead type, very jovial, says "Good morning ma'am thanks for coming in and what can i get for you today?" and i mean this dude fuckin sold it, like i was a god damn vip. got some chicken tenders or something, this dude gave me the whole bow and wave and said "enjoy and have a great day ma'am". was a real fuckin relief, i was terrified i'd get kicked out of places outside the city. Funny enough in Anacortes, much bigger city, where i stayed the night, that wasn't too far off. people glared at me most places i went in and once i got a blank stare from a bartender. anyways lets fuckin go Conway

For Washington State they might be better off combining Bellingham Mount Vernon and Seattle Transit Cards into a single one think of it as Darmstadt Wiesbaden Mainz Frankfurt am Main combine their own Transit tickets into a regional tariff Rhenmain Verkehrsverbund RMV. Translate into German name into English results with this Rhine Main Transit Network or Rhine Main transport tariff. If that happens Seattle Washington all the way to Blaine. The next step is having Vancouver British Columbia join it just like how you can use a Hong Kong Octopus Card in Shenzhen. That versions allows them to top up in Hong Kong dollar then pay in Chinese Yuan. If that were to happen to Seattle and Vancouver it would be something like this refill in US Dollars then once you cross the border into Vancouver British Columbia ticket fee is paid with Canadian dollars.

My commute is usually 2.5 hours from New Haven, CT to Manhattan in NYC, via Metro-North (75 miles). My boss commutes from Montauk Long Island to NYC 2x a week via LIRR in 3.5 hours. (118 miles). 😩

Wow. I always wondered how long it would take to get to Olympia from Seattle by transit. I wish there were more transit options to Olympia from Seattle. I also wish the Sounder was more frequent.

As easy as you made it look, spending 6 hours each office day on the road is just too brutal, especially during winter months when daylight hours are shorter. That's potentially a quarter of your life spent on buses and trams lol great vid tho many thanks (My commute takes around 2 hours each way and I do it 5 times a week)

Very interesting experience. I have a 16 mile (25 km) commute to go to work here in Vancouver. It takes me 35 min average driving my electric car. I would take me 1 hour and 30 min at least using public transit! I love your videos. (And I have to say, you are very handsome too!)
