How lovely to hear this music from a true master of his trade…we were so fortunate to be young in the 60s and 70s , real music then.

Saw him the summer before he died. He was very reluctant to play the gig we are told. Pre 9991 I booked him twice at the Birminghsm Guitar Club. Is it Ray Warleigh who plays this beautiful flute on this track?

Nice to hear memories of John meeting his public. It is Tony Roberts playing flute here

Gwyllm: Thanks for re-posting this! I was fortunate to have heard John and Bert together @ the Freight and Salvage, Berkeley, CA. Didn't realize Swarbrick was on this cut...heard him once w/ Fairport @ Croperdy, UK. Last night I discovered Swarb and Thompson playing some reels on You Tube...worth sussing out.

Many thanks! Swarb is not in this recording, where John is accompanied by Tony Roberts, flute and Don Harper, viola. He (DS) is on many tracks in side A of the original LP, though.

@@fabcillo yes, it did not sound like Swarb at all.

Swarb played on some tracks in Side A of the album. Here you can listen to Don Harper playing the viola. I am not aware of other folk recordings Harper is involved in, but here he is simply superb

This is what music is meant to be. John was a great musician and fortunately with him there were a few more who stayed on the real musical road. In the late 1960s it all seemed to be going great and then came that godforsaken pop music with its glamor and glitter and it has never gotten better with folklore, with our society, our dreams for a better world half a century before it now dawns that the earth is up. Fortunately, I can feed on melodies and original lived-in versions like yours. May you dwell forever in the enchanted garden

A gorgeous arrangement. Tony Roberts (flute) is a name I rarely see. He played on the Ship of Folks album, but I've not encountered him elsewhere. Does anyone reading this know what else he's played on?
@fabcillo2 жыл бұрын
Tony Robert's was part of the John Renbourn Group, in all their recordings (try A Maid in Bedlam and The Enchanted Garden). He is also playing in some of his solo albums, among which The Black Baloon stands as unmissable piece of music
