I mean... He could've asked the Archmaster if he could loan some relevant books from the archive, rather than access the entire area. If you think about how you actually conduct research, you look until you find a lead, then cross-reference that lead with its primary sources.

The counter argument should be something along the lines of: "Each of those events was ended by people acting, but nobody is acting against the Army of the Dead because nobody knows about them or even entertains the idea that they exist. If that were to change, then this night may be seen through like the rest."

Hope for some, concern for others. To me Ebrose and the others were burying their heads in the sand, confident that the storm will pass. But the Army of the Dead wasn't Roberts Rebellion or Aegon's Conquest, it wasn't even like the Long Night when Magic was still around to help fight the monsters. The Night King almost won, if Arya had been two seconds too late, if the King had killed her before she pulled that knife trick, he would have won and nothing south of Winterfell could have stopped him, that's how close the world came to ending.

It does: When you have the courage and the conviction to do something about it. When calamity comes, it does pass. Disaster, war, slaughter. But only because people put in the effort. When "This too will Pass", becomes a reason not to Act, then it won't.

In context of the story, it can give hope but really, he is just thinking logically. The fact is every winter that came has ended but he also didn't know there was an actual magical undead general plotting a mass attack. I highly doubt he was so confidently say what he said here if he really knew the whole story. The wall does fail after all.

I think that is interesting, because we have had many different experiences with maesters throughout the series. The Grand Maester was just a massive pervert and rat. The Archmaesters were more about teaching. Maester Aemon was a more political figure than most. And it goes back to the Archmaester was saying, we become maesters for different reasons.
