Nice tasting. So as a rule of thumb, how long before refrigerating the fruit causes negative results?
@harmonysdragons261015 сағат бұрын
@FurFeathersandFlowers 3-5 days is too many for some varieties. The other ones didn't affect much. Only the Countryroads fruit turned to jam, but it was really good. Just needed some toast to go with it. The Fruit Punch and Physical Graffiti were picked today and placed in the fridge for about an hour.

Is this variety self fertile??
@harmonysdragons261016 күн бұрын
Don't waste your time on this one. Rots and gets diseases easily. Had it for 2 years and not much growth. It's went in the trash. Paid a lot for 2yrs of my time.
@gldiv101417 күн бұрын
I was under the impression that American Beauty was self pollinating! Why do you pollinate?
@harmonysdragons261017 күн бұрын
@gldiv1014 the one I have is self fertile and self pollinating. But when it's pollinated with its own pollen, the fruit size is smaller. So it's better to cross pollinate with pollen from a large fruit variety like La Verne Pink or Red, Haley's Comet, and a few others. When you use pollen from small fruits like Sugar a Dragon, Neon, Voodoo Child, etc, you'll get small fruits. Pollen plays a huge role in fruit size and flavor complexity. Red Jaina so far is the only variety that doesn't have any change in flavor, only in fruit size when crossed pollinated.
@harmonysdragons261017 күн бұрын
@gldiv1014 in regards to American Beauty, depending on who and where you got it from. It can be self fertile and hand pollinate, self fertile and self pollinating, self sterile and cross pollinate. It could be G1, G2, G3, Bien Hoa Red, Quang Ong Self Fertile that requires hand pollination, or another unknown Guatemalan variety. It can also be another variety sold to you as American Beauty, but really, it is something else. I've seen too many times that people sell cuttings as American Beauty because it sells, but the truth is that variety isn't even correct. So always do your research on the variety you want and the grower before you purchase.
@gldiv101417 күн бұрын
@@harmonysdragons2610Good to know! I have the American Beauty and just starting out. The reason I bought it was because of the self pollination! Now you have me worried because now I have to deal with the fact that it could not even be American Beauty!😩
@harmonysdragons261017 күн бұрын
@gldiv1014 join my Facebook group, Harmony's Dragons, then send me a picture of your American Beauty. I can tell you if it's a Guatemalan variety or not.

Do you find that the lack of direct sunlight on your fruit, affect it's sweetness level when it comes time for harvest?
@harmonysdragons261026 күн бұрын
@eyedye yes, that's why once the fruit fills the cup, I'll remove it so it can finish ripening. While it's still green and growing, it's not building up any sugar. That will happen during the last week once it starts changing colors. So far, using this technique with the cups has kept my fruits from rotting and bacterial infection during the early stages.

Why is the riser covered in burlap?
@harmonysdragons26102 ай бұрын
@Hyundairobitdog the riser? You mean the trellis post? Originally for the dragon fruit aerial roots to hold on to. But they tend to hold moisture and cause bacteria formation. They last less than a year in the post. So for future trelis builds, I no longer use burlap.

It would be great if we have a list of related varieties. So we don't polinate with their sisters.
@harmonysdragons26103 ай бұрын
@cansarratt3407 there's a list somewhere. Mine is a mental one from what I've learned and shared. There's too many that are related, and so many noids that can be. So just experiment in your yard and take notes of what worked and didn't work. What gave you big fruits and small fruits. If you have questions, you can always ask me.
