Here's my list (with comments as to why I put them in certain places) as a Brisbane supporter: 18. West Coast. Literally WHY did they hire Birds of Tokyo to make a new team song for them? The current song does NOT sound like a proper AFL team song. The Eagles would be MUCH better off combining elements of their first and second iterations of their song. 17. Carlton. Yes, I know it's all about tradition, but when you want your team to look fierce for the competition, this song doesn't cut it. Very slow, average lyrics and a controversial song that they based it on. It's just boring. 16. North Melbourne. This one is very simple, and it works to some extent. However, it doesn't make the Roos seem like much of a threat, and looking at the last 8 years, they really haven't been. 15. St Kilda. The instrumental is fun, and the song is upbeat, but where it flops is that not only is it the shortest team song in the league, it has the simplest lyrics of them all. It's literally a carbon copy of the traditional 'When the Saints Go Marching In", just with three words changed. 14. Melbourne. They're the oldest club, and their song certainly reflects it, being the only team song in the league not to mention their team name nor their location. The song gets you going, sure, but for a team literally named the Demons? This doesn't really reflect the name. 13. Geelong. The lyrics are unironically the best part of this song. Now that Toreador has been dominated recently by the Five Nights at Freddy's fandom, the new generation of AFL fans might not be able to get it out of their heads, and that's part of what I'm worried about this song. My memory has been scarred. 12. Brisbane. I'll be the first to admit that our song ain't the best, but it's sure fun to shout it loudly at the Gabba. A relatively crappy attempt to combine traditional and modern elements, considering other team songs that are higher on this list. The instrumental specifically makes it sound cheap and not exactly suited for the nation's largest sporting league. 11. Hawthorn. I like how the song mentions perseverance indirectly. It brings the core values of the club into play, but again; not exactly how I would picture the team song for a team named the Hawks, considering the methods of attack IRL hawks use. 10. Essendon. It's a decent team song, and it's got a fun instrumental, but the lyrics seem to be of inflated ego, especially as of recently. The Bombers have really fallen off since their last premiership in 2000 and their last finals win in 2004. Good song, but the team they have now doesn't reflect their song or their history. 9. Adelaide. I like that this team song has a second verse instead of repeating the first verse after the instrumental. The instrumental is relatively traditional, for a club formed in 1990, and it doesn't reflect how ominous crows can be IRL. Tradition works, but it sure does steer away from potential sometimes. 8. Collingwood. It's very iconic, but again; IRL magpies are a lot scarier than this song makes Collingwood out to be. Bonus points for mentioning and shouting out their fans. The most loyal fans are what always will be who give the most to footy clubs, no matter how much corporate tries to meddle with it. Also, mentioning team spirit is always a bonus. 7. Sydney. What I like about this team song is that they based it on another sports club song: the Victory March of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, a college gridiron club from Indiana, USA. They add their own flair to it, however, which I love. You don't want your team song sounding like a carbon copy (looking at you, Saints). I especially love the banjo they add into the instrumental, along with keeping the elegance of the lyrics. 6. Fremantle. Shortening their original team song was perhaps one of the greatest decisions in the Dockers' 30-year history. Not only that, they revamped it at the same time to sound more tolerable, and BOY, did they succeed in that. Keeps it simple, shows the other teams that this club means business, and has an epic instrumental. Pretty good team song overall. 5. Western Bulldogs. This song combines traditional and contemporary elements a lot more flawlessly than Brisbane's does, keeping the Footscray name at its core, while also embracing new journeys to come. A lot more aggressive than their old song, which makes the Bulldogs look and sound more like a league threat. Massive team song glow-up, along with Freo's. 4. Gold Coast. I love that the Suns just came up with this song out of the blue, with no song that it was based on. A completely original song that reflects the Suns' youth as a club while also making them sound like a luring threat coming through the league, with lyrics that make them seem legit. I just hope we get to hear this song in the finals one day... 3. Port Adelaide. I may not like Port as a club, or its supporters, but I can't argue with their song. A bombastic intro that makes a meaningful entrance for the Power, and some of the most threatening lyrics in the league by far. I also admire the choice to put a bridge in to signify their history not only as an AFL club, but their struggle to become one from the SANFL because of Collingwood, not to mention praising their players and fans. 2. Richmond. This team song is just too iconic and fun not to have in the top 5. The lyrics highlight how much grit the players have for their club, their perseverance, and their history all in one. The instrumental combines tradition, fun and ambition in a seamless way, not to mention the massive YELLOW AND BLACK they sneak in at the end of the verse. Always a glorious song, whether you're a member of the Tiger Army or not. 1. Greater Western Sydney. They may be the most recently formed team in the league, but their song makes them look somewhat traditional, while also making them seem genuinely the most threatening team in the league. The lyrics most definitely highlight that. The instrumental is a certified banger, while also being pretty terrifying to hear when playing the Giants, especially at Engie Stadium itself. Each aspect of the song reflects who the Giants are and what they plan to do. Without a doubt, I consider their song the best in the league.
