The shop is coming along and looking good! Houses were built with plank roofs for many many years, with no problems. Those spiral nails hold like nobody's business. It's dang near impossible to pull them out. I can't imagine you'll have any trouble. It's super cool that you're building with lumber you milled yourself. I know it's more labor but I'm guessing you saved quite a bit of cash by not buying lumber.
@bushrob4113 ай бұрын
@@thehappychiselllc thank you. I'm much further along I'm just behind on my update schedule My old man's house is 99.99% rough planks. The only spot on the roof that's plywood is where the porch joins. The settling ripped a gap so we put plywood there to tie it together. Hasn't moved sense. Oh its absolutely a ton of work but the result is beyond worth it. And yes those nails hold strong! The floor was built a few years ago and hardly any nails popped and it was fully weather exposed And yes I saved a ton! If I discount the cost of fuel for logging equipment, the blades and upkeep, I will have spent less than $900 in raw materials.

How’s the dust collection? Also, how is the fence? I’ve heard horror stories about Ridgid’s fences not being square.

@@stevesiefken2696 dust collection is not bad with a moderate vacuum. I didnt have one till a few months ago. I can't say how well with a really good one or a dust collector but I assume much better. My fence is dead on to the blade. It was squared by the previous owner. Apparently the issues with the ridgid isn't the fence but the blade trunions don't have enough adjustment range in some.

Are they left unfinished or do they get some sort of oil, varnish, etc? Also, are you willing to reveal what they retail for and what you charge for them? I'm trying to get an idea on what shop rate/hr to factor into my own projects.
@bushrob4115 ай бұрын
@@kreggmiller9643 for myself I retail between $5 and $8 depending on the style. You can check another video I have posted showing other ones. This particular batch is 200 units at cost for a friend. He makes leather hair pieces that the stick fits into. So works out to $2.50 per unit. I average 5 mins per before finish. So the average shop per hour ratio is $30/h so surprisingly a decent money maker and that's on cost ones. It's $60/h on retail for myself ones. Finish is my board butter I use on my cutting boards. Any food contact safe oil would be fine as well. I would personally stay away from oil based varnish or poly. Water based would be fine

If you do at some point try the mesh paper, like 3m Xtract Cubitron (highly recommended) be sure to add a pad saver, otherwise you run the risk of destroying the existing sander pad.

So far the wear has been non-existent. Izzy mentions in his video on it if any wear of the slides does happen, it's just a matter of removing the screws, pushing the slide together and drilling new screws in to tighten. Also you could use thin CA glue along the cut edge to harden the fibers and they would increase long-term wear
@Your_Friend_Corey Жыл бұрын
@@bushrob411 do you think it needs Baltic birch? And any idea roughly how much plywood is required? Like if 2. 2'x4' handy panels would be enough
@bushrob411 Жыл бұрын
@@Your_Friend_Corey izzys plans do show how much plywood you need and it's a bit more than 1 handy pannel. I think 33 x 48 In saying that. I used some scrap Baltic birch plywood I had from another design and 1 new handy pannel and I ended up with a big chunk left over. If you make the movement levers and links from another plywood scraps, 1 handy panel should be plenty. Also I used second grade Baltic birch from Kent.
