In Maine most is off the major highways but there is some route 1 areas and it’s nerve racking.

Very cool indeed. Don't take for granted our greenways, trails, parks, etc in the Triangle. They're wonderful resources which even "outsiders" appreciate.

I live closer towards the Richmond, colonial heights, Petersburg section of the Fall trail and I can not WAIT until it is all connected. I have to drive 30 min to enjoy the richmond section because it all highway between me and the longer more open more beautiful parts of the trails. I would love to start at Petersburg and be able to stay on my bike or hike all the way to richmond to enjoy a meal and come back in the same day. Let alone bike as far as I can and be able to stay overnight somewhere bike friendly! Take a shower stretch and bike back home! wow!

Thank you Brent…. After watching a number of videos on the safety aspect of the East Coast Greenway trail, I have decided to pick up an Amtrak train in Jacksonville to Alexandria, VA. Then continue on - my destination being Bar Harbor, Me. I will be taking a ferry from there to Nova Scotia.

I started following you on this journey about a week into it. I would check on your IG daily to see your progress. I loved the interactions you had with us when you did some Q & A sessions. If I wasn't as old as I am, I would love to have walked a great distance like you did. It was sad to see Timmy go but he was really getting to be. pain. I loved watching the trail from Monkey's point of view and enjoyed seeing Nemo's glare when you told her to sit in the cart when he had the foot issue. I travel the east coast often and in the past two months I drove from NJ to Miami. It was fun to see the same things you pointed out on your walks. (The very narrow 17S highways between Myrtle Beach SC and Charleston SC. The bridges with construction leaving you no where to safely walk. Miami, where there the ECG seems to simply disappear and the area after where alligators lurk!. Are you able to have someone create/edit your IG posts into one long video? They were very entertaining. Looking forward to watching you gut the bus-hopefully some day we will meet.

Can't tell you how excited I am about that bridge over the Patuxent River. I've biked straight up Route 1 from D.C. to Baltimore a couple of times because there wasn't really an obvious better way to go, and it was... not super fun.

Wasn't the Mount Vernon Memorial Highway Trail (VA) also designated in 2023?
@EastCoastGreenwayAlliance
@EastCoastGreenwayAlliance 8 ай бұрын
Thanks for asking! We are very proud that the new Mount Vernon Memorial Highway Trail is now a part of the East Coast Greenway and completes the Greenway in Fairfax County and incredibly appreciate of Fairfax County and advocates in Fairfax and Northern Virginia for making this project happen! Our designation process requires a letter of support from the agency who controls the right-of-way, in this case that is the Virginia Department of Transportation. While VDOT is supportive of many projects along the Greenway in Virginia (completed projects, as well as ones currently in planning), they generally do not submit formal designation support letters to the Alliance.

This trail reminds me of the Appalachian Trail. We need the ECG to become a part of the Federal system and then maybe we can actually see something get done on it. In its current state I tell people to avoid it at all cost. Just not worth risking your life on. Good luck with it.

When my 15 year old son and I rode from FL to NY in 2013 we abandoned the ECG and passed through Conway, SC on the way west to Route 301 north. From 301 we cut over to the Jamestown Scotland Ferry to get into Williamsburg, VA. I used 301 back in 1986 and it was still a good way to go north all those years later. I'd use it again... With in excess of 8,600 miles of self supported touring and 80K+ of cycling behind me I know when it's not worth the risk... Route 301 is safer as the bulk of the N/S traffic is on I-95 and you miss the beach traffic and Route 17 construction and poor shoulder. We also happened to get dead ended trying to leave FL and go to Kingsland, GA. DOT closed the St. Mary's River turn bridge for repairs without notifying ECG or Adventure Cycling Association so no detour info was available from either. I notified ECG and happened to meet the owner of the bicycle shop in St. Mary's... he stopped when he saw us on the side of 17 looking at maps. He worked with ECG as a volunteer and wasn't aware of the closure either... He offered to come get us the next day and bring us around I-95 but we decided to go west to the next bridge near Folkston... my son wanted to see a wild alligator at the Okefenokee wildlife refuge! We went back east to see places like Brunswick, Savannah, and Charleston. If I knew then what I learned later we would have gone over to 301 after Charleston to get away from the beach traffic. God's speed in closing the gaps in the off-road route!

As a resident of the ECG and an avid WarmShowers host, I can’t even begin to tell you the horror stories my guests have shared about the GA/SC segments. I’m glad to hear they are at least attempting to make changes necessary, but it is frustrating when things move at the speed of government. Keep fighting the good fight. It’s worth it.

As much as I want to the ECG to succeed, I think it is HIGHLY irresponsible of you to promote passage on the so-called "high stress" sections of the route without mentioning the tragic death of Kristopher Cotton, who was struck and killed on the South Carolina route. Yes, we all want a greenway from Maine to Florida, but South Carolina as a whole is simply not ready for prime time. Until South Carolina is fixed, there really is no point of biking/walking this route, that is, unless you are current on your life insurance policy.
@williamsimpson716
@williamsimpson716 9 ай бұрын
As a South Carolinian I, unfortunately, have to agree. The sections of the Greenway along Route 17 are not just high stress, they are downrght dangerous in the extreme. There are areas where there is absolutely no shoulder at all. The right lane of traffic ends in the grass on the side of the heavily travelled road with traffic moving at well over 60 MPH. Put two vehicles side by side on these stretches and there is no room for a cyclist or walker to get out of the way. I have imagined simply running an asphalt or gravel path down the middle of the highway median which might deal with some of those areas. But there are still bridges with no shoulder and no median. The bottom line is this. Until these truly hazardous parts of the proposed route are dealt with, it is irresponsible to suggest that the ECG in South Carolina is even remotely viable. It should be made clear that it is not yet possible to travel from Key West to Maine without putting oneself at significant risk. Just my two cents worth.
