Thanks for the video. I too, have old Dewalt (though 14.4V) with dead batteries, that I rebuilt years ago but now dead again and am on the fence about adapting to the Ryobi batteries because as you show in the video, the batteries still so far out the bottom. That's the rub with Ryobi batteries. I love that they haven't changed the format in around 20 years, yet to have that stalk at the top means they aren't the best for this kind of adaptation. My other alternative is just rebuild the pack with 4 x 18650 Li-Ion that I have lying around plus a BMS board, then decide whether to put a barrel socket on it for a ~17V PSU, or one of those boost USB input boards, or to mod the original charger with either of those. Think I'm going ahead with an adapter similar to how you did it but reverse the battery orientation, cut the stem shorter and be rid of the screws at the top and instead wrap epoxied cloth around it, and notch out the top of the Dewalt battery so it sits that much further up. I'm hoping I can make it at least 2/3rds of an inch shorter than yours.

Seems like you did drill on the low speed and without drilling emulsion, so practically you burnt the cutting edge. You can hear the squeeking sound, since then you didn't drill anymore.

How's it holding up after 1 yr
@garageadz11 ай бұрын
It's still going really well, I've changed the gearing on it to suit more of what I'm working with. The jaws slip a fair but, it seems hard to get a lot of torque for them to hold on to parts if I'm trying to manual tap using the jaws so I've been thinking of upgrading those. Otherwise it's pretty decent.

Hey, does this engine start in gear or does it need to be in neutral with the clutch out? Cheers
@garageadz Жыл бұрын
If you wire it up, you can make it start in gear if you want
@fhtyyn Жыл бұрын
@@garageadz Sorry, not sure I follow. Some of these engines have a series of gears that bypasses the transmission and allows them to start with the clutch disengaged (so they'll start in gear with the clutch pulled), on others the kickstart turns the gearbox which turns the crank via the clutch (so they need to be in neutral with the clutch lever out in order to kickstart). Just wondering if this engine will kickstart with the clutch lever pulled? DHZ didn't seem too sure...
@garageadz11 ай бұрын
@fhtyyn yep sorry, to be clear the clutch lever will have a switch on it that disables the starter function. If you don't wire that or don't have the switch, you will be able to start it if in gear or not. I hope this is clearer.
@DT-ge8gd Жыл бұрын
Easier way, without the risk of damaging the little plug insert, or the thread on your bolt which you will need... you just use a g-clamp, and squeeze it back a few millimeters. Done.

Are you happy with w58 gearbox? Would you go the j160 if you had to do it again
@garageadz Жыл бұрын
The W58 is really suited to this combination. J160 is a lot easier to get now and would probably be a better choice if staying with a Toyota gearbox.

There's footage of it running in a few dedicated videos on the channel, namely one from when I took it drag racing on low boost (16psi) and did a 12.0. It's got a lot going on with it at the moment and it should come out swinging pretty hard this year, hopefully deep into 11s.
