Leaenings- 1)) Discover customer needs as well as customer wants. 2)Discovering the unstated customer wants is really the compelling value of the future and that requires a deeper understanding of customers pain points rather than customers stated wants. 3) Depth wise business has advantages over breadth wise business. You need focus. 4) If you have breadth wise business then you cannot go deeper to build world class competencies in this competitive market and someone will take over your business. 5) Customer accepts the fate of the technology (eg- acceptance of mobiles with buttons) 6) Right to play is being the best in the stated wants of the customer, and the right to win comes from delivering the unstated wants of the customer. 7) To become and remain a brand, you got to have a compelling value which comes from the unstated wants of the customer. 8) Constantly explore customer pain points. 9) Any mechanical equipments will fail, even if it is lifecycle failure, it's a question of how quickly and effectively you respond to customer, engage customer to deliver value to the customer. 10) Never argue with the customer. 11) Feeling of belongingness in people 12) Work environment should be challenging, not a mechanical. 13) In most of the companies, compensation is looked from top to bottom, in Elgi, we look from bottom to up, we are very conscious of what people earn at the bottom. 14) People with lowest voice (bottom level) should be listened most. 15) To establish leadership credibility, there has to be consistency in what you say., and staying committed and aligned with your purpose through daily actions. 16) On recognition and reward- it's a process of discovery of talented people along with solid citizens 17) Another company GE is example of an institution more than a company . 18) Institution requires highly talented people along with solid citizens. 19) What is the basic guiding principle that any manager can use to be able to recognise and motivate talent? 20) How should a leader think about competition? Competition is an opportunity. If the competition is perfect, there is no space for you, you need to look at where is the weak competition , that's your opportunity. 21) Viewing the competitor with respect because it is delivering systematically and consistently and also because the competitor is big, does not mean it has to win all the time, it will give you gaps in the fulfilment, that is your opportunity. Recognise that opportunity and combine it with your aspiration. 22) Brand is consistency and experience of everybody who touches the company, not just a customer. Real strength of a brand is in experience not in fancy brochures and advertisements, etc. 23) Being productive is not about firing people, but it's about hiring less. 24) Value to the customer should be differentiatedly compelling from the competition. 25) why is it important for companies to be values driven ? It starts with the principle of building an institution rather than a company. A company is short lived, an institution is forever. In short term it can be looked as inconvenience but in long term these are the things which sustains your profits. 26) Values are not something we chose, these are something we believe. 27) The Cost prudence is not about cost cutting, it's about spending the money carefully. 28) The company is not one function, it's a collection of functions coming together to deliver value to the stakeholder, and experience of the stakeholders can affect our business. 29) if functions do not collaborate, stakeholders experiences dikinishes (Ex- Not paying suppliers on time, if finance says not my job, supplier management is not my concern that's the problem, because larger goal (experience of stakeholder) is more important than the functional goal. 30) Management should be given the freedom to explore mitigative carefully managed risks. 31) Promoters who have skin in the game, has behaviour of risk averseness. 32) So you have tension between Management and Promoters . 33) Independent director who manage this tension triangle, tights together, this brings stability. 34) So these are 3 legs of governance (Management, Promoters and director).

I don't belong to Elgi (yet) but I work in a competitor company, I have watched the full interview of Mr. Jairam Vadararaj and it is mind blowing and very insightful, I can see into his eyes that this all wisdom came from many setbacks, failures, and agility to become competitive and experience. Got to learn lots of things which I might have taken 20+ years to learn in my career. Thank you very much 😊
