Should have fitted a Spit MkIV / 1500 swing spring while doing this job and complete the performance upgrade ? Also… should really have jacked up the rear hubs to normal ride height when tightening up the lower shock nuts ! Unfortunately I don’t think Elin’s Mk3 Spitfire will get any attention during the next few years….
@SteveDentonClassicsКүн бұрын
It's never been about performance. I'm not really interested in that, it's about capturing the sprite of the 60's in a Spitfire Mk3 and maintaining it and keeping it practical for todays era

Hi Steve. I did this job last winter because of a noisy and leaking diff. Not a fun job at all. At the same time i discovered that both rear trunions where completly rusted and not able to move at all. But going from a original gearing 1:4,11 to a 1:3,27 has made the car more pleasant to drive.
@SteveDentonClassicsКүн бұрын
Yeah, there are a number of good upgrades like a 1500 diff you can do to the early cars to give them longer legs, I like mine how it is though 👍

Steve I find that when putting bushs into metal sleeves, also putting a thin coat of lube into the sleeve surface, allows the bush to start easier and less likely to distort while fitting.👍

There’s no need to change the alternator for changing the ignition system to electronic. You’re only changing a mechanical switch for an electronic switch 👍

Initially, did you lift it with the jack under the diff?
@SteveDentonClassics3 ай бұрын
I do indeed, most British cars are safe to jack on the diff. The diff mounts are a weak spot on a TR with IRS, but this is not cause through jacking them up on the diff, it’s caused by torque going through the diff, it’s always the same one that breaks on them, most by now will have been reinforced, or repaired from this sort of things, but I always check them when working on them. But yes you are safe to jack in the diff 👍

Does the pump arm need to behind the cam or on the front side? I know on some British sports cars this is important to make sure the cam actuates the fuel pump.

Hi sir, I am Zack from California and I have a Triumph a 67 model the spitfire 4 mk2. My engine is an 1100 cc engine. My question is would it be possible to mate my original transmission to the 1300 cc or the 1500 cc variant of this engine? Thanks!
@SteveDentonClassics5 ай бұрын
In a word yes, you can mount any Triumph Spitfire engine to any Triumph Spitfire gearbox, the only real issues you’ll have are 1500 gearboxes need a different clutch plate, but with what your suggesting, just use the clutch you have on your current engine. Then the other thing is, your current gearbox will be a 3 rail, there not as strong as a single rail, fitted to the 1500s but they are still interchangeable with what you are doing
