Brilliant writing, brilliant acting … timeless, sarcastic and relevant and sophisticated humor. I'm so happy that I can re-watch these here. Aside from home renovation/decorating shows and Brazilian soap operas, I've rarely watched TV in the last twenty-five years. There's nothing like this now - at least not in the USA. Most everything is total crap these days. No intelligence, no talent .. no soul. All that was here in spades.

I’ve watched this series over the years for sheer pleasure and only now learned Richard Briers has died. I am so sad and sorry. Sadly I too am suddenly really old. How I would love my life over again… even with all its ups and downs. Thank you Richard for all the joy brought to the world.

I hope the bank went on to sack George Cole. A house in the Avenue, Surbiton. Tom Good says it could be a £100,000 house. Talk about a £2 million house!

A police acquaintance of mine touched on this subject that burglars can become very irate if there’s absolutely nothing worth stealing and this kind of maliciousness can be the result. His advice was to always leave something valuable lying around (even 30 or 40 pounds) so they haven’t ’wasted their time’ and make a clean getaway.

I’d make the WORST actress. It would take me weeks to get through scenes like this without laughing hysterically.

So funny and stands the test of time. Compare it to the woke crass garbage served up as comedy today.

When Margot said "obtuse"... I remembered, they were also intelligent. Back then. Just no dress sense, taste, ugly architecture and generally lowest common denominator in just about everything. But there was Tory Sleaze.. thank God. We can identify with the Seventies

I absolutely love this episode. I love the series, but it often makes me extremely uncomfortable how much Barbara and Tom take advantage of Jerry and Margo, but in this one episode alone they make up for most of that. Age discrimination is a very real, and even more so then. Margo and Jerry had already exhausted every idea and resource they had. Tom and Barbara may not have money or contacts, but they certainly have a fierce loyalty that kept them around unlike the other “friends” that abandoned the sinking ship, and they had a tenacity and also lack of shame that meant they were going to try everything even if they didn’t have a clue what they were doing. For Tom to be willing go back to work to help Jerry was particularly touching since he made it clear almost nothing would make him do that. Barbara has some good moments, but Tom’s character in particular really needed this moment to balance him out and humanize him, at least for me. Both Jerry and Margo also gain a ton of depth. In other episodes I often wonder why they are together, but when Jerry gives up his job for Margo I see exactly why she married him and loves him and is committed to them. And being reminded what Margo does for his career and even seeing her say that her flop in the theater isn’t the important thing - it’s the fact that it distracted her from what Jerry is going through, it also makes sense why Jerry loves her in spite of the fact that she is so high maintenance and a bit naive and judgmental. Don’t get me wrong, I loved the show and characters anyway, but to see this balanced, human portrayal of these characters made me appreciate them all so much more.

Excellent comment. The depth and nuance and humanity of these, sometimes flawed but fundamentally decent, people is what makes it so much more than a comedy. Along with a crackling script and 4 actors at the top of their game you have one of the best shows of all time.

A classic episode. I watched right up to the end when the credits were rolling; standing in the pub, Tom kiissing Margos hand and chatting to each other. I'm sure that they were good friends in real life too. Brilliant! ❤
