One of my favourite pc games was (is) "History Line 1914-1918". I'm a little disappointed that it was mentioned here only once, because the "Settlers" consumed most of the time. But still, I'm happy that I've heard the interview with one of the most influencing game developer of 90's. It was a wonderful era of creators with passion.

I think it's harder but you can absolutely make a story for both adults and children. Old myths, fables and fairy tales work on at least 2 levels deep. What the characters DO and what it MEANS from an adult perspective. Hercules is not just a heroes journey, but about greiving and self-forgiveness (he kills his own family at the beginning because of the medling of Hera). In fairy tales, all the characters are often just the conflicting pieces of one person's personality or inner termoil. Or they help show a difficult adult concept like death in an abstract way. And we shelter children now in a way we didn’t used to in previous millennia. I think THAT'S the only reason why kids films don’t entertain adults. And maybe why we have teens who can't handle discussing hard life concepts
@alexanderrichtertdАй бұрын
There are great "for everyone" animation film and series. Things you only get when you're older but entertain both sides. Pixar was a master in it until recently. There is nothing more infuriating than a "kids" movie or series. Most of the time it means: "It's dumb!" but it needs to be the opposite "simple enough for everyone with depth". That's not easy but it looks like we started to either have worse writers and directors or like to separate between the two. How do kids grow up when they're watching dumb movies all the time? Entertainment became such a huge business that quality isn't even close to consumption anymore.
@melindawolfUSАй бұрын
Agree on Ratatouille, the A and B stories do seem designed for different audiences...
@alexanderrichtertdАй бұрын
Yeah, they're great as long as they run in parallel. An opposite example was "Up": Beginning is for grown ups, 2nd part is for children. That didn't really work for either. One of the best intros in animation ... can't remember the rest of the movie.

I spent 17 years at PDI (1995-2012) as Rigging Supervisor and the amazing culture was the greatest gift I received during those amazing years working with incredible people. I now have spent the last 10 years at Google trying to replicate the lessons learned in a very engineer driven environment but it is a very tough battle.

I respect the knowledge and experience of Ed hooks, but I just wanna know, someone tell me whats wrong with creating animation for kids??? why don't we appreciate and respect the children audience? we all grew up watching animations and if were exposed to disturbing stuff and mature themes we would have become too messed up wouldn't we? so is his argument that children can just watch the old stuff and anything new should be made for adults I don't understand really, I see this as an undermining of childhood and supporting and building healthy generations to come, at the expense of making complex dark stories for adults. I am sorry, I respectfully disagree.
@alexanderrichtertd5 ай бұрын
Ed is for children animation. He argues: 1. Using animation to also create mature animation films as animation isn't only for kids. 2. Staying consistent. Pixar's Up is an example where the movie starts for adults and than switches to children animation creating a messy experience. Animation is both for children and adults.

I was taught by a Disney animator in college and he still teaches the “mime” style of acting. And it was fun at first bu when students would try something more natural they would receive criticism about the acting.
@alexanderrichtertd5 ай бұрын
It is a form of animation especially fun for kids but for adults it just feels silly and toonish. Anime also suffers from this overacting element (nose bleed, crazy movements, ...) but there are also a variety of examples with natural acting.
