Hi Stephen, I never do the spag fest ☹️as I’ve never joined the Spaghetti western database even though I do use the site 😎. I should join the forum with you guys, it’s a decent 70’s spaghetti western & somewhat of a different themed movie but enjoyable as I’ve always enjoyed anything that Tomas Milian is in, “Four of the Apocalypse” isn’t a stone cold classic in the sub genre in my opinion like previous movies. Worth watching indeed, excellent job on this video.
@tvnashАй бұрын
You'd like the SWDb forum a lot Carlos, it's a pretty cool space and a lot of nice guys to chat with. I'm happy to have finally seen Four of the Apocalypse, it's a pretty good movie, but one you kind of have to be in the mood for as it is a pretty somber SW. Milian is definitely the best part of the film, even his role is kind of brief. Take care and speak to you soon buddy.

Really interesting as I don't know a lot about westerns so good to get some information, good video matey
@tvnashАй бұрын
Hi there Tim, and thanks very much for watching and commenting. The Italian Westerns are very fun watches and there's quite a lot of hidden gems within the genre. I would recommend starting with the Sergio Leone ones: Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, and Once Upon a Time in the West. Most fans of the genre began with these titles, and then started seeking out the others I talk about in the video. Take care and speak to you soon.

Good commentaries on both films. Although I haven't seen either of them, the titles are familiar. And I think I've seen a trailer for the Fulci film. I admit I tend to avoid Fulci because I've heard so much about his love of violence and gore. But the Barbara Shelley film sounds like something I would like. I considered getting a region free player, but so far haven't done it. Maybe at some point in the future, I'll change my mind. Take care!
@tvnashАй бұрын
Thanks very much for commenting buddy, glad you enjoyed the video. I highly recommend getting a Region Free Blu Ray player, one of the best investments I ever made. It opened up so many doors for me. There's a company called 220-Electronics that sells them for under $120. It's a little expensive, but totally worth it. Lucio Fulci's Thrillers like The Psychic aka Seven Notes in Black and One on Top of the Other aka Perversion Story aren't too violent or gory, are well made, and worth watching. The Black Cat is my one exception to his Horror output. Shadow of the Cat is one of Hammer Films unsung early 60's gems, I think you'd get a kick out of it. Take care, hope you're well, and speak to you soon.

Thanks for talking about Crypt of the Vampire, a film that took me quite a while to appreciate. It used to play on TV back in the 1970s under the title Terror In the Crypt in a cut version that didn't make a lot of sense. And the copy I used to have from Sinister Cinema was pretty bad in quality. The Severin remastered version finally gave me a chance to see it in excellent condition and see its many good points. It has all the ambience of a typical Italian Gothic horror movie, but, really, there isn't much happening, so it turns out to be as much a character study and a mystery as much as anything. The presence of Christopher Lee in such a setting, and yet playing a decent, somewhat weak character, is sort of disorienting. But he gives a really good performance. The film can justifiably be called slow, but I think the long wait for action is worth it. The second film you discuss is totally new to me, but it sounds like it's worth seeing. I love The Wurdulak segment in Black Sabbath!!
@tvnashАй бұрын
Thanks very much for the comment my friend, glad you enjoyed the video. Yeah, I wasn't too sure what to make of Crypt of the Vampire at first, but there was definitely more to like about the film than to not like. Christopher Lee in a more passive kind of role is unusual for sure, but I started looking at it toward the end as this being something totally out of the character's depth and needed all the help he could get. The setting and atmosphere is the big selling point. I think you'd enjoy Night of the Devils, it's a little bloody, but the setting and folklore background is well worth viewing. And it's interesting to Gianni Garko outside the Westen genre. Take care and speak to you soon.

You should check out the original Fright Night, it's an 80's classic and one of my favorite movies. Some of those gems you recommended are hard to find here in Canada.
@tvnash2 ай бұрын
Hi there, and thanks very much for the comment. I have seen Fright Night and wasn't a fan to be honest, but I understand and appreciate the appeal it holds for fans. I did see Abigail over the summer on Peacock and was pleasantly surprised at how good it was. They could've toned down on the gore a little though. Gothic Horror and Folk Horror are my main interests, with the occasional exception here and there. I have heard pricing on physical media in Canada is outrageous, but keep up the hunt, I'm sure you'll score some OK prices soon.

As an English speaking person I had no idea WTF the titles were & had to guess from the pictures. One of the most irritating things about on-line spaghetti western fans is their often 'arrogant petty purity' with film titles in the original language. In this case are they even the original titles! That fact (of lingo fanaticism) is possibly the biggest hurdle for newcomers to the SWMDB site, other than the cliquey nature of the forum. Instead of it being a place to quickly research & cross check films it is a laborious slog of hunting & translating. The perverse arrogance of the 'lingo fanatics' is so ludicrous that there are numerous poseurs who think an Italian language track is the most authentic (even when the film was made with no specific single nationality), yet ignore the fact that the film is set in AMERICA with American signs, names, & intended locations. Even more risible than the 'lingo fanatics' is the fact that so many of the commentators on the forum have almost no sense of humour at all . Lets see how many of them get triggered about this insight?!

Congrats on your purchase. You sound excited. Thanks for the review. That being said, I simply don't have a desire to watch any movies these days. They are too unrealistic, overpriced and lack in talent. Seems like I've seen them all, even the ones that haven't been filmed yet. $200 for a DVD player? I'm surprised they cost that much anymore. Didn't think people still used disc's for movies? I don't think I know anyone with a DVD player. I thought most people downloaded their movies, whether legal or illegal and then transferred them to flash drive, the cloud, or something like that. Hollywood lost my interest years ago. 6000 cameras trained on one scene so that if things look screwy with one cam, there's 5999 more angles to look at. Actors dont really have to be actors anymore. They only have to remember 5 words per scene, then the cam jiggles around so the viewer can't see just how ignorantly unskilled they are. Yet people pay to keep them all filthy rich while they distort childrens brains. Happy watching

Thanks very much for the comment and enjoying the video. Yes, there's still quite a big community of film lovers out there who still collect DVDs, Blu-Rays, and 4K discs. The last couple years have been great for us collectors with some cool releases. This particular player was the most expensive I've purchased, but I was able to get a good deal for it and had some leftover gift cards to even out the cost. Streaming's OK for some things, but nothing beats a physical copy of a film or TV show in your hands that you can play anytime you want without commercials.
@dsprismg302 ай бұрын
@@tvnash I agree with you regarding discs over flash drives. Its seems as though bits of data gets lost when using a thumb drive, which causes missing areas, loss of quality. I mainly collect music and I've noticed the difference between MP3's vs. Wave and Flac files. Take care my friend.

This is an excellent film, and a testament to Mario Bava's ability to create a near masterpiece with a low budget. He was one of the few directors who knew how to use color cinematography as if it were black & white. I haven't seen all of his films, and I haven't necessarily loved all the ones I have seen. But I think his other color classics are Black Sabbath and Kill Baby, Kill. Blood and Black Lace is also amazing to look at. The scene in Terror in Space where the two astronauts explore the ancient spaceship with the giant is absolutely one of THE best sequences in all of science fiction cinema. There is simply nothing else like it. I first had the Planet of the Vampires release on VHS, then bought the Midnight Movies release, and now I have the Blu-ray from Kino-Lorber, which is really beautiful I've heard very good things about the Italian version. The AIP title Planet of the Vampires is very catchy, but also misleading, as the film has nothing at all to do with vampires!! Great video!
@tvnash4 ай бұрын
Thanks very much friend. The only Mario Bava films I felt were below par so far are Bay of Blood and 5 Dolls for an August Moon. Pretty much anything else he's done and has thrilled me immensely. that artistic flavor of his shines through every time. Terrore Nello Spazio is Top 5 and Top 10 list worthy of his filmography.

Hi Steven, You can always count on a well deserved shout out from Donny (CinemaniacSeventy7) I do have “Beatrice Cenci” & believe it or not I haven’t got around to watching 😬. “The Designated victim” I quite enjoyed, solid movie, “The Bounty killer” was a fine start to Milian’s career in westerns. “The Big Gundown” one of the spaghetti western greats, “Almost human” is my fav from Milian’s movies in the Euro crime genre. Maurizio Merli certainly a fine actor in the Euro crime movies & made his name, but actually I was quite impressed with his late spaghetti western entry “Mannaja a man called Blade” quick on the draw as well as in axe throwing 🤣, real shame it came at the end of the genre, as well as his early passing. Fine video Sir 😎👍

Thanks very much for the comment Carlos, Definitely give Beatrice Cerci a watch when you can, it's a really well made film, one of Fulci's most underrated pieces IMO. There's a couple of tough spots to watch, but overall it's impressive. Tomas Milian gave me a whole new appreciation of the art of acting with his films, such dedication and intensity.
