For a 12 mhz cpu it is very playable:) BTW there are two executable files in the game folder(d286cga and d8088cga), I checked both and I don't see any difference(game looks the same and runs also the same), what is the difference between them?
@DookNookimКүн бұрын
@@greenscreen5994 d8088cga is optimized for 8088 processors and d286cga is optimized for 286 processors. d286cga is smaller, so there's more memory left for the game. In theory, it should be faster. In practice, benchmarking (D286CGA.EXE/D8088CGA.EXE -timedemo demo3) show little difference.

You are using the wrong GPU for this game. Get a Voodoo Banshee and it will run beautifully. I know cuz back in 1998 when I was in college that's what I used. Also why are you using software rendering and not OpenGL? Software rendering sucked back then.
@greenscreen5994Ай бұрын
Back then software renderer may not be impressive but now I really enjoy the look of those big pixels. I remember when shortly after Unreal's premiere I played it on S3Trio 64 card, what an experience it was 😆and Unreal in the 3Dfx version will be in one of the next videos😃

Thats really goddamn slow. My father had a MMX 233mhz. I dont remember the GPU, but I could play it in a at least 640x480 res and a quite good framerate But we used OpenGL
@greenscreen5994Ай бұрын
And this is exactly the difference between software and hardware mode. On the one hand, big pixels and low frame rate, and on the other, smooth textures and high frame rate.I will upload "Unreal" with 3Dfx support soon.

Nice setup! Depending on your motherboard and chipset, lowering your RAM to 64MB will actually improve performance, as most Intel socket 7 chipsets cannot cache more than 64MB of RAM. i430HX can do it, but needs enough cache to be able to do so. As for performance on Quake 2, I think you're in the ballpark of where the system should land. MMX 200 is not especially fast for Quake 2 and Voodoo 1's 4MB VRAM is very limiting. You should see a nice jump in performance by dropping texture quality by one or two factors especially. Give it a try.
@greenscreen59942 ай бұрын
I will definitely do something about it (when I have some free time) I also suspect another reason for the low performance, namely the processor cooling. I use some unbranded low speed fan and maybe that is why the processor overheats and does not work with full efficiency(but i'm guessing here)
@F2bnp2 ай бұрын
@@greenscreen5994 No that can't be the case because neither the CPU or chipset have any such functionality. I think it's only with the Pentium 4 that Intel added such functionality. Not to mention, the MMX 200 barely consumes 12-15 watts, it doesn't really require much beyond the most basic of heatsinks and fans.
@greenscreen59942 ай бұрын
@@F2bnp Today I changed the RAM as you recommended I started with 32MB,then 64MB and even 256MB. The result in Quake 2 (512x384) in each of the above configurations is exactly the same as before, 15.9fps.256mb helped in Unreal, still low frame rate but now there are much less stutters.It is possible that there is something wrong with the 3dfx card, both in Q2 and Unreal there are glitches.

With this configuration it should get 35-40 fps in Quake 2 512x384. Just 15 fps is waaay too low. Try to disable vsync.

Vsync in the game and in the control panel under the 3dfx graphics card tab is disabled. I have the drivers for the card from Philscomputerlab.com so I have no idea why the fps result is so low. Btw you got great channel:)

its because he has the music off. The game has no motivation to render faster like that 😛
@greenscreen5994Ай бұрын
@@De-M-oN It looks like I managed to find the cause of the low frame rate. After removing the Belkin N10117 PCI 5-Port USB Card from the system the frame rate in Quake 2 jumped from 15.9 to 22.3. Other games that previously stuttered (Croc 1, NFS 2SE or Unreal) now run noticeably smoother!

If you can find an NEC V20 CPU, you can pull out the Intel 8088 and put that in its place for a little more performance. The V20 also had an 8080 or maybe Z80 mode. I never installed one for that reason, just the fact that it ran 8088 code faster than an 8088 could.
@greenscreen59944 ай бұрын
Thanks for the suggestions I will definitely do some upgrade in the future, but the first thing will be to add more RAM. 256kb is not much, in this case the easiest solution would be to add a PicoMEM card
@PlumGurly4 ай бұрын
@@greenscreen5994 -- The V20 is a drop-in replacement. It may cause minor side-effects like a faster starting beep (though not most other sounds since they are routed through the system timer and not bit-banged as in the ROM beep) and possibly video artifacts. There is a malformed loop in the ROM to prevent the snow, and the original CPU and graphics boards mask that. Someone can rewrite the ROM to rework that loop and do some general speedup hacks such as removing stray NOPs that serve no purpose. In addition, if one intends on only using the V20 as the CPU and not swap it (or they want to add detection code and separate code paths for 8088 vs. V20), they can edit code that can benefit from the 186, 286, or V20/V30 instructions that it has and the 8088 doesn't have. An example is the block memory copy opcode.
