I’ve been able to get good results from root clipping but it definitely is finicky! If they aren’t placed just right or if they slide out of place it impacts your end results for sure.

That pretty much covers it. I find that gel or mousse tends to make the hair look greasy though. Fine-ish wavy hair looks greasy so easily from any extra product.

I really enjoy your videos and the knowledge you have about wavy hair. I think I have 2a hair. I didn't know I had wavy hair until about 10 months ago and I think I'm the only person who doesn't have frizz at all if it's air dried. I would welcome some frizz because it would add some body to my hair but since learning to scrunch and add a texture foam and diffuse, I do have a little frizz but not too much at all. I've found what works best for me is Suave Volumizing Shampoo, Giovanni Leave-in Conditioner The Doux Mousse Def Texture Foam. After scrunching in the foam, I use a microfiber towel. I also use Suave Flexible hold hairspray as a styling agent and after diffusing. I scrunch & fluff then I brush lightly through it with the Bounce Curl brush so it doesn't look wet. It's the most gentle brush I've ever used. Oh, I have fine low density high porosity hair. I tried to make this comment short but it didn't work out that way. Sorry. 😂

Thank you so much! I have heard others talk about The Doux brand products being awesome so I've had them on my wish list to try to buy for at least a couple of years but I have never got around to it. Maybe I'll have to make it more of a priority to try the foam at least! It's awesome that you've found a routine that you're happy with. No need to apologize for a long comment, I am longwinded myself so I totally get it! <3

I completely agree. Technique and even experiment with the amount of product is way more important than the product. The best thing I ever did was to stop buying products labeled curly or wavy. I do have curl cream that i now only occasionally use on back of head where more dry and frizzy. It helped the dryness a lot to use a bonnet, i put a satin scarf over back of chair and sewed a satin cover for car head rest. Curly girl method was the worst thing i ever did! Well for my hair anyway... it made me feel guilty for having scalp issues and oily roots. Clarifying and hard water shampoos are definitely underrated. I almost feel like not picking up a blow dryer sooner was a mistake for me. Have shoulder issues and didn't think I could hold dryer that long. Bought idk if its tgi, tgif, something its smaller and built in diffuser so easier for me and not as heavy. A lot less frizz

I find it helpful to just take me glasses off before looking in mirror. Instantly fixes all my problems. I actually wore wigs for a while and trying to relearn what works as everything changes with age. Don't have a solution for everything but in the back of my head the hair actually curls and is very dry so far using a heavy curl cream there helps. It's can be difficult to keep it isolated in that spot and takes a bit of trial and error as to how much to use but helps weigh it down a tad so doesn't look so much like a mismatched hair peice.

If you want to get some shorter layers through the middle section I can tell you what I noticed my hair stylist doing. She parted my hair in the center and then went down the length of the part from back to front taking equal size sections from both sides of the part, bringing them straight up in the middle and cutting straight across. Then when you let go of the hair, the sections will fall down on both sides of the part and be equal lengths. I noticed it helped to give my hair more of that rounded shape that looks really good on curly hair.

Thank you! I've often found that saving money often means doing more work on my part, but that's usually an exchange I'm happy to make. Or to make the same point from the other direction, I tend to not feel like it makes sense for my finances to pay double or more just to save a little of my time. But I think it totally makes sense that everyone has to calculate that decision based on their own finances or lifestyle situation. :)

Enjoyed your take on how your haircuts have turned out for your wavy/curly hair. While I am quite a bit older than you - you echo many of my own thoughts and experiences with getting my (also wavy/curly) hair cut. Firstly my hair tends to be dry (found out that is true for most people with curly hair), so I regularly moisten and condition which helps greatly, then I cut it or have it cut while it is dry for best finished results. (My method is a salon cut in reverse as I cut first and wash & condition afterwards). When I cut I find that layering works the best if you want to enhance the waves and have some control over those curls! I would say I spend the most time around the front (top and sides in front of the ears) to shape for the desired look. Like you say - wavy hair is more forgiving for less precise hair cutting. I do go to a salon every so often so they can reshape and give me a more polished look since I realize I am not a trained professional. Thank you for sharing this as I know there are many others on this journey who are likely experiencing some of your same frustrations and challenges with their hair!

@EmilyReviews
@EmilyReviews 2 ай бұрын
Thank you :). This wash day I used Dippity Do curls with curls gelee which is a medium hold. I often do use harder hold products though. Some of my favorites that have a ton of hold are harry's styling gel, the hard hold version of not your mother's curl talk gel (it's only available at ulta unfortunately), or for mousse, not your mothers curl talk mousse. Harry's gel smells like men's bodywash and the scent does stay noticeable well after my hair has dried, so if you're fragrance-sensitive it might not be for you. The mousse advertises itself as a touchable hold which is WILD because it has more hold than some hard-hold gels that I've tried! So it has great hold and gives me results that look great, but it leaves my hair feeling gritty so some people hate it for that reason. All just depends on what you want to prioritize the most, I think. :)

After doing the cut, you noticed that you wanted more layers in the mid to lower part. To get your desired effect, you should lower your pigtail sections (your initial pigtails where set a little higher than what you needed).

I did this cut a few times and really liked it, but then eventually the layers in the back of my hair became too short for the layers in front when I kept doing this method. After doing it for a while, I had to have the back layered by a professional. The reason I started cutting my own hair was that I have trouble getting haircuts I like from professionals. It’s definitely a problem!

@Dogandcatmom51 4 ай бұрын
@@wavyhaircareblog964 , I didn’t section out the bangs because I wanted my bangs to grow a bit, but I did cut the perimeter the way she did in her pigtail video. When I went to the professional stylist to fix it, she told me my hair looked really good actually, and she’s someone who had cut my hair before I did the pigtail cut also. She just had to fix it a bit, but she liked the overall shape on me. My hair is above the shoulders though.

I don’t follow the curly girl method. Tbh I usually heat style my naturally curly hair and I use silicones. The only way for my hair to look good curly would be for me to plop because it’s long and easily weighed down if it dries right side up. But only the front and top ever looked good; the back never came out right- I would get the rats nest. I found the video on your blog. I tried your method of making the parting at the ears and making sure I was upside down and not just leaning when scrunching and plopping. I used no products, just shampoo and conditioner and plopped for several hours in a turbie twist, took my still damp hair down a few hours later by making sure to use my hands and fingers in the back of my head to lift my hair up off my scalp while flipping it right side up and gently shaking it out and let me tell you my hair has never looked better! 😍 the volume! The definition! The juicy curl clumps in all the right places! The curls started higher up the hair strand and I had so much definition from plopping and best of all NO MORE RATS NEST!! You are a fountain of wisdom and deserve a Major Award for this information. Bless you for this. I may start wearing my hair curly more often… Now if only I knew how to detangle my curly hair every day without having to completely re-wet it. No matter how I sleep, my hair will become a rats nest if I don’t detangle it every day and re-soaking my hair every day is not the business. Leaving detangling for my once or twice weekly wash day is also not the business- I get such bad knots by the time wash day comes that I end up snapping my hair trying to detangle it in the shower, even with silicone laden conditioner. I figured that blowouts were less damaging than trying to detangle it and when my hair is straight, I can brush and detangle it every day with no problem and I don’t have to re-soak my hair every day to do it. So if you have any tips on how to detangle daily without re-soaking that would be great.

Aww, thank you so much for all the kind words! I'm glad you found this helpful. It seems like some hair types are a lot more prone to tangling than others, and I have hair that just doesn't seem to tangle hardly at all. I think when you see advice that says to just not detangle between washes, it's coming from people who have hair that just doesn't tangle all that much, like myself. For people who have hair that tangles really easily, it makes sense that just not detangling between washes may not be realistic! I have seen some people say that clarifying their hair more often helps reduce tangles, others have said that using more moisturizing products and less protein containing products help reduce tangles. I've seen people say that their hair tangles in a few spots more than others (such as the lower hairline where it meets the neck and they have those 'baby hairs') and so they use more leave in condition in those areas to make those sections easier to detangle. For some people their hair tangles a lot more if they have chemical or heat damage, so if they stop using heat tools or dyeing their hair then once their hair grows out it'll tangle less. Sleeping with their hair in a bonnet or satin-lined cap helps for some. Those are all that are coming to mind for me at the moment. But I know that some find that no matter what they do, even if they're super cautious with how gentle they are on their hair and give it lots of moisture and stuff, it still just tangles super duper easily. So, I can see how you or others might feel like detangling regularly is really your only option. I have read that for wavy hair, there has been some research done that has suggested that it isn't as damaging to brush or detangle wavy hair dry as it is for curly hair, which people say to only ever brush/detangle wet. So if you have wavy hair and haven't experimented with dry detangling, you could see if that works any better for you or saves you any time.

What are your thoughts on the Pinwheel Haircut? Both Paul Watts and Manes by Mel have a Pinwheel Haircut that seems interesting to me, but I haven't gotten any further than the sectioning part. I chicken out at that point. Paul Watts starts cutting with that back section, and I can't seem to get comfortable with the angulation and elevation on that difficult to reach back section for a DIY haircut. Manes by Mel sections a little differently, focuses on refreshing the layers only, but the same idea. She also elevates and angulates some of the sections as she moves around the pinwheel, similar to Paul Watts. Just wondering if you had contemplated that DIY Haircut and your thoughts.
