I'm a true novice....but if strings are attached to the pins, it doesn't mean the same pin in the same location over and over again? There's gotta be a better way. Maybe more efficient(power used) machines ? The USBC hasn't made the best decisions in the past. Personally, I see pure doom from this.

If they want to save money, why not use the pin setting system used in the old bowling games they had in bars years ago. You rolled the ball, or slid the puck, and the pins would flip up and out of the way. I used to bowl 3 nights a week and owned 2 bowling balls. I averaged about 180 and the best I shot was 250 and never shot a 700 series. We had beer frames, and at least one drink per game. Then bowling alleys went from the cheapest place in town to drink, to being the the most expensive place to buy a drink. Then the ABC changed the oil pattern allowed, and area bowling began. No skill involved in shooting a 300 game or even an 800 series. A 200 average was tough to obtain. Now guys average 275 or better. I've seen guys shoot 800 and not win a single jackpot. Shoot 800 and not make a single spare for the night. The house puts out what used to be an illegal shot, but the bowlers love it with their inflated scores. Since I quit bowling, guys I bowled with who average about 165, now are over 200 and have shot 300 games. Before area bowling, a great game was 200, and a 600 was almost impossible for them. In bowling, two things can cause the pins to fall. The ball or other pins. Now the strings or wires can cause the pins to fall as well. Why stop there. Why can't I pay some guy to sit in the back with a stick and knock down the pins ?

The USBC doing a report on String Setter's is like the NFL doing a report on concussions. The SIMPLE fix to nearly all of this controversy is simply have bowlers carry two yearbook averages, and let people bowl in what houses and what events they want, or is better suited to their game. This movement to say that string and free fall setters are equal is ridiculous on it's face.

These are a BAD idea. It's not like a computerized counting system or automation, it messes with the core principle physics of the game. It totally effects how the pins interact. They dont travel normally after being hit. They can't tumble, topple or roll properly. If you watch up close footage, you can see the strings hitting and wrapping around each other causing them to move without the actual pins touching. Theres absolutely no benefit to string pins other than it's cheaper for the house.

they can try as hard as they want to make string pins similar to freefall, but it will never be the same. and they are completely missing the point that stringpins are just not satisfying to bowl on, and just FEELS wrong. Which is the factor they cant try to replicate. just look at those goofy things float back up on their string, its just silly. Yesterday the bowling alley where i play league at, announced that they will be switching out their 8 year old 82-90 edge pinsetters (which are already coping with problems, most likely due to poor maintenance) with stringpins. All the arguments that were made to us as to why it is better, don't apply to bowlers. for example, less maintenance and less power usage. But those are arguments for a proprietor, not a bowler. You can never create the feeling of freefall pins with strings. This video only shows to me that they tried to make stringpins not completely god awful by actually putting some r&d in. but these graphs still give me the feeling of "eh good enough". For real bowlers a 7% less strike difference because there are strings attached is just sad.

They can do all the testing they want, this is ruining bowling for house profits.

Last week in league, I had what looked like a flush pocket shot, the 5 pin spun like a top, straight upright and while spinning, moved right over into the 10 pin spot. It was the most incredible thing any of us in league have ever seen. Absolutely crazy.

If that doesn't count as a strike then surely a ball that goes in the gutter and then somehow manages to hit a pin and knock it over on the way through has to count as a score.

@@CatDaddySteve right. And which type generates more revenue for lanes? The guy that goes 2x a week, or the guy that goes 4x a year? We are more important to their survival than rec bowlers and it’s time they started acting like it

lBrilliant. Simple, subtle and it can work. I've been using part of this, but now I will try shortening up my target when I start on the fresh as I now understand what is happening. By the 2nd & 4rd game I have to target further down the lane, but I hadn't thought about shortening up at the beginning. Thank you.
