On Linux (debian bookworm) the moment I try to do exactly that and I connect the second point of NEC source to P2 the name NecSrc1 gets red and I get a straight line on th esmith chart. From then on it will not produce a NEC chart. No matter what. This is on x64. I can go and execute nec2c executable for ubuntu and it works, but simnec can't for some reason. This is the latest version with no JRE (I already have JRE 17 installed). WhenI expand the errors field I get "Missing NECUnits statement <2 times"

Hi Ward, I was following along and building the dipole just as in your example. At about 05:30 you directly connected port 2. I did all the same steps but after I made that connections the X values did not change, as it changed on yours. Is there a special key to hit that makes it run (it stayed at R=50 and X = 0) ? Everything looked like yours except the impedances are not calculating. 73, KM5L

There are many examples of circuits in the .SimNEC directory in your home directory. Something like $HOME/.SimNEC/2/1/Examples will get you there. There are several EFHW examples in there. Look to AC6LA subdirectory.

i'm trying to learn of how to apply what you see in the Smith Chart to an actual antenna system- and just need some help knowing when to use a section of coax to duplicate the capacitance needed, especially how to add these in parallel. Do you have any videos that teach these principles? of when and how to add different inductance and capacitance

In this video I use SimSmith to calculate the feed point impedance of an antenna. Having this, I can analyze the feed network and determine the power losses. I can also optimize the circuit to achieve other goals such as efficiency or bandwidth.

Great video, thanks. I wanted to ask why there is no Z block anymore, in recent versions of SimNEC at least? I think I achieved the same by using "meas = file[]; Thev(Conj(meas));" to add the impedance of my generator that I measured with my VNA. My goal was to know how much power at what frequencies gets transferred from my antenna/receiver combination. I measured both (the receiver directly at its input, the antenna at the end of its feed line that connects directly at the receiver's input) with the VNA, and assigned the csv of the antenna measurement to the load, the csv of my receiver to the generator as mentioned above. Is that a valid way to do that? At least I do see power being largest where the two impedance measurements coincide visually. (In reality load and generator are reversed, but I think that does not matter because of antenna reciprocity.)

There are no videos that simply explain "feed point impedance", and show what they mean. I see a lot of questions on this on the extra test. I don't know what it means. I think a ham should make a video about it, and show their work. I do not know what what your drawings are. Many of these hams that make these videos assume their audience is composed of seasoned experts.

Hi Ward, Thanks for both the video 's and for SimSmith. Here's how to find the angle for the 2 12th wave transmission lines: ************************************************************************ //12th wave Rad = Atan(1/Sqrt( (T1.Zo/T2.Zo) + (T2.Zo/T1.Zo) +1 ) ); Deg = Atan(1/Sqrt( (T1.Zo/T2.Zo) + (T2.Zo/T1.Zo) +1 ) ) * 180/Pi; L.johms = 0; T1.Zo = G.Zo; T2.Zo = L.ohms; //T1.@MHz = G.Mhz; //T2.@MHz = G.Mhz; //T1.~deg = Deg; //T2.~deg = Deg; ************************************************************************ It's possible to change the degrees by hand and get the correct lengths. Could you tell how to automate the last 4 variables in SimSmith ? Tough Simsmith suggests ~Mhz and @deg , it doesn't seem to like them. This would automatically calculate the lengths by Gen frequency. Greets Pauluzs

After a quick glance it looks like this method could be used to subtract test jig effects and for 2 port single path VNAs (like the NanoVNA) the effects of port2 and cables or adapters used to connect from calibration plane to port2?
@ae6ty3 жыл бұрын
The video and the 'correct' block does not support a 'Through' measurement. I've been thinking about doing that as well. BUT.... devices like the nanoVNA generally already have the ability to do custom calibration for things like test fixtures. Also (shameless self promotion), SimSmith's "nanoVNA Connect" does provide for full custom calibration.
@galileo_rs3 жыл бұрын
@@ae6ty That is more or less correct but there are some issues. For example, I have a set of characterized standards that I can use to calibrate my Nano at the end of a cable, as soon as I connect a test jig to it I'm measuring the test jig and the DUT combined. Now I can create a set of "standards" for the jig and use that, as is commonly done, but that presumes the "standards" that I made are ideal and that leads to issues. In theory I can use the first set of standards to characterize the second set, including the jig, but I failed at it and need to do a bit more research on how to do it properly. Kurt Poulsen shared his method via VNWA software so that is the next thing on my TODO list. Since the Nano is a single path device (can't measure S22 and S12) I cant use the "Y21 method" to remove the parasitics. Additionally it makes a significant difference how the test jig is connected to port2. For example when measuring high impedance, using the S21 method, best results are obtained when the test jig is connected directly to port 2 and not via a cable, as is commonly done. This should have probably been posted to SimSmith mailing list I guess?
@ae6ty3 жыл бұрын
@@galileo_rs Yes, this would be better on the SimSmith groups.io forum. I've been playing around with the idea of allowing an impedance file to specify a 'reference'. Doing so would allow references other than 'Short', 'Open', and 'Load'... they could be 'load1', 'load2', and 'load3'. The math is the same. I've not thought much about what 'through' would need, nor just how different the three 'loads' would need to be to provide high quality answers. This would allow you do characterize your custom 'standards' and then characterize your test fixture using the custom standards. I'm still in the dark about how to deal with the 'through'.....
@galileo_rs3 жыл бұрын
@@ae6ty I always try to use the "zero length through" by connecting directly to second port but when that is not possible the NanoVNA Saver patches for "enhanced response calculation" appear to help. If memory serves me well I believe that I shared the link for that in SimSmith group. It is not perfect as it makes some assumptions about the through used. I will post a message on Groups forum.
