I haven't had the best of luck with mine, either. But, a couple of times that I've used it, the coax has been at fault. When I've used good coax, I've gotten out. I set mine up the same way that you do. It seems to work better for me on the higher frequencies, as others have mentioned.
@zl2neb3 сағат бұрын
That’s a good suggestion. I hadn’t considered the coax and I’ve been using the same coax every time that I’ve used it. I would expect the antenna to be better on higher frequencies as you suggest although I know that others have had good success with this antenna (although to be honest I’m not entirely sure what band they are operating on so it’s possible that they are also on something like 20m or higher).

JPAC 12 is a good antenna if you need a vertical that can fit into a backpack. I travel with mine on planes and have successful POTA activations with it often. I did add my own ground plane wires to it. Here's my video of it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/b6e9fneebJV7eas

Nick, I've done 500 + Pota contacts on the JPC-12 in the few weeks and ordered a second one I'm so pleased with it, and had no issues using it with the G90 (the only radio I use). Search "jpc-12 cheat sheet" to see the tried and tested configurations. Your setup looks the same as I have mine setup. I did find when I used longer radials I had to shorten the telescopic mast a few inches. You can also swap the standard telescopic mast for a 5.6m one so it tunes better on 40m. Not teaching you to suck eggs but have you done a continuity test to make sure the centre of your coax is connected to the driven element? There was one post I read where the wire wasn't soldered to the SO239. I assume you have tested the TX output power of the G90? Hope you get it sorted. One more thought, I managed to hit the Antarctic on 100mw using WSPR from the UK, do you have a WSPR TX to test? Bob G6CKK
@zl3pwmКүн бұрын
Hi Nick. The radials best as a raised counterpoise above ground. Also it’s vertical, not suited for short to medium distance. More likely effective on higher frequencies over longer distances.
@zl2nebКүн бұрын
Thanks Peter, Yes I’ll need to try a different configuration and I should have expected that the vertical would have quite a different pattern of radiation. I had been spoilt a little with the success using the 10m mast in a vertical configuration. Really I was after something a little more portable and I recorded this video about 10 weeks ago - it’s just come through the schedule now. ZL3CC and I recently completed a JPC-12 - JPC-12 QSO which was an entertaining experiment but ultimately successful.

Hi Nick, thanks for video, I have a JPC-12 and have made contacts with it, it performs quite well with my tests, but not as good as a dipole or long wire antenna. You can use it with the coil mid or bottom mounted so some testing to do to see what works best. Regards Nigel ZL2SEA
@zl2nebКүн бұрын
Thanks Nigel - yes I’ve heard from others that they work quite well I suppose really it’s all a bit of a compromise. I was really after something that was a little more portable for taking easily on the motorbike and this seemed like a reasonable option.

@@zl2neb Hi Nick, suggest you take a coax switch and the JPC-12 plus your wire antenna, then switch between antennas getting signal reports from both antennas and then you will have a direct comparison. Would be a good test. Cheers 73 Nigel

Nigel - it’s as if you already know what next week’s video is about (although I didn’t take the switch which would have been the sensible thing to do). 😂 I did these ones about 10 weeks ago now so the problem I’m going to have is that people will be frustrated when they see that I don’t follow their good suggestions. Initially I wanted to have a bit of a buffer so that I could continue to release a video every week even if I had been unable to do an activation. Things have got a little out of hand so I need these scheduled ones to play out while I sort out a more practical system.

You may have it set up wrong. The connector should be directly under the coil - not seperated by the extensions - and the whip on top of the coil. The extensions are to raise it off of the ground if needed ? I have a much more basic version of just ground spike, connector and whip And it works well with my G90. Radials help greatly - I use a faraday cloth as a groundplane. 73 and keep trying.
@zl2nebКүн бұрын
Thanks John - yes possibly there is a better way to set it up. I just followed the instructions in the booklet that came with the antenna. Certainly having the coil closer to the bottom would probably help in the wind that we seem to get here. I have heard of people using faraday cloth, I’ll try and find some and see if how that works instead. Of course I am operating on 40m so it’s possibly asking quite a bit from such a short antenna. 73’s and thanks for the suggestions.
@zl4de063 күн бұрын
Hi Nick, could you please share the links to your mast and antenna used here. Thanks
@zl2neb2 күн бұрын
Sure no problem. The mast in the video is actually a haverford one (haverford.com.au/collections/telescopic-squid-poles/products/10m-telescopic-squid-pole?variant=12702562746481) - they used to ship to NZ but they don’t do so anymore. A close equivalent mast that you can get locally is from maintrac (www.maintracgroup.com/products/telescopic-pole-kit-9-2m?_pos=3&_sid=aa4994113&_ss=r) I have one - its a more robust construction than the haverford one. Other alternatives worth considering are the masts by sotabeams (I have a 7m heavy duty one that you see me more recently when I take the motorbike - it is very good and very sturdy) or a DX commander mast (I have no personal experience with these). I do have a video where I show the difference between the haverford mast and the maintrac one. The antenna is just a 25.6m length of wire (this from sotabeams www.sotabeams.co.uk/antenna-wire-lightweight-100m/ and a 9:1 unun that I built using a ft140-43 toroid, some magnet wire and a jiffy case www.jaycar.co.nz/jiffy-box-clear-83-x-54-x-31mm/p/HB6005 I use the same unun with whatever random length of antenna wire that I decide to use (usually the longest that will fit in the area). I carry sizes that are around 10m, 12m, 17m, 26m and just recently 36m then I use a configuration that fits the site like an inverted V or inverted L or if its a really tight space I use the 10m wire wrapped around the mast like a vertical. For any of these I use a 10m counterpoise. Perhaps I should do a video on this sometime. I guess I sort of thought that people may have seen it enough to not really mention it plus a little bit of what I have is covered in the “what’s in the bag” video although I’ve never gone into the unun construction as there are plenty of other quite good videos on how to build those. The only other component that I have for the entire thing is a choke that I also built into a jiffy case. I’m pretty sure it uses a type 30 toroid and the coax I use for that is RG174 as it will handle the power and I can get a useful amount of windings within a small space. Let me know if you would find it useful for more details on this stuff and I’ll sort something out or alternatively send me an email and I can send you some pictures and find the instructions that I used. Cheers - Nick

Wicked, thanks for the reply and all the good info. I do recall seeing some of your setup/gear videos, tend to forget the important notes hi hi! Slowly building a kit here, I might try the 7m sotabeams one, they seem slightly cheaper than the Dx commander ones, suppose I could try one of each keep old Callum happy. I need hurry up and get out and do some activations before Matt ZL4NVW steals all the inactivated locations... Keep up the good work, enjoy your videos regardless of the content.
@zl2neb2 күн бұрын
No problem - I sort of gloss over the mechanics of putting up the antenna so I should probably do something specifically about that at some point. The other one that you could consider is buying one of the spiderbeam masts shop.spiderbeam.com/en/shop/10m-fiberglass-pole-with-eyelet-2197 They may be a competitive option price wise. With all of these things it’s usually the freight that makes a significant difference to the total cost. The one I got from maintrac is pretty solid - it’s designed for attaching a bird scarer and is certainly more rigid than the haverford one that I used in the weekend. The 7m sotabeams one also seems very robust. Let me know what you decide to get - you’ll need to be quick if you want to beat Matt on new activations - between him and ZL3RIK they have pretty much covered everything!

Most of my activations are around 7.085MHz - certainly they are all in the 40m band which is where I need to operate in order to get NZ chasers in the morning. If I go to a higher band I’m more likely to get Australia but as they are 2 hours behind me they possibly aren’t operating yet. Europe or USA could be a bit of a challenge unless I wait until later in the day. Like everything, it’s all a bit of a compromise.

@zl2neb thanks, it's tough being at the world's bottom.lol. Is there much activity in the 2mtr 70cm bands here in NZed?? I'm looking to get into HAM radio but not sure what bands to start out on.. cheers
@zl2neb25 күн бұрын
Yeah it’s not always easy being down here and also in a completely different time zone (although we are in the future). Activity on 2m and 70cm is very dependent on the region. I know that there is quite a bit of activity in Christchurch on these bands (mainly on the repeaters) and also Nelson has an increased amount of traffic going on as well. Over here in Marlborough it’s pretty quiet so I wouldn’t personally try to activate anything here on those bands (well not if I wanted to be successful). Other places you may find that you can get quite a bit of activity. If you are wanting to get your license then there are some initial band restrictions for the first 3 months. Basically you are limited to 80m (which is a bit of a challenge with antennas) and anything above 10m (10m is absolutely humming at the moment and this is where I would be if I was interested in HF and wanting to make some contacts into Australia etc.). What part of the country and you in?

No - I’m based in Blenheim so not that far away. I have 2 transmitting loops that you may have seen. One is the octagonal one that you may have noticed in the background of some of the videos. The other is larger which I put up from time to time and is in the video where I try to join the hf net one evening on 80m using the loop. Let’s just say that all of the construction (especially the one I use on 80m) is “very basic”! There is also a receive loop that is more recent and which uses an amplifier from minikits.com.au. It’s been very good and made an impressive difference on reducing local noise. When you talk about getting a good match are you having problems getting an acceptable SWR? I’ve certainly had to experiment a bit to come up with a solution that works here.

@k6kwiАй бұрын
Hi Nick, another good video… question, what bands are you making these contacts around NZ on? Thx
@zl2nebАй бұрын
That's a great question. In NZ it's almost exclusively the 40m band. There are a couple of reasons for this. The majority of NZ activators that I'm aware of operate in the morning as they don't want to be in the parks in the evening. Because NZ morning is usually pretty late at night for the rest of the world we are pretty dependent on NZ chasers. If we swap to 20m or some other higher band then we pretty much lose all the NZ chasers and are then dependent on other countries to make the contacts. If I'm also using lower power then that's going to be a struggle. I have made contacts on 10m but that's only been Australia. In the summer it would be possible to operate in the evening depending on how remote the park is but we do have a few unique challenges with this. Plus our amateur radio operator numbers are also pretty small unlike the US or Europe where I've had a completely different experience. The small number of NZ operators is also why we tend to use SSB and not CW as the number of CW operators is even smaller here! What bands do you generally find people using for POTA?
@k6kwiАй бұрын
Another great video, thank you! I was wondering about traveling with batteries in NZ, so thanks for answering that question. That’s sub 100 wh standard seems pretty universal.
@zl2nebАй бұрын
Thanks - I'm pleased that it was useful. I know that I could take a larger battery than the 6 or 7 Ah ones that I use but I don't really need it with the G90 plus I'd rather be under the limit by a reasonable amount to avoid any issues. The battery that I took this time I've also taken to Europe with no problems. Are you planning some activations here?

Welcome to the club! I hope that you really enjoy using it. It does have some quirks but its been very reliable for me and once you get used to it I think that you will find it fun to use.

He really is, we met a few times at club meetings in ChCh and stay in touch via Email. I’ve worked him a few times on FT-8. Keep up the great content!
