NOT SAYING ANYTHING ORIGINAL HERE, but this sure proves that less---much much much less---is far far more! Show too much too long and it all falls apart and becomes a charade.

Being a young boy in the 70's I absolutely loved this movie. I'm 59 now. It's a hidden gem and Bruce Dern did a phenomenal job of making the audience feel the sense of isolation and responsibility to mankind in the film.

Other then the scenes of the Director's Cut... I see very little in the way of new footage. It's like watching a condensed version of Aliens on fast-forward. Not impressed in the slightest.

What suggestions do you have for a young man to become director of photography? Never did it occur that a young lady might ever want to do it...

The thing I could never understand though was the dead aliens' logic: Rather than warn anyone in the spatial vicinity with a repeating radio signal, doesn't it simply make more sense to just go dark? It was a minor lifeless planetoid in some remote solar system way off any beaten interstellar path. Odds are excellent that the ruined ship with the other alien eggs on it would just sit there undiscovered forever. Why attract attention -- especially when any passing vessels from other beings would likely not be able to understand or decipher the message?

I don't who did this but it's like a Coles Notes Version and really badly duct taped together. Not "Restructured" ... recycled from chopped parts hacked together

The message of the movie shaped me as a teen (I was eleven when I saw it in 1973). That humanity had given up on the forests.

I thought the pilot in the beginning was Adam Sandler.... I wish, there was a sequel. I know the story continued in the comic, and a sequel in the video game, but we need another movie..

An excellent science fiction story with a theme right for then and now. Also a well made film that does not seem dated. I have it on DVD for anytime I feel the desire for a simple but honest sci-fi story.

The reality of this movie is amazing. A government program to save what little is left of Nature with an enomous effort. Then someone comes along and desides, “Nah, we need to cut the budget so lets just chuck it all!” Yep, just like modern times.

p.s. One of my favourite scenes in the movie is when Bruce Dern programs the drones to play poker, so that he has someone to play with! (And midway through the game, the drones start whispering to each other behind his back! _"New rule! No talking among yourselves!"_ 🤣)

I got to meet Bruce Dern at a convention some years ago (autographing stills from this movie among other things) and he said this was one of his favourite film roles. Not only because it dealt with an important theme, but also because it was one of the few film-roles he had where he _didn't_ play a villain. (Prior to this he was known as The Man Who Shot John Wayne & got a lot of hate-mail because of it.) I remember when I first saw the film as a kid & thought it was so cool. My favourite elements in the movie (and I had a lot of favourites) was definitely the drones, though. It really is remarkable how you can feel a connection for the characters...and they don't even speak! Remarkable piece of filmmaking, and it proves you don't need a gazillion dollar budget with a lot of fancy, tricked-out CGI clutter in order to get a really good movie.

What a Great 'Post'!!!👍👍👍👍👍 I'm a BIG Sci-Fi fan.... 'Aliens' 'Moonraker' 'Star Wars' 'Star Trek' 'Star Blazers', and so on... I Think I first saw this film on TV, (don't remember when) but was SO interested in " A bird A " the American Airlines logo and seeing the robots move ( Always thought that they were real ). Then as grew "wiser", found out that the robots were actors inside, but didn't quite figure out How they got inside there ( although by then I researched that they were amputees...but HOW did they get inside. Overall, 'Silent Running' is one of my favorites, right next to my 'Andromeda Strain', 'War of the Worlds' (original), 'When Worlds Collide', and so on. Felt bad for 'Louie'...., But LOVE the Domes and how they were produced!!

Same here; I totally lose it at the end of the movie. (Even just hearing Joan Baez singing the songs usually get the tears flowing for me.) In the years since, I've often wondered if the movie "Wall-E" was influenced by this movie to some degree, as it does have some parallels.

The problem with Americans culture is that white culture in America gives you theatrical fantasy as a art form where black American culture gives you a natural energy art form that can not be resistant so the original man the copper color people of ancient earth gives you nature the artificial man give you a false narratives and a illusion of reality called theatre so what are we people of the planet following truth or illusion think people
