Petrification stops anything that needs to 'activate' to trigger. All the words still exist on the target card, so things like barrier/deflect and permanents are still live. It mainly hinders on swing auto effects and activate main. The nice thing about petrification is that it doesn't allow an opponent to trigger a pending auto (usually swing effects ).
