I kwas in the navy when this song became popular. I didn't;t know what the words meant, however it mirrored my extreme sadness. a long way from family, still it was therapeutic. to this day it still brings back sadness and hope.

The truth about this is in 1969 when this was on the flip side of "I Want You Back" no one cared. They didn't want to hear that bluesy sounding song. Black people were running away from the Blues claiming that it was old slavery music. But I had Big Boy, by the Jackson 5 on steel town records. And I bought I want you back, as well and I must admit that I loved Who's Loving you, way more because it was the flip side of Shop Around that I also had. So trust me I was truly impressed.
