Such a lovely summary Stacey. I actually like how you stutter and go all over the place while speaking. It felt like I was actually listening to you in real life, all felt really natural.

Love your reading group. I came here looking for analysis about this book because I've been obsessed with it since I finished it, and I wish I had a group like yours to talk about it. Loved hearing your thoughts

SPOILER I think it does not matter whether Kay killed herself or if it was an accident. It was the abusive relationship with her husband that killed her. That relationship eroded her and diminished her character throughout the book so she became a shadow of what she was portrayed at the beginning of the book. Either if she decided to killed herself after that abusive relationship, or if she fell after becoming obsessed with war planes (because she and Harald weaponized the US going to war against each other), it was all Harald's fault in the end. And I feel that Harald's actions at her funeral kind of portray this conclusion in the author's mind.

I've read several of Nora Ephron's books, Heartburn being just one of them. I'll preface this saying; I love Nora Ephron's humor. I love her style of writing because she rights exactly the same way she would have a conversation with her reader. Her belief that "everything is copy" shines through in Heartburn which she says is based on her marriage (and ultimately her divorce) from Washington Post writer Carl Berstein of Watergate fame and his infidelity to her while being pregnant with their second child. It is the perfect example of taking a horrible, painful situation and turning it into a good read with all of the names changed to protect her from lawsuits. Speaking of which, Bernstein had the gall to insist that she make changes to the book and the movie to make him look like less of a schmuck. Sorry Carl, you're a schmuck. Her final documentary film, "Everything is Copy" directed by her son Jason Berstein exposes the truth about his parents less than amicable divorce-much to his father's chagrin. It honestly makes me sad that out of the two of them, Nora is the one who's life was cut short by cancer.

The Bloomsbury Set were a small group of precious, self-important snobs who wrote about and for a very select privileged group in London. The working classes were looked on with paternalistic contempt - typical middle class liberals that would, unfortunately, come to control the British Labour Party.
@sarahsnowe10 ай бұрын
All true, but they were products of their class. One is highly unlikely to be able to see beyond its mores and even less likely to repudiate it. However, works such as A Room of One's Own have inspired women of all classes to claim agency. Also, their being snobs doesn't invalidate their artistic achievements, which were achieved because they had education and leisure.

Intelligent writing (setting, stories, style -the name of the novel was chosen with a milimétricas precision and intentions-), great pacing… a roller coaster. As a non-American my points of views and highlights differ from most Americans (as far as I can tell by watching several reviews of this book on KZbin). Is interesting to hear others seeking for a clue on issues perhaps I find trivial; and the opposite. Great novel, great characters, great portrait of a troubled (apparently average and normal) family on a given moment of the US history. Great start for a trilogy.

There is a substantial reading community (Booktube) here on KZbin - and there will be some people who would love to know about your book clubs and what you are doing. The standard "calling card" is to do a Booktube Newbie Tag. If you type that 3 word phrase into KZbin, you will see those introductory videos by other reader/presenters. There are standard questions to answer, to introduce yourself. Do give it a go, I think it will increase your channel's reach.
