Lateness: It's not encouraged, but it is cultural that lateness is not unusual. Many of the cultures that have brought Orthodoxy to the US are less concerned with punctuality, some even finding truly on time to be rude for purely social calls, though showing up in a more timely manner for church would be encouraged. Personally, I'm an American convert, but I learned a lot about the cultures from my grandma when I was growing up. Art: The style is done that way very intentionally. Choir vs Congregation: Some churches have congregational singing; others don't tend to practice it. You are (most likely) welcome to sing along with the Choir parts, but there is no pressure. Doctrine: There's too much to divulge on just a simple website. There's usually a class for inquirers and catechumens to learn more about the faith. It is also very much a lived and practiced faith, not just some information to learn and memorize. (The language and dance classes are almost certainly open to anyone; only the eucharist is reserved for members.) Saint: It was recently the feast or commemoration day for Saint Dionysios of Zakynthos. There is a saint celebrated almost every day of the year. Language: Different parishes may present in different languages. It can vary even within jurisdiction. I also attend a Greek Orthodox church, but most of our parish is young families and mostly converts. Our service is presented primarily in English, with many portions repeated in Greek, but the service is primarily English. OCA (Orthodox Church in America) is usually in English.

Very nice that you are searching. I am greek orthodox and I am still searching God because in orthodoxy there are no certainties. You will never know if you are saved or not, you just have to fight with yourselves and keep going. St. Dionysios of Zakynthos (+17.12) you showed us, died around 1622 and his body is intact. It can be found in Zakynthos island in Greece and it is worshipped like any other relic. From time to time, they change his clothes because they melt. There are in Greece 4 or 5 more saint bodies that time did not touch them. The oldest is of St. Spyridon in Corfu island. In all orthodox churches old generations participate mainly in ceremonies. It is something that I don΄t like. I am 38 and the situation is like this. I have visited many orthodox churches in Greece and abroad.

So what I really find interesting is in this video is the comparison to the other two videos you made on different churches this one was 10 minutes longer. You had no background music, there was no text on the screen and It felt less like a video and more like a ramble your energy is visibly different. You critiqued this church way more for example you really highlighted how the priest wasn’t a strong orator but gave almost 0 attention to the “handsome” mega church pastor explicitly contradicting the Bible in that God isn’t a judgmental God. You filmed this a whole month after and honestly I feel you judge this church on a different basis.

Having been raised in the Orthodox faith overseas our services were just in Greek. Now that I have returned home after being away for over 30 years and hearing part of the service in English I personally prefer it in Greek because that it was I am used to. But I do understand for second generation people English needs to be used so that the faithful understand the liturgy. In my country they did it to encourage the younger generation to come to church but unfortunately it hasn't worked. Last night at the 'εσπερινό' we had 18 attendees, even less than last year in a town with over 3500 Orthodox followers. It is very sad indeed and my dad at 95 says it will go back to how it was in the 30-40's when a priest from overseas would come over for a weekend or a week and they would have weddings and christenings one after the other. Not sure what happened with funerals. By the time he arrived there was already a priest but no church. They used an Anglican one until they built their own.

That has got to be one of the most appalling things I have ever heard of. Absolutely 180° opposite of the Gospel. I don't think any of those people at that place would recognize Jesus if he showed up and started kicking the pews over and whipping people.

Regarding your question at the 17 minute. There is an Orthodox Calendar and each day we have a few saints celebrated. Some are marked with a black cross, some with a red one. Those are the major ones and also the major holidays are marked with a red. I love your fairness in sharing your story, attending a few more Liturgies will surely benefit you. Orthodoxy is way deeper than many other belief systems and one can go a step deeper with each visit. All the best from Romania, may Christ bless your heart and soul. Merry Christmas!

You should check the history of Orthodoxy; it was always there; the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. The term Greek Orthodox” was given by the Franks of Charlemagne. Those who excommunicated were the Franks of Rome from the Romand of Constantinople.

As a recent convert from Protestant non denominational to Eastern Orthodox, All I have to say is that Orthodox Christianity is like the pearl hidden in the field to which everything is sold to obtain (referencing Jesus’ parable from the Gospels) It feels as though I’ve landed on an entirely new continent and am stepping hundreds or even thousands of years back into the historical traditions of the Christian Faith. This is just my testimony though, the real joy is in discovering this beauty inside of your own heart! I wish you well on your journey🙏🏼☦️❤️

It is a trait of the protestants to over emphasize the sermon to the efacement of the Eucharist. Some sermons last an hour. Sermons were never lengthy in either Roman Catholic church or in the Orthodox church. The better name for sermon is homily. A homily is simply highlighting the lessons heard today from the epistle & gospel. Protestants invented the long sermons to fill up time that used to be devoted to the Eucharistic in the second half of the Divine Liturgy/mass.

Careful. Orthodoxy preaches salvation through faith plus works. This is a false Gospel which Paul strongly condemns in his letter to the Galatians.

Regarding the slim number of people at the beginning, you probably came during the matins which is a service right before the Divine Liturgy. Often people will not attend the matins and only go to the divine liturgy. Of course this isn't good nor traditional but it offers an explanation to why there were so few people.

About preaching. Orthodoxy assuming some homework. If you want to know all points of orthodox faith without biases you should read Holy Fathers and acknowledged orthodox theologians. Preaching after liturgy are common guidances usually without deep diving in high lmatters.

I wouldn’t recommend more the Antiochian Orthodox Church, they are particularly more convert friendly, in fact 75% of the priests are converts, allot of them came from a movement of people from Crusade for Christ in the 60’s-80’s find Orthodoxy. It also said in the English in the United States of America. Also you can join in the choir parts. + they give you antidoron or blessed bread as a blessing which would be given by other parishioners and you will receive more at the end with a blessing from the priest.

This is a really interesting video. I was visiting Bulgaria and stepped into Saint Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, and was just completely blown away by how much reverence it demanded. Interesting to hear you talk about how you experienced the ritualistic part of the church you attended. I was thoroughly impressed by the Orthodox approach. Good stuff, hope you keep exploring other churches. Interesting to see more widespread views on various religious offerings, and I appreciate your communication style on the matter. Informative, discussed some of the context behind way may drive your POV/experience, etc. Top quality, thank you.

After watching your Catholic Church video, I'm glad you made it to an Orthodox Church. I think you had some great insights that point to why Orthodoxy is so special. As a recent convert to Orthodoxy, I wasn't surprised by many of your observations. First, the beauty of the church and the liturgy. That's Orthodoxy! This is a place of worship and everything is oriented toward that goal. The chanting, the icons, the incense are all working to make God's place a beautiful place. Orthodox sermon's aren't emphasized as much as in protestant churches. For me, I'm there to worship God. It's ok if I don't hear a great sermon. As for websites, I can only say that Orthodoxy isn't as evangelical as your typical protestant church. Orthodoxy isn't a user friendly church that you can figure out easily. Maybe they should do more but maybe they wouldn't be the ancient church for long. This is a pre-Enlightenment faith. Things we assume a church should do in the modern world don't necessarily make sense to Orthodox. Thanks for your video!

There's the Orthodox Church of America and it's based in Texas. The American Orthodox Church has its roots in Alaska. Services are done in English. Greek, slavonic , Aramaic , etc. are hard to understand. There are hundreds of reasons why Orthodox Christianity hasn't changed much. Also, don't conflate it with ultra strict sects. It's actually a in lot more liberal in many ecclesiastical dogma than Catholicism.

I have to comment on some things (and I have to cheer you on , because you were very observant): for a liturgy to be performed, at least 2 people are required, a priest and at least one person, so usually the bare minimum is a priest, andleast one chanter. There are two stands for chanters, one at the right and one at the left of the iconostasis and when it’s feasible, there are two choir groups that chant but of course anyone in the church can chant the prayers if they want. Literally anyone can go at the psalter to chant, no matter the age or gender. In the Orthodox Church, the emphasis is not at the sermon but at the Eucharist. The focus point and the whole point is the Eucharist, thus the sermon usually is brief.
