The sad true is.....Mike Portnoy, stands to Dream Theater, as John "Bonzo" Bonham stands to Led Zeppelin. No MP.....No DT.

Love his drumming on this album but this is probably the worst sounding drum mix of the 2000's DT era. Crashes, chinas and splashes are too quiet and the snare is a bit too low tuned for Portnoy's standards (or at least of this time, as his snares are more like this nowadays)

This album is quite strange. IN MY OPINION, I think that it has their best song ever made (a perfect song): In the presence of enemies pt 1, but also their worst song ever made; Ministry of lost souls. Forsaken is mostly terrible, Constant motion is awesome, dark eternal knight has one of the best instrumentals ever and is a really cool song, I love the mood that repentance makes and the remixed "this dying soul" riff but it isn't amazing, Prophets of war is okay, not terrible, In the presence of enemies pt 2 is a fantastic song, not as good as the first part but I usually listen to pt 1 and pt 2 together, love the journey it takes me on. While the flow of the album is good, Forsaken and Ministry of lost souls really bring it down for me. The lyrics are a big reason in both of those songs. Portnoy and Mangini have different styles and I love what both of them did/are doing for the band. This is one of the greatest bands to ever exist and I appreciate every single album for the differences they bring to their discography, even their newest album (which I think is fantastic). I consider Train of Thought my favorite even though it might not be their best, When Dream and Day Unite their weakest, Metropolis Pt 2 their most important. I also consider Illumination theory live at the Boston Opera House their best (released) live performance, followed by six degrees from Score, and then Octavarium from score. If someone would like to argue with my choices, please do, I wanna hear different opinions but I really wanna hear the reasoning behind it.
