I do not love America because I came from it. Nor because of the things it has done, nor the material things it has accrued. I do not love this country for the conquering it's done or the blood it has shed. I do not love America for how it was built: stolen, scourged, and enslaved. I love America for it's soul, the collective of all who call it home. I love it for the idea of The New Colossus. I love it not for what it is or has been but for what it could be if we really believed that idea. Maybe there have been moments and glimpses of that lofty idea, maybe its just a nice thought pasted over a lie. Maybe, regardless, it could be. We are far from it, if we were ever close, but the hope that the idea of America we tell ourselves could one day be true remains all we have. I love America, because I see more of us letting hope win over sorrow. I love this country for its people, its forests, its mountains, its earth, stone, and water, and the prayer that we will one day live up to the words on Lady Liberty's plaque.

I’m proud to say, I saw Little Joe y la familia, several times at La Tropicana in San Jose California, and he always put up a great show. Funny story is, last time I saw him there, me and my brother in law got so drunk, that we didn’t make it to the show, so our friends had to put us in the car to sleep it off. lol 😂

Years ago, an exhausting roadtrip drew my eyes from the highway. Eager to return home, but concerned about my ability to remain awake and not re-shape my car around a tree, I turned on the radio. It was his voice and his ability to craft a tale in mere moments and his ability to find something that resonates within us all. American Routes got me back safely and firmly planted me front-row center in a swirling kaleidoscope of history, heroes, and harmony. Nick is worthy of accolades, a lifetime's worth of top-shelf bourbon shots, and a great deal of goodness aimed his way. Love this!

I was out in LA for a while, and shortly after I moved out there, I went to a science fiction convention, and Ray Bradbury was one of the guests. I was delighted to be able to speak with him for a few minutes, and he signed my battered copy of "The Illustrated Man." Years later I gave that book to a girl (and now I wish I hadn't!).
