How about making MD a 6 year degree that you can get admission into right after Grade 12? A med school entrant with his 4.0 CGPA in sociology or music in undergrad will not necessarily make a great doctor. Maybe make summer vacations only 2 months long while in medical school? For those students who prefer 4 month summer vacations, offer the option of taking summer vacations in alternate years. Don't force medical students to drink out of a fire hydrant of information in the first two years of MD as it is counterproductive to learning.

Take a look at the data and categorize the Most Common and Least Common health problems that people have gone to their family doctors for. For Most Common health problems such as fever, common cold, flu, bloodwork etc, have people visit Walk-In clinics and have them send all the data to their family doctor.

Two options are available: 1) The OMA and the Province might develop the on-line encrypted software tools needed by doctors to efficiently operate a private practice or, 2) the OMA and the Province may enable business interests to intervene as a profiteering middle-man in the doctor-patient relationship and their relationship with Ontario's public health agency. The OMA and the Province have very evidently opted for the latter course. Personally, I favour the former option. The profiteering motive will only sacrifice value and quality of service, while extracting profit from the healthcare exchange.

I just received a letter regarding my 2 boys doctor. He is closing up his practice. This is now the second doctor in my family that has decided this (My doctor closed her practice 2 years ago). Overall, I fully appreciate the overwhelming surge of patient needs placed on Family Practitioners, especially the parts where funding is concerned. I'm not sold on the extra work however. This is part of the career and you already worked hard to earn the MD. Did you think, now I sit back and collect? All aspects of business has continuously asked for more and we do so to advance ourselves as good members of the working community. If it's the actual business portion that's the issue...then why are we not pushing for that?? Better "small business" training and/or extra funding maybe to hire a GM for the practice to help get that aspect in good working order to allow the Doctor to focus as all 3 panel meters have stated "time to be with our patients". Frustrations for doctors aside, I as a patient am beyond frustrated at the political correctness of the OMA as we all the doctors closing. The letters state they'll work with other doctors to help some transition to there practices but yet we as patients are left out of the loop and have no avenues to help in anyway to acquire a spot in those practice. We are left with a letter, and a promise. that's all. Now, I have to help my boys sign-up for Health Connect which quite frankly, does absolutely nothing to help. It specifically states...we should continue our search ourselves. The problem is, since the system is so overloaded, the word NO is the only constant. I for one am in need as I age. I was always told "if symptoms occur, consult your family doctor" yet how can that happen when now I am told to visit my local walk-in clinic or now I have to take my minor concern and take up space in an ER which is there for EMERGENCIES. So I must sit and wait. Now my boys will keep me company I guess.

I know someone who is a doctor in the US but is Canadian and wanted to return to Ontario to practice medicine but was told that they'd have to pay $75,000 and retrain. Guess what? They decided to stay in the US. How clueless can Ontario be to do something like that? Do we really think that an American doctor is inferior and needs retraining? Way to maintain a doctor shortage!

The old paradigm of the family doctor office is out dated...The walk in clinic model should be expanded...in addition the admistrative soft ware should be digitized...no paper..online forms / reports have been developed....all foreign doctors should be certified...stop the OMA gate keeping...sorry doctors need business training...unionization and pensions..

Excellent and honest presentations. I hope the OMA will also do a similar show on the pressures on specialist physicians in private practice, some of which are the same (continuous cuts in funding, escalating overhead) and others of which are unique to specialists.

I've always wondered what happened to Dr. Kathee Andrews since closing her practice from Highway 7 and McCowan. I've thought about her so often and last night I saw someone who reminded me of her. I wanted to chase down the person to say hi, but I realized it was not her. Hope all is well with Dr. Andrews and want to thank her for being a supportive Doctor in my early years--for about 12yrs. Since then, I've found another fantastic female doctor and she is superb. Thank God for these women who studied to care for others. God Bless!

This is a great initiative but when my father was at Brampton Civic last summer, they said he could not go to that ward because he did not have any behavioural issues. They kept him in a general ward, with well intentioned but understaffed nursing and PSWs that were not trained in dealing with patients with dementia. He was restrained but yet did not have behavioural issues. I hope you are able to provide the right care to all those that need it.
