I've always wondered why when these irish coastguard helis takeoff they hover low, drop down as if they are about to land then shoot up again.. is it some kind of system in the heli or what causes that?

I think its to do with the pressure and engine power power to see if they can actually take off on throttle. Its not so much noticeable in the smaller choppers

Bounce into ground effect, as they take off they come to a hover height of 10ft, check all systems then bounce into the cushion of air under them it helps.

the landrovers you see here are the same landies used by the RUC back in the 90's and have survived everything from explosives to petrol bombs, bricks, rocks and bullets. you name it these landies have dealt with it

@@kemz6751 not those ones they are the newer 2011 or 2012 pangolin armoured or Penman ALR. Bought to replace the aging Landrover Tangis your thinking about. That sloped roof at the front is what gives them away. They have a slightly different look. They are all Landrover Discovery underneath which makes you think where did they even get those models in 2011.
