Pros: I like the looks of a casement a lot better, especially when they flank a picture window. They can be quieter. It has energy advantages as well but there is no ROI because they cost more. They can let more air in. Easiest for egress during a fire. Cons: He didn't mention the real cons. The screen is inside, which is strange to begin with, and the screen will get destroyed almost immediately by pets. Then there is curtains moving next to the screen etc. If you open the windows, you will need screens and that beautiful view without the screen shown by the seaside is not anything you are going to experience. The only cure for this situation is one with a roll-down screen. Next, you cannot have them open if it is raining because both sides of the window get wet whereas if have a double-hung under an eve or hip roof, you can open the top sash, and the screen is always on the outside. With double-hungs you can commonly clean from the inside. Only a few casement windows can be cleaned that way. It is very susceptible to damage or destruction from a wind gust. Drive down the street: Notice how many casement windows you see. Styles have been single-hung, double-hung, casements were in for a little while, and its back to single-hung and double-hung. I WANT casements because they look nicer and I have 2 picture windows with flanking windows. I might be better off just flanking the picture windows with picture windows as HVAC is how houses handle climate these days. Summary: With the use of AC, casement justify themselves as fire escape windows in bedrooms as can double-hungs. Single-hung windows have a cost and energy advantage, but not good for egress and ventilation. The energy advantage of one over the other from an energy perspective is not worth considering unless you live in a glass house.

I personally wouldn't pay an extra $150 - $200 to get a casement window and then pay extra to mess up the view with a bar through the middle that makes it look like a less expensive single-hung or double-hung window when grids have been going out of style. Maybe to make it blend better with the double-hungs?

This is where I am unsure what to do. In the case of a south facing home that is in the deep south....in the winter the south facing windows allow a lot of light into the home heating the home. But in the summer the sun is so high there is no direct sun coming into the home. I understand that in the winter the low-e window getting direct sun do heat up....more than just IG. But I want all of the sun flooding through the windows into the home heating the home. I took out the FLIR camera and the floor catching full sun through IG was over 100F. It seems that in the above case you don't want low-e windows?

It’s nice that you have something blocking the high sunlight during the summer. I have the same question about the lowE glass that you do but for a different reason. I live in western Washington. I’m wondering what to do with my northern windows. I want them insulated but for most the year I want the indirect light to get through the glass without anything impeding it.

I think they’re crap because you can quietly pop the retainer clips off from the outside and pull the whole piece of glass out, never opening the actual frame and they enter steal a few expensive items and go back out the way they came and put the glass back in and tap the retainers back on and you never knew it happened. That’s why they’re junk

This is nonsense, its all theoretical. I have 20% commercial tint on my home that I installed and its been on for 5 years now. Its high quality film that hasnt faded or had any adverse effects. It does what its supposed to. It significantly reduces heat in the home during the summer, most notably on the second floor. Same thing with auto tint places saying you cant tint the sunroof, and give a similar theoretical explanation as this. Not having tint makes opening the shade of the roof unbearable during summer, which negates the point of the sunroof. They claim it will trap heat and cause the sunroof to burst. I couldnt find a shop to do it so I did it myself, used high quality ceramic tint and its been on there 3 years and no issues. This is in 100+ degree summer weather and high humidity. I think the installers dont want to take responsibility for their work and dont want to hnor warranties so they come up with all these seemingly (but not true) explanations on why its "not a good idea". Bottom line is if you use high quality tint no issues come up. These installers like installing low quality junk and marking it up. I even caught one auto installer using high quality brand tint box and putting cheap tint in the box to fool customers.
