I love Mecum. Great atmosphere, some great cars, definitely some deals, definitely some dawgs, friends are made there. I’ve been to Mecum in KC, Indy, Kissimmee, Orlando, Dallas, Chattanooga. Most of the staff, auctioneers, drivers are friendly and there to have a good time. Go, and have a good time!

What do people do with these cars that they pay a lot for? Do they just keep them in their garage and look at them? The way people drive today, I would be afraid to drive them.
@RoadsideWrecksGarage2 күн бұрын
Yes, a lot of people just put these cars in their personal collections and never drive them. I drive the hell out of mine, in fact, I think I am going to take my '69 Camaro for a cruise this afternoon...

Sweden Here Again. I just found you on youtube. Rock n´Roll, Beer, and American Muscle, in a one stop shop. -You have a new subscriber! Also, I see you like the Trans Am. I have an original T/A 6,6, Y82 Special edition, Starlight Black, Black interior, and W72 option, 1977 "Bandit". In Rust free, fully working condition, with the PHS report. (I´m guessing you know about the W72 option?) I hope you find a T/A for future videos! Thanks! //Peter Sweden

Sweden here! -And let me tell you.. 80-90% of the cars that we import from the U.S are sadly more or less Junk! :( I´ve seen more Bondo, and house-sprayfoam-insulation from your side, than I´d ever thought possible.. ..And then I see videos about "how to rustrepair your car.. - with the Sprayfoam.. -Like it`s an actual fix!? -Hell No! :) I bought a -53 Bel Air Custom Chop Top from the U.S. All tricked out! I mean, it was Wicked Cool! I was gonna have the most Bitchin ride in town! A car-agent, that i hired, told me it was the coolest thing ever, and that the guy was legit. I payed around 30K USD for it, and then things got weird.:( And i mean a mess! 5 mounts later it finally arrived. F...in worst car I ever saw! I was Devastated! Just, Guys, Do better. Or at least be honest. My life savings Gone.. We have a great reputation of restoring old cars, and we have the biggest american car culture in the world. (Outside the U.S) Many cars that have been super-restored here, are sold back to the States. And they are Nice! We take pride in havi´n as little Bondo as possible. But most you guys.. Geez Louise.. :( I´m not no keyboard warrior! I Live for American cars! I got my first Camaro at 15yrs old, and my second Camaro at 17. Over here you don´t find them everywhere. And all american cars cost a lot! I´m 41 now and currently the proud owner of 9 American cars. From a Custom -58 Bel Air 348bb, to a -96 Impala SS. Thank You for this video! Finally an honest take on these auctions! I hope folks read my comment! Thanks again. //Peter Sweden

There are a lot of unscrupulous people peddling junk... I have seen cars going to the ports to get shipped abroad and always wondered, "Did the buyer even look at this pile"?!?! I have uncovered a lot of junk over the years, people re-stamping blocks, turning back odometers, I could go on and on... If people put as much energy into being honest as they do into being lying scumbags, think how great the world could be!!

Mecum and Barrett ruined the hot rod car market as far as I’m concerned. Every piece of junk old car for sale in my area is grossly overpriced. People watch these auctions and think their old car is worth a fortune. My buddy just built a ‘69 Chevelle 396. The most reasonable start he could find was $10K and it had a tree growing up through it and no drivetrain. He put it on a frame he had built with a 396 n TH 400. Replaced quarters doors hood bumpers.

Another born and raised Tennesseean here lol. Great advice and thank you for sharing. I have never understood how anyone bids on a classic car or truck either through eBay, Mecum, Barrett-Jackson or any of the other auction houses without actually seeing the vehicle in person. I know if I did I'd end up with a pig in a poke lol.

Been to multiple Mecum and BJ auctions, cars look a whole lot better on TV than they do in person. Most of the time I don't consider the prices at the auctions a good deal, although every once in a while you do see one go across the block for a pretty good price. There are too many guys at auctions that have way too much money burning a hole in their pocket and are willing to pay ridiculous money for stuff. One year at BJ I saw a real JL8 code 1969 Z28 sell for less money than a clone did, and they were both in really good condition.

Some people have no idea what they are looking at those auctions and I can imagine people on You Tube and their comments, and the funny thing about some on You Tube is that they can't turn a wrench and have never owned any type of a real street rod or muscle car and in miny cases have no idea of what they are talking about. Oh well, when a person produces videos on You Tube, I guess the nuts come out of the closet.

I feel your criticism of rough body work is a good service to help educate those that get sold on shiny paint! So many have paid full restoration money on these “Lipstick Jobs” only to have to spend another 20-50k to fix the car once the shoddy work reveals itself.
@bobrustigian46377 күн бұрын
You can’t fix stupid. That’s not Mecum’s fault.

You're right to point out that not all cars are top quality at Mecum. When a cars' paint shows flaws and blemishes under the auction lights, you know it's not a good car. Yet the commentators act like every car is best examples they've ever seen.

Bought a nice looking, well done restomod thinking it was a good buy. Since the purchase I have redone some suspension and the fuel system. Now I’m in the middle of having the engine rebuilt and stroked. It’s true that you have to be aware you’re bidding on and buying someone’s problem or problems.

Great job on pointing out the fact that a lot of these cars are crap. The sellers either don't care about, or possibly dont realize, the lack of quality in them. As far as the bad bodywork/bondo goes, the uninitiated need to take a GOOD body man with them, to look at these piles and point out the work that has been, or needs to be, done. Like you, I don't need a meter or a magnet to spot bad bodywork, but I've been at it since age 16, in 1977.

I recall years ago tire kicking at a Mecum event. The only car I was half interested in was a Delorean DMC-12 with some minor issues. The driver door was hanging up on the body so I couldn't get in it. But I was still curious what it would fetch. The car stalled on the podium. The driver tried to restart but battery was dead. She tried to exit but the door was jammed so she crawled over the console and out the passenger side head first. That's when the auctioneer reminded everyone the car was no reserve. Hammer fell at $7,000 to a bidder right in front of me. I leaned over and congratulated him on a fine eye. He looked up and asked if I wanted to buy it! The car was mine for $7,500. I enjoyed wrenching on it for a year and sold it for five times the amount privately. It was a classic case of knowing the cars issues, knowing what it should be worth, and a bit of dumb luck haha.

Given that the more collectible muscle cars and exotics from the 1960's were already getting saved and restored 40 years ago, it seems we can thank their insane price increases not so much on increasing rarity but more on as you say "rich guys trading baseball cards".
