I think it would be too large to pass in front of you, if you wanted to put it in the passenger seat. I can walk a bit, and so if I'm alone, I fold it and put it in the car, behind the drivers seat. I totally get it! We actually started the process in 2011, and then for various reasons had to put things on hold. We came back to it 8 years later!! Life with a disability is challenging, and then to add on the complexity of someone else having to basically "approve" us was intimidating. But, don't let it scare you. It can be invasive, but I think those of us with disabilities are accustomed to having people ask stuff (docs, therapy etc) Take it one step at a time. You'll get there! Lots of paperwork. Lots of questions. Feel free to reach out if you need anything. 🙂 For us, having a long term foster placement was helpful...and heartbreaking at the same time. The one thing I find CAS lacking in, is training for parenting kids who have experienced trauma...which is pretty much most kids in care. Thanks so much for commenting!

You probably can't do a wheelie bc your center of gravity is too far back. In the Xeon you can adjust it through moving your wheels a bit more to the front. But be aware, it can get really trippy. The weight distribution should be around 80/20 up to 95/5 (weight on caster wheels to weight on pushing wheels)
@ChasetheJourney3 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I will check that out! I've made a few adjustments since this video was made and it feels a better. I raised my front casters slightly which tilted the chair back. That has made it lighter in the front end. I think I'm a little paranoid of falling backward, so I don't practice wheelies much. 😎
@auntiejuly3 жыл бұрын
@@ChasetheJourney To adjust the tilt you can simply adjust the seat height in the back: if you sit deeper in the chair it is easier to grab the pushrims (like a sport wheelchair), but it is a bit more pressure on knees and hips. With the Xeon you can adjust nearly everything so go crazy :). To practice wheelies I suggest testing them in grass, your wheels sink in the mud and thus it is a lot more stable and easier to find your center of balance.

What a great video. Thank you so much! I started the process of getting a wheelchair for part time use and I'm doing research. My challenge for a decent, visually pleasing manual wheelchair will be for my heavy frame as well as my limited hand use. I didn't want a power chair; I didn't want to scooter because the small SUV will fit in neither of those. I have my eye on the Quickie brand and this model looks like it might be the right one. Hi. I've been learning a lot via your youtube clips. Thank you! Thanks to your videos, I feel better about getting a chair, especially this video. My wife and I watched it together and it totally spoke to her. Thanks to this video, I have received my mandate: "get the Xenon!" (She's already planning vacations) Now the questions, because I'm getting different answers from different "experts" and now I'm even more confused than before (where I was confident in my choices before I met them): 1. When determining the heights (seatfront, seatrear, chairback, legrests) do you need to take into account the cushion (I'm looking at the Jay BasicPro)? One says yes, one says no. 2. I was told that a footplate clearance of 5" is not a problem (this is the one that says the changes must be in accordance with the thickest part of the cushion). It seems high for me. What do you think? Thanks so much for your advice and your videos. They've helped us so much!
@ChasetheJourney3 жыл бұрын
#1. When I was measured, I was measured with a cushion similar in height to what I was buying. #2. Clearance for the footplate. I keep my chair in the car, so can't check it...but if you look in the video, you can sort of get an idea. The front casters are 5 inch, so if you compare the casters to the footplate, it's about 5 inches. The nice thing is that the entire footplate is fully adjustable up or down. Since the video, I actually moved it up about 1 inch. If you find a Quickie dealer/store, they should he able to help with the dimensions.

When going to work, I pop on the electric Triride and woosh. 20km/h for years now, over potholes and curbs and still it doesn't squeak. "How do you teach your non-disabled children to interact with those who do have a disability." Me: Simple. Do what I do: teach your children early that there are many ways that people walk/move, talk, see, hear etc...and it is okay and it's not weird...just different. My children are all Autistic, just like me...so it was very important to me that they understood that what makes them different is just as fine as something that makes someone else different. In our house, we are often confused about the behaviors of NT's (neeurotypicals...non autistic people)...behaviors that include categorizing, labeling, and defining others by, to our view, some very strange criteria...and often ends up being derogatory, unkind, or flat out wrong to the person in question. I can remember one instance with one of my younger sons, where a new student in his school happened to use a wheelchair. The little guy in question was sitting kind of away from the others in his chair and I said to my then five year old son, "Why don't you go say Hi to that little boy over there and ask him his name?" My son looked up at me from the table of sensory toys he was playing with and said, "why?" I told him, "Because I think he looks unhappy sitting there by himself and he might be very nice and you might be friends and play together." My son played with the toys a moment longer and then asked me, "But what if he's a meanie?" I remember laughing a little and telling him, "well if he's mean you don't have to play with him, but why don't you go say Hi and see?" (being autistic, my son had met his share of 'meanies') Long story short the two ended up getting along together like a house on fire...but that wasn't what made my mama-heart so happy...what made me so happy was that not once did my son question the fact that this little boy was in a wheelchair or why (though he did ask the boy some days later why he was in "that chair" and accepted the child's answer very matter of fact like), but instead, was simply worried that a new person he was meeting might not be nice...in essence he saw the little boy as he would anyone else, not so much the chair/disability...as it should be. He was worried about meeting someone new just like we all do at times (I'm an introvert as well Joy). Doing things like this...encouraging your children to be inclusive of others (and not because of, for instance, someone's disability, but rather because they may be sitting alone) is so very important when we are raising our children to be kind, sensitive, loving individuals. Also, if a child sees someone using a wheelchair or crutches, a seeing-eye dog, sign language, etc...and they ask questions,...parents shouldn't shush them or pull them away as I see so many parents do in grocery stores and other public places, seemingly embarrassed by their child's natural curiosity. It takes only a moment to inform or reassure a child so that their comfort level around someone with a disability can grow. Children learn quickly and wouldn't it be great if one of the first things they learned from us as parents is how to really see each other, no matter the small differences?
@ChasetheJourney3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for commenting. And I totally agree. If you teach kids at a young age, things aren't weird for them. It's adults that are often the strangest when they see someone using a wheelchair or other mobility aid. Last week we were going to a restaurant and I heard a little boy says "Daddy...what is that?" In reference to my wheelchair. What a great opportunity not to try to silence the kids question, but just explain what it is.

Such great advice. I fell into using a chair out of necessity at the mall one day. Later on I rented a chair for a month, borrowed a couple to test drive, then finally got my custom chair. The first OT I saw flat out refused to apply for me because she said I wouldn’t be approved. It worked out because I don’t think she had the experience to fill out the paperwork correctly. The next OT was like oh I know exactly what to write to get you approved. We ended up paying about 10% of my $6600 chair. 😬 Unfortunately drs and society are ableist. I had NO idea how helpful/energy saving a wheelchair could be. Literally life changing.

I didn’t know it was going to slope down. That’s great if you’re paralyzed but not helpful for me. I’m a PT user, mostly on flat flooring (malls, grocery store), so it works well enough for now.
