Also idk if you know, but you can get red film to help hide the nest to help not stress out the ants... I can imagine if you didn't have the nests covered while in the fridge, they were exposed to light?

Great video. How do you clean these? What happens to all the dead ants etc?
@IDoScapingКүн бұрын
Thank you for 🙌 The ants keep the nests clean themselves unless I give them an already used one from a different colony. I clean the used nests with hot water and vinegar and don't use chemicals. I then let it dry in the sun for a few days. Their dead and the carcasses the ants take into the outworld, where I just take a vacuum cleaner to suck out the debris.

I hang the roots instead of placing them in the tank for Beta. This way Beta can hide itself and rest up on the surface and only go to the bottom to swim and explore just like in their natural habitat where plants cover the surfaces and only roots or stems are in muddy clay soil .. Beta fish must only have hanging roots - hanging garden set ups and see how happy they are - also temperature on top remains warmer for them; even plants hold heat believe it or not
@IDoScaping9 күн бұрын
I'll definitely give it a try in the next scape. I will be adding lots of plants threwout and floating plants as well. To give the Betta cover,resting and hiding places to feel safe and at home.
@juli8vdberg5629 күн бұрын
@@IDoScaping do so but beware, Betas do live in shallow muddy brackish waters where foliage of certain plants cover the surface and not the roots! That’s the mistake people make thinking they hide in within roots; they are not from Amazon and not from mangroves; they use leaves and not roots! I found this out by watching many documentaries and also asking friends from many regions familiar to their own rivers and forests and animals; give Betas enough ‘surface foliage’ and plenty of space to swim low; where they find larvae and insects growing or hatching on stems with their eggs or under leaves; this is why people and aquariophiles like us must reconsider the aquatique scapes of Betas! Not as decoration inside but upside down 🙂

The video ist great, but I would really like, if you talked a little bit about the tanks and the shop. Not only is it nice to listen about your opinion about the store and the tanks, but it would definitely elevate your video! I mean the only reason I click on videos like that, is that I want to hear the person who’s filming talk because, maybe I can learn something more.
@IDoScaping25 күн бұрын
To be honest, I was planning on talking threw out the tour, yet I was a bit shy... The shop was also pretty busy, and the owners were also walking threw from time to time, which was also a bit intimating😅 Then there was the idea of doing a voice over, though as I was on holiday aswell, time was not really on my side for that. For the next time I do a shop tour, I'll definitely talk and share my thoughts on the scapes for sure. I can only recommend going to GreenAqua’s channel. They Dive deap into each scape and the whole setup of their tanks. Thank you still so much for watching, and ill definitely take your advice for the next one.

I see often the excuse that it is just for short time until they are sold. But honestly, such a amount of betas is not sold in one day and I would not say that this size of a box without any plant and natural peace is respectful for animals, for any species. Unfortunately the law don't understand this point.

Nice little terrarium 👍 I like to soak the wood before putting any moss onto it. It seems to give the moss a better chance of taking & surviving. Nice to see how you clean & store wild moss before use.
@IDoScapingАй бұрын
Thank you, I'll definitely keep it in mind to try and soak the wood in water for the next one and I have found the best success with wild moss to dip clean it first,plus let it be very humid for a few days.
@ravenrisbyАй бұрын
Did u need to clean your sand first or r we ok to pop in as is 😊
@IDoScapingАй бұрын
I didn't clean the sand and just toped it up with water as is, so it is not necessary to rinse it through beforehand. Yet it did cloud up the water a bit when i filled up the tank. To combat the cloudiness, I did add some very fine filter wool into the filter to get the water clear in the end. The cloudiness will not affect fish or plants though.

I was hoping something like this will happen with those jars! How much light does a terrarium like this need?
@IDoScapingАй бұрын
The other two will be done soon as well. They do need a bit of light, yet how much I can't really say. I've seen setups that only received very little light, and they thrive.

It was a sad day, and I thought it was something to share, especially since they just came out of hibernation a few weeks before. Maybe at some pointed ill give a house plant tour🙂
@EmpressOfExile206Ай бұрын
Im sorry! That's an unfortunate loss and I know it's got to be especially frustrating to in this case since camponotus are such big impressive species that every ant keeper would love to raise a large colony of‼️ They are notoriously hard to get started & slow growing colonies compared to many smaller/tropical species! It's commonly said that getting a camponotus colony past its first few years & couple hundred workers is the difficult part before you can actually consider them as successful/ thriving. While I know it must be demoralizing to lose a colony like that right at the point all your work should be starting to pay off; the fact that you got them past the founding tube and successfully grew the colony for a few years means you were doing things right or they wouldn't have gotten to that point 💯 I'm confident that you can chalk this one up to a random act of nature and not to your husbandry! Like you said, sometimes this just happens in the world of ant keeping even to the best of us👍
@IDoScapingАй бұрын
Thank you so much for the support. It was not easy losing this colony, especially like you mentioned that with camponotus species or any large ant species in that sense, it's not easy to get the colony to grow to its full potential or even just past its founding stage. Was really hoping that I could get them back onto their feet this year again,especially after losing so many workers. Though I tried my best and will definitely try to get a new camponotus herculeanus queen this year, even though it was pure luck finding this queen😅.
@EmpressOfExile206Ай бұрын
Idk if this is surprising to you.. but *the same* kind of people who would watch videos on aquarium scaping (nature/animal lovers) are *the same* kind of people who enjoy terrarium & ant formicarium videos‼️ Truthfully the "half-moon aquarium" video recommendation brought me to your channel but the ant keeping is what earned my sub 💯👍 Sidenote: I hope you continue to regularly do ant updates or make a 2nd channel for them because *so many* of the quality ant keeping channels just fall off and quit uploading in the 50-100k sub range for some reason 🤔 AntsCanada is pretty much the only consistent high quality channel and he's strayed away from ants as the focus over the last year lol PS- I *love* that you also use Tarheel Ants formicariums‼️ I know right off the bat you're a man of good taste👍
@IDoScapingАй бұрын
I'm very happy that you stumbled across my videos and that you enjoy my content. I got into ant keeping threw watching a lot of terraristik and nature content myself. So very much know that there are a lot of people out there that enjoy both. There will definitely be more videos of ants on this channel for the future, yet a second channel for now would not be worth starting with just one ant colony😅 Though I do plan to gather more queens this year of different species and especially a new camponotus herculeanus queen. It is unfortunate that many other channels that even I followed for a long period have just stopped uploading after a while, and that AntsCanada is the only real one still producing content, even if, like you said not really the way that it used to be. The nests from Tarheel ants I find so far are the best,they look more natural to me, very well though out designs, especially with the water tanks, nest mates, and the magnetic connections. Have had the best results with these nests so far compared to other types of nests. Though just a pity that shipping to Europe is a bit pricy.

@zoratamas4379Ай бұрын
This was may favourite of your videos so far. I hope to see more of the inner lives of the colonies. Seeing them attacking the crickets was like watching a tiny Serengeti. You mentioned that when they have a lot of space, they will pile up their rubbish, but not when they have a small space. Where does the rubbish go in the small space? Also, do they eat the dead ants?
@IDoScapingАй бұрын
I am very glad that you enjoyed the video, and there will be more updates soon. If they have too much space in the nest,they will use that space to store their rubbish, yet if the space is just right, the ants will take it out into their outworlds rather, where the humidity is lower and where nature would take care of it then.
@anjavanwijk409Ай бұрын
