I'm having a new issue. When I fire up N3FJP's ACLog, my Yaesu FT-710 switches automatically modes from SSB to CW. One specific example was YN9H showed up in the DX Spotter on 7.164 SSB. When I went to contact him, the rig automatically switched to CW. I tried changing to SSB but the rig would immediately switch to CW. Here are 2 more examples: I tried to get 2 more DX contacts - 1) an SSB contact on 18.143 MHz. I clicked the DX Spotter and the rig switched immediately to CW-USB and would not go to SSB and 2) a CW-LSB contact on 7.010 MHz that the rig would only connect to with CW-USB. When I tried to change to CW-LSB, it wouldn't accept the command. I don't understand why. I've checked the Rig Interface settings and tried a couple of variations, but nothing seems to help. When I shut down ACLog, the rig works fine. Can you help? 73, Ken KN2D

My first thought is you are doing a contest and the set up window is set to CW. Other than that it has to be a setting issue. Have you ruled out a bad usb to uart cable? Check radio settings? Come back and let us know what was wrong.

@@HamShackReviews Thanks for your response. There is a coding issue. It's reading there's a mode change needed, but not writing the change to the radio.

So i know what it is, We have the exact same issue but on a 27mhz in the UK. Turns out to be car chargers! they have a 100% cycle rate with no breaks in transmission which is illegal in the UK! EV charges are going to be the downfall of radio imo!
@HamShackReviewsАй бұрын
That makes sense!
@ToumalRakeshАй бұрын
I'm a licensed Ham and EV owner and have never seen that. I am also very surprised you were able to pinpoint the source. What I *do* see is that some EVs are very noisy on 160 and 80m while charging, like the Renault Zoe, because they use a motor winding as inductance and have rather noisy charge circuitry. This does not look like an ev charger to me. Too narrowband for that.

I live about 6 miles from Vince and have seen this interference. Saw similar signal on 80 meters band Nov 15, 2024 1:16 AM EST 3.955MHz. It lasted several hours - about 10KHz wide. Live in semi rural Southern NJ. No charging stations in my area for EVs. likely some homes with 1 car home charger could be nearby. 🤔

I found a website many years ago talking about HF internet data eg:Ship to Shore , there is one thing I can tell you. What I've noticed is these strange noises are very time accurate. Another thing you could look up on the internet is Balloons in the southern hemisphere !! Don't worry these aren't local to you..

Sounds like some kind of industrial machinery like an inductive welder of some kind. Waterfall displays have brought a lot of this type of QRM to our attention we used to ignore, before. It is so wide in its bandwidth, that it does not resemble a data transmission. I see many things on HF. There is one thing I have seen several times that has a high amplitude that goes all the way up the RF spectrum in a very fast series of pulses in about 1 second. It looks like spikes at full deviation on the waterfall display and sounded like a science fiction ray gun. One time I heard a station come on and remark he saw the same thing and he was 1000 miles distant. I figured what I saw was either a space laser or a new secret radar, but who knows?
@HamShackReviewsАй бұрын
I know we will probably never know, but they are using frequencies allocated for amateurs to use.
@aliensporebombАй бұрын

You should look into a yagy so you can triangulate the source.

Wish I could, they do not bother me with wire antennas and ground mounted verticals in the woods behind my house but a tower and beam is out of the question.
@Vietnam_Vet_6713 күн бұрын
@@HamShackReviews Besides if it is DX and not local a beam won't help anyway. And to triangulate a signal takes at least two people.
@jeffmerlin2580Ай бұрын
This looks (and sounds) like local interference. Like really local (neighbors). As this is on the 10m band, HAMs a few miles from you should not pick it up if it is local. You should check if other HAMs see the same. 73 and good luck!

I am in Jersey and a friend in south Carolina was seeing it with a stronger signal than I was, he was on a vertical and I was on a horizontal loop. Strange, and I fear it is our frequencies under attack.

Most of the time, an elevated antenna does not need ground radials. Your antenna brand may have a radial kit that has 3-6 radials that goes at the bottom of the antenna

I'm wondering how long an application is good for. Suppose I find ten 1x2 call signs I like that are expected to be available this year. If I file now, is the application good until I get one of them or until all ten have been given to other people who beat me out in the lottery - whichever comes first? Thanks.
@HamShackReviews3 ай бұрын
You can no apply until a callsign becomes available, then the application is good until that callsign is granted to someone- usually 2-3 weeks. On an application you can add up to 25 available callsigns, though it is hard to find that many in the 1x2 or 2x1 range. 1x3's are much easier. Good luck!
@nateitkin82793 ай бұрын
@@HamShackReviews Got it. Thanks. It seems like a person could spend a fortune trying to get a 1x2 with this crazy system the fcc has implemented. It's rare to see very many come available on any given day. I might have to settle for 1x3. 73.

Yes, the horozontal loop is a great aerial. I had one cut for 30 meters and it was very quiet and worked great. It worked on 20 on up to 10 meters using my atu. Even if the loop is close to the ground it might surprise you. A friend of mine said it was a cloud burner but I worked a lot of nice DX with it. It worked very well receiving the AM bdcst band. I cannot explain how but stations hard to hear like KDKA in Pittsburg and KMOX in St. Louis had nice signals. I live 85 miles from the Canadian border in the NE and the 30 meter horizontal loop outdid itself more than once.

It has not for me, and I do not know anyone that said it happened to them. Split just means you are transmitting one one frequency and hearing on another. You will only be listening to one of them unless you are set up to hear both.

My take away is to use 600 ohm for dipoles, is that correct? Is the main benefit of ladder vs coax the ability to run long distance from antenna to shack? How does your 80 meter loop work? How high in the air is it? Thanks for the video.
@HamShackReviews5 ай бұрын
I stayed with 450 ohm simply because I had it, and I am very satisfied with my loop's performance. All 4 corners are roughly 35' in the air, That is low for 80 meters but it still works surprisingly well, even better on higher bands. The ladder line can handle higher SWR over coax and when put right to the tuner or on a balun close to tuner the loss is minor compared to a run of coax with higher SWR.

I built a 20m full wave delta loop configured as #4. It is "portable" as it is made with two 7.2 meter fiberglass poles, a pvc tee, two 45 degree elbows, and some pvc tubing. It's schedule 40. I have it mounted on 10 foot piece of chain link fence top rail. I have a home made 4:1 at the feed point. It is resonant on 20m, and I can tune it from 40-10. Works best on 20-up. I am very happy with it, it works great on 20m.

You can not share the enhanced port with anything else, ensure nothing connected to it. Make sure all the other settings are correct. Try the other port and come back to 5, worst case you can try deleting the Yaesu ports and reloading them.

I have 10 watt QRP and tuner if needed. Going for CW too. Would you recommend a best Delta Loop for me in Maryland for 13 Colonies Special Event. Thanks N3EIE.

I use number 4 and would recommend it to anyone for DX, since 13 col. is stateside I would suggest number 3 as the easiest to install. Number 1 works nicely also, you will need an antenna analyzer for tuning.
