Interesting and attractive cars. Amazing that the first model (600/33) lasted until virtually the end of Daf car production in '75/'76. The rear styling is particularly good I think, makes it look like a larger and more upmarket car. As for the Volvo 300 Series, it always had a strong following in the UK and remained a popular model right up until the end of production. I never got the chance to buy a new 300 Series as I had only just passed my driving test and started working when they were discontinued. But I did make up for this in January 1995 with my first brand new car . . . a Volvo 440 of course! Very good memories of this car and the most excellent S40 that followed it in March 2003. I am quite a fan of the Dutch car industry!

Good video, always liked Dafs as a kid . . . something about the simple but timeless lines of the 44/46/55/66 which is typical of Michelotti designs. You can see this in cars like the Triumph Dolomite and BMW 2002 also. Dafs were well-built and nicely finished too with interiors that were a cut above the average European small car of the '70s. Having ridden in a couple of 66s I can say they were a nicer place to be than my dad's Kadett and vastly better than the Beetle he had before that. Tried to persuade him to buy a new Volvo 66 estate in '78 before the car was withdrawn from the UK market but he was suspicious of the Variomatic transmission and they were quite expensive for a small and dated design . . . I still have the brochure!

I fondly remember my grandmother's Daf 44, light blue with a darker blue interior, reg no PPO 31E. My father took it for a spin and seemed quite fascinated by the transmission's behaviour; I can hear him now remarking that "the engine just dies on you, but the car keeps going"! However, doing a u-turn at the end of our gravel covered cul-de-sac emphasised the lack of a differential with lots of tyre scuffing. The car seemed to be well made as evidenced by the doors that you could gently close with minimum effort and a pleasant fully trimmed interior with what felt like very thick PVC on the seats and sensible rubber on the floor. The rear seat was great for children because it was perched up high to clear the transmission underneath! The 44 and 55 were styled by Michelotti when he was at the height of his powers, using a design language similar to the Triumphs of that time. The 55 coupe was particularly pretty; so sad it is almost forgotten now - I had! Unfortunately, the drive belts on my grandmother's car seemed to require replacing every 15,000 miles. I would have liked to experience a 55 to see how more "grown-up" it might seem with its Renault water cooled engine, but I don't know if there was ever a problem with the belts coping with the bigger engine..

So if Volvo could put a 1.3 L engine in the car and still retain the easily replaceable rubber belts, could a larger car be built with, for instance, a 2.6 L engine and 2 such belts, or one belt that was twice the size? I would think that would be preferable to the CVTs we have today on larger vehicles with steel belts that destroy the rest of the transmission with metal shards when they fail.
@RalphTSMobiles5 күн бұрын
I actually don’t know exactly! Would be very interesting to see! - Ralph
@michaelbacon5615 күн бұрын
Nice idea but as I recall from my childhood, the belts didn't last too long - about 15,000 miles if you were lucky. I think they were the limiting factor in how big and powerful an engine this transmission could handle, but that was back in the 60s and 70s; material science has progressed exponentially since then so it might be possible to have much stronger and longer lasting belts (incorporating carbon fibre for instance?) that could be easily replaceable, but I suspect their size would still be a problem, and packaging seems to be of overriding importance these days!

Big thanks for your effort of bringing all of these wonderful cars under the attention, but I noticed some inaccuracies, so let me explain: Daf 44 was launched in 1966, not 1974. The 850cc also became increasingly louder throughout the model years. When the Daf 46 came to succeed the 1974, Daf was already taken over by Volvo and they implemented the same DeDion axle as used in the Daf 66 to give it more stability. The former system as used by the A and B-bodies having some sort of limited slip differential effect because both wheels where driven indepedently. The single belt-driven Variomatic of the 46 wasn't really an improvement, just cost-cutting from Volvo to squeeze the most cash out of the older production lines. It was be seen a big hampering, since people could no longer still drive any further when that single belt snapped when compared to a dual belt-driven system where people could still move around on the remaining belt. (I should know, it happened to me, haha) Also, the Volvo 66 wasn't merely a minor update of the Daf 66, because Volvo actually strengthened the body with crash bars (Volvo being Volvo, of course). The transmission selector, aka "Het Pientere Pookje" dissapeared in 1975 in favour of an RND pattern and a PRND pattern in 1976 as opposed to a "push forward to go forward and push back to go backwards with neutral in between" -kind of pattern for all Dafs.
