the interviewer has the energy of a middle aged man with failed dreams, hates where he is and projects that energy on the younger generation.

Freshman year at Temple University. This was my first ever show. I was completely sober. I remember standing in line to get in with Marcus Price and Laolu Olubodun (RIP) who were playing in El Toro at the time. At one point I walked over to the side of the building to watch Cedric skateboard on a quarter pipe that I guess they brought on tour with them. I thought I saw Cedric and Omar notice my afro and say something to eachother about it. We watched Questlove drive into the parking lot and passed the waiting crowd to go straight into the venue. I honestly had no idea what to expect. When we got in, the crowd had completely smooshed up against the stage and we were all packed together like sardines. Throughout the show there would be waves of pressure coming from the back of the crowd moving forward up to the stage and then sometimes bouncing backwards. Sometimes it felt like the only thing that kept me standing was the fact that I was completely stuck between people on each side, front and back of me. There was like no individual movement, you just did what the crowd did. It felt like we all just wanted to be as close to the band as possible and it didn't matter that we were all on top of each other. I remember coming out and just being exhausted and my clothes were soaked all the way through with sweat like I had just come out of a swimming pool. I had a large neatly picked out afro walking into the show that had turned into a soaking wet jheri curl by the end. My hearing was fucked from the intense volume and duration of the show. Everything outside afterwards sounded muted. I lost my dorm room key somewhere on the floor of the venue. I know I'll never experience another show like that. It was amazing.

Your description is spooky similar to mine. Only I was in grade 11 and the show was a few days later in Toronto. Those were certainly “the days”. 🙏🏼

Sounds great, but lacks the energy that I loved Cedric and Omar for, especially on the closer 'Inertiatic ESP'. The drummer nailed those fast rhythms, but also lacked emotion. I need to go back 20 years and watch them perform that song the way it was meant to be. What a drag it is getting old.

I had been in California trimming from September to the middle/end of November. I tried so hard to make being able to stretch my stay a couple weeks longer just so I could make this show but the people I was with were bitching about getting back home. I was so pissed out and now watching this show makes me even more pissed. Even though i saw them today with SoaD and yhe Deftones makes me wish for these days of the band again. I mean they were good today but god damn they were god like back in this era.

Was just thinking about this show and came to have a look (I also have a dvd somewhere, the same source). I remembered that the pedalboard had some issue at the beginning of Roulette Dares and it took them a long time to fix it. Looks like 5 minutes, starting from about 35 mins. When they finally got it working and they kicked into the song, it was one of the most intense concert memories I have. Does not really come across on this video, but it was something.
