I don’t play no man’s sky for the planet variety, I play it to see a ship, new crafting recipe, story section, mechanic, that I haven’t seen before once. To know that you’ve only scratched the surface on something you’ve been having a blast with for a hundred hours is an incredible feeling. Even now, there’s hundreds of upgrades I haven’t seen, ships I haven’t unlocked, and they all have a good story behind them and are just plain good ships.

My theory is, even though the gameplay sytems dont feed into eachother in any meaningful way, it stands out a lot and is therefore a valued experience because its a space game that isnt locked into realism. I personally love the game. It was ankle deep at launch, calling it ankle deep now is a huge overstatement. I guess it depends on when you finally got around to playing it. As someone that was there 7-8 years ago to now there are a multitude of things to go and do and there is a little bit of everything for everyone. The story that is in the game isn't going to win any awards and the mechanics are very simplified (which I love). I can't really get into other space sims just because I don't want to learn every minute detail, and this has simplified it down. You want to be a merchant buying and selling from system to system each system having high markets and low markets it there, you want to be a bounty hunter, or pirate, tera former, explorer, base builder, farmer it's all there but simplified and many other features like recruiting aliens to help with advancing not only the story but even your own technology is also in the game. As you said the game is what you make of it, and this will kill off a fair amount of enjoyment from people that just are handed the reins to a game that has trillions of planets and a ton of different directions to go with and no one path being right or wrong.

I think if you like the game you do and if you dont you dont. There are issues i find with nms but honestly Id still choose it over base minecraft any day. I think the fact that devs have brought the game back from so much to the point where you can call it a good game is crazy. But minecraft is so lazy and lacks innovation the entirety of the game survives off of mods. If you want an experience like minecraft play Minecraft but i dont think any game delivers the exploring space fantasy as much as NMS. Subnautic is a great game aswell. All these games have flaws and all of them are great in their own ways.

@Jamesoh
@Jamesoh Ай бұрын
What is a rage bait? But yeah, Minecraft is an old game from 2009 which is easily moddable so people can still find new ways to play it. The actual game for the time was pretty revolutionary and thankfully Microsoft haven't really ruined everything. I mean it's basically the gaming version of Lego. Nms is 7 years younger than it. It's been polished up and fixed a lot of issues it originally had in 2016 but it essentially has the same core gameplay loop which is pretty boring and unrewarding. It's a game which tries to do a lot, but fails to do any of it well. I just don't feel you get rewarded for your time spent in the game at all. The warp speed for space flight is still just a point and click on a galaxy map. I'm not sure how that's immersive. Games like Minecraft, subnautica, planet crafter actually feel like an exploration but in no man sky if you're just running to a waypoint or going to a galaxy which looks similar to one of the last few

Imagine if instead of making another mostly cosmetic update they overhauled cambat to be more challenging and impactful. And made all the different vehicles ACTUALLY feel different and useful in unique situations. Maybe then the game would actually be worth playing. It's just so painful, the game is THIS CLOSE to being actually great, it has so much obvious work put into it, yet it completely misses the mark on the fundamental gameplay loop.
@Jamesoh
@Jamesoh Ай бұрын
Yes exactly. Imagine if they followed it up with an animals update where different planets have different eco systems and have predictors and prey. Carnivorous plants which are hidden and more like traps. Even tribe planets or advanced planets which see you as a scary alien You could even do a big factions update with large consequences on certain sections of a galaxy. It could even be multiplayer related so they're like real factions But it all mostly revolves around improving the core gameplay loop and combat. They also need to do something about the upgrades. I said something similar about the original cyberpunk, nobody wants an upgrade to be a tiny improvement. It should be a substantial change which is very noticeable. Sometimes less is more. Make them rarer, attach them to some fun activities. When you finally acquire the s upgrade it should be like ascending to godmode and it should equally be hard enough to acquire so the effort is rewarded. Like there's no real challenge and there's no substantial reward you get either. Give me a difficult and hard questline which is challenging and hard to accomplish. Don't just pad it out with distance or item requirements. Then at the end give me something crazy like a planet cracker where I can blow up a few planets for fun. There are trillions of them anyway. Let me build a giant space dungeon which people can raid in multiplayer. I put up a few items which are tempting and if they lose I get all of their raid equipment. Or you could make it a basic little mini game where you get something random. But you need powerful items which are rare. There are tonnes of ways to make a game fun. Some more feasible than others but I just doubt they'll ever do it for this game unfortunately

I tried this game for 5 hours, It's so close to being a good game but it just misses some very easy things it could have done. 1- Storage chest early on, One of the key gameplay loops of survival games is setting up storage containers to stash away your loot. 2- I felt like the distance between underground points of interest was too large, You need to use your spaceship, But to take off you need to spend 25 energy which you need to manually farm off the ground constantly. It doesn't really feel like a good cost to benefit. 3- The base building was ok, It even had Terraforming, the ability to dig into the ground like in Enshrouded. But yeah I dropped this game and discovered Planet Crafter. Planet crafter is the opposite of No mans sky. Instead of a vast open world, you got a tiny section of planet. Instead of it being ankle deep, The devs really put their heart and soul into making every square mile of the planet. If you explore a cave, you will find boxes of loot or maybe even a new resource that you need. Planet crafter has these massive planets that somehow only have 1 biome and 4 resources on them.
@Jamesoh
@Jamesoh Ай бұрын
Yeah planet crafter is a much nicer game. You have an overarching goal and get to see the planet terraform and change into something. It puts more of a focus on the survival aspect with oxygen, food and water. A very big thing is that there's no waypoints until you build a beacon so you can set a home. It not really an adventure if you just tag a place on the map and set a point. It just becomes a run to the waypoint simulator. Exploring offers different resources which helps you build up the planet and open up more parts. the game is a simple idea which was executed well. In contrast no man sky is kind of aimless in its goals and its gameplay feels that way too. They haven't really focused on any part of the game other than, lots and lots of similar planets. I couldn't find anything which stood out and got annoyed by the constant prompts and grinding for resources with little reward. Even the base building doesn't have that much freedom in it. It's actually pretty bad to use since you can't clip through objects in free camera mode and you need to use the clip to objects all of the time since it doesn't know how far away to place the object. It's pretty horrendous to be honest. I tried to make a fancy base with differing levels but because of how strict some of the walkways are, it wouldn't line up or even morph to join correctly. It's all so rigid I completely gave up and made a different base 🥲

Gave it another chance earlier this year. Within the first hour or so, a freighter flew through the planet I was on, stopped in midair and just turned invisible. The smaller ships inside the freighter were still visible, so I flew up there, and it gave me a landing prompt. Once landed, I got out and immediately fell hundreds of feet because the freighter wasn't just invisible, it was gone. Now my ship was stuck hundreds of feet in the air, so I said fuck this and uninstalled the game...

I'm impressed at how much time you've saved yourself with that one simple trick. Finally, someone who isn't completely deluded, I managed to painfully pop the Platinum on the launch PS4 version before ANY updates, it was not enjoyable, but I kept coming back for each update hoping it would be a new game, it wasn't, just everything has been expanded and polished, it's the same old turd underneath though, repetitive, monotonous, boring gameplay.
@Jamesoh
@Jamesoh Ай бұрын
Yeah pretty much. When everybody was raving about the game, I imagined that they had changed a lot. But they didn't really. I was completely surprised at just how boring the core gameplay loop actually is and how long it takes to do everything. "You can do anything" as long as it only involves zapping rocks with a laser. "You can go anywhere" except it looks the same as the place you were just at. Even the survival aspect is just a tedious annoyance you need to fill up every now and again. Hard/survival mode just makes the game even more annoying to play. Even the base building is glorified Bethesda base building. They should give you a better UI to build and more freedom. You can't be that creative at all. Fighting is space fights are also basic and could be made to more exciting. You never really feel rewarded for spending your time in the game. That's what I meant when I said it was shallow. Every time I tried to find something fun to do, I just found how limited that part of the game was. They need to focus on something at least and make it fun and rewarding to do.

I couldn't rightly say it's a very good game. I guess the idea of a good game is kind skewed these days because everything releases broken. But games working should be the baseline of a game and not make it a good game. They've fixed a lot of the issues they originally had but that doesn't make it a good game. What makes a game good is kind of subjective and is different for each person. Generally if the actual gameplay is fun or the game is compelling in some way you can say it's a good game. I did want to like it but I just couldn't find anything. So I can't call it good. Unfortunately I couldn't really get immersed into the world at all. They all feel so lifeless. You get the same loop of ships flying above, animals don't do anything. A lot of worlds look the same. I couldn't get the vibe going at all. I think a lot of open world games run into this issue a bit but no man sky is that big it takes it to another level. It's hard to compete with a hand crafted world which somebody has put time into creating. But if you're vibing keep vibing

@Jamesoh
@Jamesoh Ай бұрын
@apelike well if you played it you might have more of an idea on why I didn't like it 😂 I guess I didn't list it all since it would be too long and preachy Unfortunately you didn't but it's basically a monotonous grind which is essentially you zapping rocks with a laser to get materials in a generated backdrop which looks the same with a slightly different hue. The other parts are just running into an empty crash site or pressing e on a rock or box to get more resources The UI is very clunky, managing and crafting your inventory is unintuitive. They realised it was bad and added the quick craft feature instead of fixing the original UI The prompts are never ending and can't be turned off. It just keeps appearing for no reason. Let me at least stop them somehow. Base building is very basic and limited in terms of what you can build. It's like Bethesda base building but with a free flying camera. You don't feel like you're building anything unique. There are others to list but even this is getting long... Ultimately the game feels like it actively wastes your time and provides little to no rewards for your time spent. The gameplay is padded with boring monotonous tasks which are all far away. The progression is almost non existent and getting upgrades isn't some mind-blowing change it should be. It has all of the bad parts of an open world game and little of the good. Its a game made for people with unlimited time to waste.

The UI is pretty intuitive but needs some mods to help. Enemies are actually dangerous in the game. Redstone is just a crazy thing to add to a game too.
