As said above, Sir Frank Whittle of the UK invented and successfully ran a prototype jet engine in 1937. While the Germans invested in technical engineering so they can wage war, the Americans invested in civil engineering to make life better for the people such as The Hoover Dam, Empire State Building, Golden Gate bridge, etc.. Once WW2 was in full swing, the Americans began investing in war technology and easily caught up and surpassed the Germans.
