I have never been to Patagonia, but my late Mother 9Alwina Mair Jones) did in the celebrations last century. She was the daughter of Rev. Richard John Jones, one of the pioneers. My grandmother (Martha Jones) now long departed used to tell me of the things they used to do and I remember decribing shopping trips which took days if not weeks on horseback. I have some memorobilia of my Mothers trip including a medal which was presented to her. She was greeted she recounted by a vast amount of descendants. Sadly my Welsh is very limited as I was raised in England, but I am Welsh at heart. I shall never go to Argentina now due to ill-health and I shall always regret not going on the trip with her.

It comes down to how you regard yourselves. The majority of Welsh people regard themselves as Welsh first and foremost. And the Welsh refer to themselves as Celts. Recent DNA testing has shown that Wales to be the most Celtic part of Britain I doubt whether there are hardly any French who consider themselves as Celtic and the same applies to the English. The English are made up of Scandanavian, Saxon, Jute, Angle and Celt but they are thoroughly Anglicised. Same applies to the French.

The song the girls are singing is a traditional Gaelic waulking song called "Bheir Mi Sgriob do Tobar Mhoire" I will take the boat (a sgriob is a particular kind of boat) to Tobarmory (On Mull). For those of who can think of nothing better to do than criticise the performance I can tell you that all the girls featured are fluent Gaelic speakers, passionate about their culture & are the future of that Culture! (I know this as I was their tutor!) I can email lyrics for anyone who wants them

S4C have been running a 4 part series on Patagonia , Cof Patagonia ( Remember Patagonia) and the final episode is on at 14:25 tomorrow. I have looked on S4C Clic to see if you can watch the previous episodes but they are not listed strangley enough?? You can however watch a recent film called Patagonia starring Matthew Rhys & Duffy

@HarryGodwinsson So was it due to the convenience of English that Welsh declined? Perhaps. But that convenience was constructed by the English, and later British states, which legislated against Welsh and undoubtedly wanted it gone.

@HarryGodwinsson ...and that was largely brought about by massive levels of immigration into Wales as the valleys of the South industrialized. But again, it was due to the inferior legal status of Welsh that English eventually prevailed. As all the functions of state were conducted in English, the immigrants had little reason to learn Welsh, and so bilingualism became commonplace amongst the Welsh. This was compounded by discrimination against Welsh in schools - look up the "Welsh Not".

@HarryGodwinsson The reasons behind the decline of Welsh were manifold. The guy you replied to rightly brought up Henry VIII's Laws in Wales Acts as the beginning of the process, as they outlawed the use of Welsh in any official capacity. There can be no dispute, therefore, over the fact that English was forced on Wales when it came to all the important functions of state. The decline in Welsh as a community language, however, did not come until much later.

This is the official old anthem of Kernow (Cornwall) too, they sing it as Bro Goth Agan Tasow, although Trelawney (song of the western men) is a more well known national song of Cornwall, kind of like rule britannia is to britain. You forgot to add the Celtic nations where the Celts come from... Asturias, Galicia, Cantabria and Navarre (northern Spain). Though they don't have the same anthem, its where the Celts come from.

I was in the Chubet Valley when I visited Argentina a few years ago. Talk about a barren place. Awful agricultural land with poor irrigation and the shock the settlers must have got when they arrived must have been heartbreaking to say the least.

Yes I agree, but we can do something before then. If the referendum on full law making powers is successful then the Senedd can make laws to make this possible and enforce same. A law can be passed whereby this country is to be known as Cymru and the use of Wales illegal, and similarly with towns and cities. It has happened elsewhere such as Peking is now Beijing, Bombay is now Mumbai, Ceylon is now Sri Lanka etc

Yes, and Wales and Welsh is derived from the Saxon word Wealas which means foreigner. It is a shame that we have allowed the words Wales and Welsh to become the terms that describe us. It was the Saxons that were the foreigners of course. It would be nice if we could do away with those terms and use Cymru, Cymraeg, Cymro , Cymraes etc to describe ourselves.
