hello, i am quite young however i am interested in this degree as we are learning about careers in school and i was wondering how much computing ‘stuff’ is in the course bc if i look online theres programming.. do u need to know how to code?
@kerimtaskn62974 ай бұрын
Knowing how to code would surely be a massive advantage but you do learn it from ground up technically. A lot of the modules require a lot of time to do well so knowing how to code before hand can free up time to give more time to other modules or do the set out tasks better and quicker.

I'm not sure I should pick this course or mechanical engineering. Worried the course is a bit too practical and there isn't much maths but at the same time it seems like the most rounded course at imperial. Do you know anyone that has done the other engineering degrees. It would be really good if you could make a video on the differences in your degrees.
@kerimtaskn62974 жыл бұрын
That’s a good idea. I may make a video with me and another friend explaining the differences... no promises though. I don’t have that many friends that I can ask
@kerimtaskn62974 жыл бұрын
But I can assure you its not “too practical”. There’s a lot of theory. The practical sides are mainly there to reinforce the theory. It’s a powerful learning style that I think is much more effective and useful than purely theoretical courses

“Candidates are encouraged to present examples of their work during the interview” can you give examples of what we can present? And how important is it to actually HAVE something to present
@kerimtaskn62974 жыл бұрын
I personally wasn’t asked in the interview to present anything which I was actually a bit upset about. If you are asked to bring something I would recommend you to still bring something, it’s important to follow instructions. As to what you can bring, I would recommend projects you have built if you have any (or pictures and drawings etc.) If you can’t bring these then any product design related drawings may be beneficial. Anything that shows your ability and interest in design and engineering.

hi, just wondering what kinda options do you have after uni, what career options and how much the salary is?
@kerimtaskn62974 жыл бұрын
Hello Anika, Job prospects from the course seems to be very promising but I can’t yet speak from experience. People have found jobs and internships in many different areas. I know someone who found an internship at Apple as a mechanical engineer (I think it was mechanical). I also know someone who worked with N26 (finance sector). We learn about larger systems, human centred design and a range of engineering principles in order to be successful in the execution of our designs, we also learn strong communication skills. So you can imagine the vast array of jobs one can apply for, like electrical engineer, computer engineer, product designer, system designer, graphic designer, advertiser, project manager. Ideally I would be looking for an executive, project manager job if I was seeking to be employed. In order to utilise all my skills I have learnt to the max. I heard that graduate salaries as a design engineer is around £30000 a year. Internships would obviously be much lower at around £18000 a year.

Hello, I am considering applying to Imperial for Design Engineering. What type of assessments did you have and how hard did you find them? Also, do you think chemistry contributes towards the course? because i am currently studying A level Maths, Furthermaths, Chemistry and 3d design, but i am still deciding on what subject to drop (chemistry or further maths). Lastly, how was your social life while studying? Thanks!
@kerimtaskn62974 жыл бұрын
I think further maths will help you much more than chemistry for this course specifically. I had a pretty chill interview with Nicholas, one of the computing lecturers and of course we had to write a personal statement which I’m assuming is read carefully by the team. Other than that for our cohort, there was no other assessments. Social life, is very hard to have but if you time your self well and get things in order (which for this course will be challenging again) then it’s more than possible. I found that the main obstacle to having a social life isn’t so much to do with less time but rather high stress due to many deadlines. Again, due to the nature of the projects, you’re never really fully “done” with assignments and there’s always more to do. This makes it hard to allow students to know when to quit the work and chill.

@@kerimtaskn6297 ah thank you! Ive already dropped chemistry leaving with an AS grade A. May i ask how the interview went through the application process?
@kerimtaskn62974 жыл бұрын
@@jt4225 it was very chill. I was asked a few questions (as it happens in interviews) but I felt like the main thing I was tested on was my character, the way I respond to correction and not getting things ‘right’. My advice would be, be you, be friendly, show your interest, ask questions you may have, most importantly be teachable. If they correct you, you’re gonna show them MAX interest in what they’re about to teach! Cause you really are interested. :) don’t fake things, they’re smart and they’ll know. I was asked the following, What components do you think a hair drier is made from If you were to add all your hairs together to make one long line, how long would it be? Draw this spoon (30seconds) Why imperial college? I got one of the questions completely wrong (the hair one due to a small error) but I talked through my entire thinking process. hello Kerim! is there any tips for writing a personal statement for design engineering in imperial or other universities?
@kerimtaskn62975 жыл бұрын
Yukyu Chan not sure what they are exactly looking for with the personal statements but personally, I talked about some of my previous projects I did in my own time. I also talked about my exchange year and what that added to me. I also talked about participating in the maths Olympiad... those are the things I can recall but I would do more research to find what they are looking for. I think imperial has their very own video on this topic.

How much maths and physics do you do in design engineering is it far behind mechanical engineering in terms of content.
@kerimtaskn62975 жыл бұрын
I found the content to be pretty dense with all technical modules we have had so far and this was quite challenging especially in the second term. I can’t compare it to mechanical engineering as I don’t know what they learn. But to put it in context, we have people who have studied high level maths that would still find maths challenging (mainly for the second term). The way it is, is they give a very broad range of skills and information with a fair amount of depth but you’re not really expected to understand everything to too much depth and detail.
@aodoemela5 жыл бұрын
@@kerimtaskn6297 Would you say your are limited to design roles from picking this course? Do you learn enough technical things to be able to go into electrical or mechanical engineering?
@kerimtaskn62974 жыл бұрын
@@aodoemela very good question, but I don’t think I can give you a reliable answer as I haven’t been in any employment yet other than my design business. I think you would be “qualified” enough to go into almost any field of engineering but of course to get past the interview stage and get the job, you would need to give some extra time for the desired module. It will be very challenging for most people to learn every module to such a high standard that’s on offer. They want students to become “T” shaped engineers meaning they want you to have some level of understanding of many fields of engineering but then a very deep understanding of a desired and focused area.

Hi there, I see you are studying design engineering at imperial and I am going there this year, but I was wondering if you think it is useful I get a laptop or a PC, if so, do you suggest any and must they be pretty powerful? also do you use laptops in lectures a lot etc?
@kerimtaskn62975 жыл бұрын
Madelaine Wood laptop! But much better, the new 2018 iPad Pro (256gb). What ever you get, make sure it’s light weight, long battery life and powerful enough. Laptops are meant to be around 256 gb min (ssd is highly recommended) The IPad Pro is super good! I spend around %95 of my ‘technology time’ on my iPad. A laptop is still essential for things like solid works and coding but when it comes to note taking, sketching, some 3D modelling then the IPad is really convenient!

Also, which other universities did you apply to for Design Engineering?
Hi Kerim, thanks so much for doing these videos on Imperial as I’d really like to apply for this course. What A-Levels did you take? Also, how do you find the workload at Imperial, roughly how many hours a week are you doing course work? Thank you
@kerimtaskn62975 жыл бұрын
Lily Owuye hello! Thank you for your question. I applied to Bath, Bristol, loughborough and York other than imperial. The workload will really vary for each person. Really depends on how enthusiastic you are and how much of the modules you really want to learn. I found you can surface learn a lot of things and still pass exams. This obviously would take a fraction of the time you would need to learn everything in depth! So I don’t think I will be able to give you a definite amount of hours. However, imperial gives us a guideline to how many hours they are expecting us to give each course from our own time. You may find these online, I can also share if I come across them.
@kerimtaskn62975 жыл бұрын
Lily Owuye also, I took... maths, physics and 3D design A-Levels. In general, I think the workload is bearable. Like I said, it’s all up to you how much effort you want to put in each task and module.
@lilyowuye30055 жыл бұрын
kerim taşkın Thanks so much for your reply. The final thing I wanted to ask was do you think that applicants without Physics A-Level would struggle with the content? I study Mathematics, Chemistry and Product Design but I’m aware that the only entry requirement is Maths, but many applicants will have Physics I assume? Lily ☺️
@kerimtaskn62975 жыл бұрын
Lily Owuye hello once again! Personally I don’t think it would make any significant difference to your studies (not having studied physics) The only place where I found physics helpful was in our mechanics module where we calculated moments in beams etc. They choose a variety of students to have diversity in the class. Don’t at all worry about which a levels you have! It’s chill!

@@kerimtaskn6297 hello, thank you for your reply. Do you think the course is much harder than equivalent ones at less prestigious universities? And do you think it's more important to be clever or to work hard to be successful doing the course? Thanks
@kerimtaskn62975 жыл бұрын
Harry DE , personally, if you get the offer and you meet the criteria, believe it or not you are clever enough for the course! They choose students pretty well. For me, I found that it wasn’t necessarily about how hard I worked, or how clever I was that go me through till now. It was more to do with mindset, organising things, motivating yourself... these are the challenges and things you will need to learn during the first year. One thing they will not do is spoon feeding! You are left to yourself with sometimes quite ambiguous tasks. They train you to learn on your own, navigate yourself through the unknown. This is how a design engineer is meant to be able to think and they train you well in this! Is it hard work? Well yeah... it’s Imperial. It will be challenging. It’s designed to challenge some of the countries hardest working, smartest people. When it comes to other courses, I can’t say. I do get the feeling that Imperial is very fast pasted. You will learn A LOT in small amounts of time and on top have projects to do. I feel that this may be something quite unique to Imperial in general. One of my recommendations is, for the first year, don’t stress, enjoy the learning, don’t worry about the grades you get at all. It counts to only %11.
